Limitless Learning

In this #jammingwithjason #internalauditpodcast episode I dig into improving your learning so you can unlock your limitless potential. It's a bit of a potpourri episode, one where we literally talk about potpourri, but a few other topics besides learning :)

You don't just need training, you need to LEARN ... and they are two different things. You can take a training and not learn anything, and you can learn without going to training. To learn you need a combination of knowledge, skills, abilities, and experience. Training only helps you with the first two.

One of the best ways to improve your abilities and get experience is through community with others. Without this aspect of learning you really don't integrate and "learn" the information fully.

Come join me in some communities where I hang out so we can interact directly. Podcasts, while they are fabulous are a one-way communication. When we connect in community the conversation can go both ways.

For a community of like minded internal auditors on a full learning platform check out the cRisk Academy Facebook Group: https://www.facebook.com/groups/criskacademy/

For a community of like minded Chief Audit Executives, check out the CAE Forum: https://jasonmefford.mykajabi.com/caeforum

For a community of like minded CIA candidates, check out the CIA Discussion Group: https://www.linkedin.com/groups/13732881/

Here's the book I reference in this episode, that is a must-read for anyone who is serious about life-long learning.

"Limitless: Upgrade Your Brain, Learn Anything Faster, and Unlock Your Exceptional Life" by Jim Kwik: https://www.amazon.com/Limitless-Upgrade-Anything-Faster-Exceptional-ebook/dp/B082ZQDH63/

Welcome to the Jungle of Online Training

Seems like everyone and their dog is now offering online training saying the equivalent of "We got everything you want honey, We are the people that can find whatever you may need. If you got the money, honey we got your disease."

I've been in the online space now for about 10 years, and I know all the different words people use may be a little confusing to know exactly what you are getting.

In this #jammingwithjason #internalauditpodcast I do a little public service announcement (PSA) to help you hack your way through the jungle by explaining what certain words mean in the online space, what you can expect by the words used, and three questions to ask yourself before you register or purchase online webinars or course ... so you know what you are getting and don't get surprised.

Online vs. virtual. Learning vs. training. Webinar vs. course. On-demand, forum, summit, in-person ... and the list goes on ... I discuss each, so you are better prepared to find exactly what you need in the online space.

If you are interested in a learning platform that was around long before the pandemic, and will be around long after, check out cRisk Academy: the largest on-demand, webinar, and certification learning platform for internal auditors.

Join thousands of professionals getting technical, soft-skills, certifications, and community though cRisk Academy. A Touch of Grey

If you've ever wondered what psychology, science, mindfulness, and music have to do with internal audit, this #jammingwithjason episode will explain. When you listen, you will see I'm not as crazy as I may first appear :)

Traditional internal audit is no longer serving our organizations, and it's time to start a revolution and shake it up baby, twist and shout our way to being elevated so we can fly like the eagles in our organizations and be seen as trusted advisors adding real value. It's time to live from a place of possibilities and opportunity instead of being stuck in fear, negativity, and communication breakdowns.

Even when it's worse than it appears, it's alright. We will get by, we will survive ... together.

Listen in at: http://www.jasonmefford.com/jammingwithjason/ or where ever you enjoy listening to podcasts.

If you listen to the podcast, please do me a favor. 1. Creating Opportunity Out of Uncertainty

Every event or circumstance we find ourselves in is neutral. There is no good or bad in circumstance, it's how we choose to respond or interpret the situation. We can view our circumstances as a threat or an opportunity ... the choice is up to you. Since auditors are trained to look for the negative, there is a very real problem when we let a negative view creep over into our personal lives.

In this #jammingwithjason #internalauditpodcast I share how you can choose to see the opportunity and questions you can ask yourself to find the opportunity and stay positive regardless of your circumstances. Every silver lining's got a touch of grey, but we will get by, we will survive. It's even worse than it appears, but it's alright, we will get by, we will survive.

Here's one of the opportunities from our uncertain times. In March 2020, cRisk Academy gave away over $75,000 in free and discounted courses to help out the internal audit community. In April 2020, they are offering a 50% discount on all their courses.

For you and your team to take advantage of this special opportunity all you need to do is:

1. E67 Best of: Leadership in Times of Chaos

In times of chaos and crisis, people look for the leaders. At these times, even when as a leader you may want to retreat to your cave ... it's more important to show up as a leader. Retreating to your cave may just be one of the worst things you could do.

In this #jammingwithjason #internalauditepisode I discuss the qualities of leaders in times of chaos, what you should be doing as a leader, and how to take care of yourself while you care for others.

You want to listen to this whole episode, since it takes a very interesting turn at the end, you won't be expecting.

Beware of fake leaders. Many people who think they are leaders are actually followers, just copying what others are doing. If you are like most people, I'm sure you'd prefer the real deal, instead of a cheap copy. Beware of people pretending to be leaders who are really followers. Fake leaders tend to show up in numbers during times of chaos and often dupe people. E66 Best of: Networking is for Sales People

#Internalaudit professionals don't need to networking, they need community.

In this #jammingwithjason #internalauditpodcast episode I explain the differences between networking and joining a community, and believe me there is a big difference. Even when people think they have community it is often just networking, which is a big waste of time.

Networking is for sales people to collect sales leads. Unless you are trying to sell people products or services, it's time to stop networking and join a community.

I also discuss the elephant in the room with the world-wide corona virus pandemic and some ways you can minimize the impact on your career.

Join the thousands of people training each month with cRisk Academy at: https://ondemand.criskacademy.com/?affcode=105582_jpp6czlf

If you are a #ChiefAuditExecutive ready to join a community of top CAEs from all over the world, schedule your complimentary no-obligation 30-minute call with Jason Mefford to see if it's right for you at: https://jasonmefford.mykajabi.com/caeforum

Have conferences, trainings and meeting been canceled you planned to attending this year?
In this week's episode I speak with Steve Goepfert about lessons he learned from being a CAE. We discuss various topics including the difference between being a Chief Auditor, and being a Chief Audit Executive; what it really takes to be a CAE; how to provide those moments of head snap (you'll have to listen to learn more); how to prove and communicate the value internal audit provides; and not getting so engrained in the mechanics that we don't focus on the big picture.

Steve Goepfert was the Vice President - Internal Audit (Chief Auditor) for United Airlines in Chicago, Illinois. He assumed the role after the merger of United and Continental. He had previously been Chief Auditor at Continental Airlines for 21 years.

He was the 2006-2007 Chairman of the Board for the Institute of Internal Auditors, Inc. (IIA).
In this week's episode I speak with Larry Harrington about lessons he learned from being a CAE. So much in this episode.

In fact, there is so much in this episode you will probably want to listen more than once.

Larry Harrington served as the global chairman of The IIA, and retired as the Chief Audit Executive (CAE) for Raytheon Company, which specializes in defense, civil government, and cybersecurity markets throughout the world. Prior to joining Raytheon in 2004, he led the internal audit function for several Fortune 100 companies, where he also served in other areas, including finance, human resources, and operations.

In "retirement" Larry speaks, coaches, mentors and consults with internal auditors all over the world, and continues to be a strong and passionate voice for the internal audit profession. E60 Best of: Auditing Humor and Other Oxymorons...

As auditors we tend to be a very serious group of people. In our attempt to appear competent and professional we often switch over into the boring, robot-like realm ... a place that gives rise to much of the auditor stereotypes.

In this episode we discuss how humor and creativity can actually make us better auditors and more effective in our job, plus we have a lot more fun doing the work. I'm joined by Mike Jacka, a truly hilarious auditor who has been waving this flag for decades. E59 Best of: Why Don't Auditors Find More Fraud...

The ACFE reports that about 40% of frauds are uncovered from tips to a whistleblower hotline, while internal audit only uncovers about 15% of frauds. While detecting fraud is not internal audit's primary purpose, one is still left to wonder why internal audit doesn't find more fraud, especially since one of the first questions from management is "why didn't audit find this?"

Jason Mefford is joined by Aaron Denbo to discuss how internal audit can change a few simple things to help increase their ability to find and detect fraud. E58 Best of: Moving Internal Audit to the Strat...

In order to really add value to your organization, internal audit has to move to the strategic level. Too often we spend our time in the details and weeds and then wonder why executives are not interested in what we have to say. If you are being ignored, you are probably not talking and acting at the strategic level. Unless we focus on what is relevant to executives and the board, we risk being viewed as as not adding value and even worse irrelevant.

Jason Mefford is joined by Norman Marks, a retired Chief Audit Executive, Chief Risk Officer and thought leader to discuss what internal audit needs to do to move up to the strategic level and get a seat at the big kids' table.

E57 Best of: Internal Audit Must Embrace Change...

I spent the last several months interviewing many chief audit executives (CAEs) from all over the world to gain a better understanding of the current state of internal audit. What I found is that not only is the pace of change accelerating at an alarming rate, but along with the mounting challenges come plenty of opportunities too. From these interviews, and my own experiences as a CAE at two organizations, I have identified some clear trends, challenges, and opportunities that most CAEs are working to address.

#internalaudit #cae #chiefauditexecutive
