What Government is Doing While Everyone Panics-...
The Government Wants To Dramatically Weaken Your Encryption. Here Is Why It Should Not. Late last week, reports emerged that, once again, senior United States government officials are contemplating seeking legislation that would ban ordinary citizens from using encryption that the government cannot easily crack, reviving the battle between the government – which believes that encryption hampers its efforts to monitor the communications of terrorists and criminals – and technology firms that wish to offer the best security to their users. The new proposal would impact every user of Whatsapp and other tools that offer end-to-end encryption – that is, that allow users to carry on conversations that are encrypted in such a fashion that the chat-service provider itself cannot decrypt them. 1. There is no evidence that allowing law-abiding private citizens to use encryption actually helps terrorists achieve their aims. (If there is such evidence, let the government present it to the public.) At least as far as the public has been told, we have not experienced terrorist attacks that would have been preventable had the government been able to more easily break the encryption of standard messaging tools. In fact, it seems that many communications between terrorists are carried out without any encryption. As was seen clearly after the Paris attacks in 2015, governmental failure to monitor terrorist communications is arising primarily from other deficiencies – such as not quickly enough identifying the right people to monitor – rather than from the inability of law enforcement and intelligence agencies to decrypt encrypted communications. 2. There are more effective actions to take against terrorists that should come first. Before we ask Americans to surrender privacy in order to gain security, the government should demonstrate that in has acted with competence in all other areas of the war against terror and exhausted other means. As I noted in 2015, when we hear our Commander-in-Chief telling us how ISIS is “contained” days before the organization kills over a hundred people in the heart of Paris, when we barely hear anything from the government when an American student is murdered by a terrorist in the West Bank, when we hear that the Turkish government tried to warn France twice about one of the suspects involved in the Paris killings but that the French did not respond until after the attacks, etc. we have to wonder if there are other much more significant actions that the government could (and should) be taking to combat terrorists before it deems it necessary to strip us of our rights. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/goodmorningliberty/support

Let's Talk About Price Gouging || EP 208

Coronavirus: Tennessee brothers hoard nearly 18,000 bottles of hand sanitizer, say they have nowhere to sell it

Two brothers from Tennessee who said they tried to capitalize on the coronavirus outbreak by buying nearly 18,000 bottles of hand sanitizer now claim they have nowhere to sell the products after a crackdown on online price gouging.

After the first COVID19-related death in the U.S. was announced, 36-year-old Noah Colvin and his brother, Matt, cleared out hand sanitizer from stores around Chattanooga, Tenn., and parts of Kentucky, The New York Times first reported. Their intention was to sell the goods on Amazon at marked-up prices.

They sold the sanitizer for between $8 and $70 each, multiple times higher than what they paid for the product at local stores, the paper reported.

The brothers declined to disclose their exact profits, saying only that it was "substantial."

Despite backlash and accusations of profiteering, Noah Colvin defended his methods to The Times, saying there was "crushing overwhelming demand" in areas not carrying the products.

"I honestly feel like it's a public service," he said. "I'm being paid for my public service."

But, Amazon, along with other online platforms including eBay and Walmart, shut down sellers such as the Colvin brothers who were found to be price gouging.

"Price gouging is a clear violation of our policies, unethical, and in some areas, illegal," Amazon announced in a statement. "In addition to terminating these third-party accounts, we welcome the opportunity to work directly with states attorneys general to prosecute bad actors."

Now, some 17,700 bottles of hand sanitizer have been sitting in Noah Colvin’s garage, with no place to sell them, the paper reported.

After the brothers made headlines, news outlets reported that investigators with the Tennessee attorney general’s office ordered the Colvins to end any profiteering strategies. The state, which has had laws against price gouging, was investigating the case.
--- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/goodmorningliberty/support

Complete Coronavirus Update - Is This Trump's F...

Coronavirus cases over 111,000: Live updates on COVID-19

A newly identified coronavirus SARS-CoV-2 is spreading across the globe. Here's what you need to know about the virus and the disease it causes, called COVID-19.

Update on Monday, March 9 (ET):

—There are about 564 confirmed coronavirus cases in the U.S., with 136 of those in Washington state and 124 in California.

—There are now 22 coronavirus deaths in the U.S. (19 in Washington and 2 in Florida).

—There are 3,892 deaths linked to the virus worldwide. Deaths worldwide exceed those from SARS. And 62,375 individuals have recovered from COVID-19.

—There are 111,354 confirmed coronavirus cases worldwide, with more cases popping up outside China than inside.

—Additional cases have been confirmed in New York, bringing the state's total to 106.

How does the new coronavirus compare with the flu?

The new coronavirus outbreak has made headlines in recent weeks, but there's another viral epidemic hitting countries around the world: flu season. But how do these viruses compare, and which one is really more worrisome?

So far, the new coronavirus has led to more than 100,000 illnesses and more than 3,000 deaths worldwide. But that's nothing compared with the flu, also called influenza. In the U.S. alone, the flu has caused an estimated 34 million illnesses, 350,000 hospitalizations and 20,000 deaths this season, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

That said, scientists have studied seasonal flu for decades. So, despite the danger of it, we know a lot about flu viruses and what to expect each season. In contrast, very little is known about the new coronavirus and the disease it causes, dubbed COVID-19, because it's so new. This means COVID-19 is something of a wild card in terms of how far it will spread and how many deaths it will cause.

"Despite the morbidity and mortality with influenza, there's a certainty … of seasonal flu," Dr. Anthony Fauci, director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, said in a White House press conference on Jan. 31. "I can tell you all, guaranteed, that as we get into March and April, the flu cases are going to go down. You could predict pretty accurately what the range of the mortality is and the hospitalizations [will be]," Fauci said. "The issue now with [COVID-19] is that there's a lot of unknowns."
--- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/goodmorningliberty/support
