Flashback Friday: Playing the Game without Help...

In this week's #jammingwithjason I'm going to let you in on a little secret. Many of you are playing the game of your career without much help. The problem is, others in your organization are getting help, which means you are playing at a big disadvantage.

I'm not talking about a lack of resources or struggling to get budget and support. It's about getting yourself the training, coaching, and support you need to play varsity-level sport... like your peers. It's about having the right balance (e.g. American football: offense, defense, passing, running) to get you performing at an elite status.

Take a listen and see some of the areas where getting a little extra help, will go along way in helping you play the game of your career and life as a champion.

If you are a CAE and really serious about elevating the status of internal audit in your organization, improving your executive presence, and getting best practices and thought leadership from like-minded CAEs, the CAE Forum is for you.

Flashback Friday: Invest in Yourself or Nobody ...

As we move forward in our career it's easy to wake up one day and realize we haven't really invested in ourselves in years. I know, cause I've been there too. We get so busy dealing with the day-to-day stresses on our job, trying to balance life-work commitments that we don't take time to invest in ourselves. We become dependent on our employer to provide or pay for training, and when that doesn't happen we usually stop taking the time for personal development. After all, we have so much else on our plate, and we don't believe we "have" the time or money.

In this episode, I discuss two "gods" of the strings that we can learn a lot about how to become an expert in our craft. It takes, blood, sweat and tears ... of daily / weekly / monthly consistent dedication ... and a mindset to "make" the time or money investment in ourselves. A Facelift for Compliance with Tom Fox

In case you missed it, there has been a lot of change in how organizations are dealing with #compliance. Risk management concepts, use of data, using compliance to lead to greater business efficiency, third-party risk, just to name a few.

It's as if compliance has gotten a face lift recently and looks a whole lot more like a risk function adding value instead of just a cost of doing business.

I'm joined by Tom Fox to discuss some of the recent changes and how he has incorporated the "nuts and bolts" needed to operationalize compliance in your organization in his updated "The Compliance Handbook, 2nd Edition" where he shares practical tips like 31 days to a more effective compliance function.

As usual, we don't just jam about compliance and #risk, but also music and some career advice you won't want to miss.

Save 20% on Tom's new book when you use this link: https://lexisnexis.com/fox20

Listen in at: http://www.jasonmefford.com/jammingwithjason/

Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and ESG with Julie...

With business entering the digital world, we need to start looking into alternate populations to begin hiring from. Sure there are people of different skin colors or sexes, but what about individuals with physical disabilites or people from the autistic population. Sometimes to tackle certain situations, a different point of view can be highly beneficial. Not only can business reach out and bring in employees from different walks of life, but companies can also look into how to treat their employees equitably. For some employees a flexible schedule would be helpful, or perhaps a cafeteria type benefits plan may work better for your employee base.

Julie Thompson joins us today on the Jamming with Jason podcast to discuss positive ways that industry can change in many ways for the better!

Listen in at: http://www.jasonmefford.com/jammingwithjason/

For the times, they are a changing in the internal audit profession.

You can choose to stick your head in the ground and ignore what's going on, but you may end up like some CAEs who just got let go from their positions for sticking with a traditional internal audit mindset.

In this week's podcast I share why Traditional Internal Audit is dying. We've been seeing this for years, but I share with you some recent events and evidence that prove again that this is the trend we are seeing.

If you are still spending most of our time auditing lower level process controls and focusing on historical events and internal controls, you are probably stuck in the traditional rut and need to start working your way out by transitioning to a true risk-based internal audit methodology.

Value-based auditing, objective-based auditing vs. risk-based internal auditing I also discuss in this episode.

Listen in at: http://www.jasonmefford.com/jammingwithjason/

#jammingwithjason #internalauditpodcast #internalaudit

Learn how these two individuals put in the time to become icons of their instruments.

If you want to be at the top of your game, you have to make time and invest in yourself. If you don't do it, nobody else will think it's important either. When we do invest, we may not become "gods," but the sky in definitely the limit on what we can accomplish.

For complete show notes and downloads related to this episode, visit: http://www.jasonmefford.com/jammingwithjason/

Get Out of the Echo Chamber

You're in an echo chamber and probably don't even realize it. In this #JammingwithJason #podcast episode we look into how your echo chambers are probably holding you back in realizing your potential, and how you can break free.

I'm also sharing some thoughts on the recently released 2021 North American Pulse of #InternalAudit report. Take a listen and then read the report for yourself. Choose what to believe and what not to believe. Most importantly, make your own decisions and stop letting other people tell you what to believe and what to do.

True freedom comes when you free your mind.

Listen in at: http://www.jasonmefford.com/jammingwithjason/

Flashback Friday: Community and Coaching

In order to really learn we need knowledge, skills, abilities and experience. Abilities come from taking knowledge and skills we acquire and through reflection and application figuring out how to apply them to our situation and circumstance for our benefit. We then fully learn through repetition and experience actually doing those things.

In this #jammingwithjason #internalauditpodcast episode I dig into why this is so important and how we do this.

I've read thousands of books in my life, but the knowledge does no good if I stop with reading the book (knowledge). The great Bruce Lee said, “Knowing is not enough, we must apply. Willing is not enough, we must do.”

The fastest way to transform knowledge into action and wisdom is by joining a community of like-minded people, and investing in coaching.

If you are serious about lifelong learning and transforming yourself for your success in life and your career, listen to learn how to turbo-charge your learning.

If you are a #chiefauditexecutive and ready for a community of like-minded peers and coaching, join the #CAE Forum: https://jasonmefford.mykajabi.com/caeforum

If you are in #internalaudit and was a community of like-minded peers, join the cRisk Academy Facebook group: https://www.facebook.com/groups/criskacademy/

The documentary about the community of musicians in Laurel Canyon area of Los Angeles that I mentioned in this episode is called: Echo in the Canyon. Flashback Friday: Giving Up Some Independence i...

Independence and objectivity are two words I hear auditors use incorrectly all the time. Even though the standards describe internal audit as being independent and objective, the truth is very few internal audit functions are truly independent, but we have to remain objective. While we may not be able to control our independence (don't worry I explain in the episode) we have complete control over being objective.

"It takes 20 years to build a reputation and five minutes to ruin it. If you think about that, you'll do things differently." Warren Buffet. While lacking objectivity won't really get you "killed" it can definitely get you fired.

Objective Centric and Demand Driven Internal Au...

Which centric approach are you following? I'm speaking with the legendary Tim Leech about the difference between objective, risk, compliance, process, and control centric approaches ... and centric is not the same as based.

Listen in at: http://www.jasonmefford.com/jammingwithjason/ and learn the difference so you can start improving the value you add to your organization.

Risk-based internal auditing is objective-centric when you actually link to key objectives ... a critical step most in #internalaudit forget. Agile Auditing Doesn't Mean Faster with Toby De...

We've been talking about agile auditing for years, so why are a few succeeding and others are reluctant to embrace it or failing in their implementation?

Agile doesn't mean faster, and it doesn't apply to just one part of the audit process. It is a paradigm shift and one of the most important changes to #internalaudit in many years.

I am talking with Toby DeRoche, who has spent the last several years understanding exactly how to apply the principles of agile into the whole audit process in a practical way. What works, what doesn't, what organizations are really doing that are successful, and is here to share so you can make the shift to agile auditing and avoid the painful learning curve.

Listen in at: http://www.jasonmefford.com/jammingwithjason/

When you are ready for the step-by-step "how to" for agile auditing, learn more about the Certified Agile Auditor Professional (cAAP) course mentioned during this episode at: https://ondemand.criskacademy.com/p/caap/?affcode=105582_jpp6czlf/

E122 Corporate and Individual Integrity with Jo...

In today's episode we discuss with John Fanning (V.P. of Business Development with Integrity Risk International) how important ethics are in today's businesses. Many companies treat ethics as a checklist and don't seem to actively promote a positive ethical culture within their organization.

Integrity is an important trait not only personally, but on a corporate level as well. Businesses with integrity will make positive changes when problems are found.

In order to foster a positive culture within our organizations we need to stand by what we say even if short term gains may seem to suffer, because long term gains will greatly benefit.

Listen in at: http://www.jasonmefford.com/jammingwithjason/

Communicating in a Way to Increase Trust with A...

Does the way you communicate affect whether others trust you? Much, much more than you realize. In this #jammingwithjason episode I speak with Ann Butera about how to make changes in the way we communicate so we are exhibiting all three behaviors of trust.

You'll be amazed at how some little things we do every day aren't communicated to others the way we expected and are actually eroding trust, making it much more difficult for us in our work. No matter how good you think you communicate, we can all do better by incorporating Ann's wisdom.

Imagine how much easier your life will be when you learn how to say anything to anybody.

#internalaudit #communication

Flashback Friday: A Tale of Two Careers

It was the best of times, it was the worst of time, it was the age of wisdom, it was the age of foolishness. These words from Charles Dickens "The Tale of Two Cities" is the inspiration for this week's episode.

Two auditors start out graduating from similar universities, get similar starting positions, but in 10 years those two auditors are in very different places.

One is still a junior or senior auditor and the other is a director or chief audit executive earning 3-5 times the salary of the first auditor.

Do you know the difference between these two auditors?

Find out in this week's #jammingwithjason #internalauditpodcast. Listen in at: http://www.jasonmefford.com/jammingwithjason/

When you are ready to take your career as a #chiefauditexecutive to the next level, join the CAE Briefing executive leadership program mentioned in this episode at: https://jasonmefford.mykajabi.com/caebriefing

Join thousands of lifelong learners in internal audit, risk and compliance at: With hundreds of learning options, you are sure to find exactly what you need: https://ondemand.criskacademy.com/?affcode=105582_jpp6czlf

Listen in at: http://www.jasonmefford.com/jammingwithjason/

Best Of: RESPECT for Internal Audit

I hear some Chief Audit Executives complaining they "don't get no respect" like a Rodney Dangerfield comedy skit. When Dangerfield said it, it was funny. Not so if you find your self saying that in real life.

In this week's #jammingwithjason #internalauditpodcast I discuss RESPECT for internal audit. You see, respect is a two way street. There are some things we need to do as individuals and as a profession to get the respect we want. I dig into some questions to ask yourself and practical steps you can start taking today.

And ... an episode about RESPECT wouldn't be complete unless I sang a little Aretha Franklin, and told a few Rodney Dangerfield jokes too.

Please share this episode with your friends and colleagues.

If you are a CAE, book your call to join a community of like-minded CAEs in the CAE Forum. When you join the CAE Forum you will get much more clarity on exactly how you can get the RESPECT you deserve and elevate the status of internal audit in your organization. https://jasonmefford.mykajabi.com/caeforum
