Flashback Friday: What Got You Here, Won't Get ...

Ultimately you are the one responsible for your career advancement. Recent surveys show employers are investing less in the training and development on their employees (e.g. 80% of employees state their employer does not offer training, and 86% of workers feel their manager is not skilled in developing employees). Ouch!

The truth is, what got you to where you are now, won't get you to where you want to be. Achieving your goals and career aspirations will require you obtaining experience, training and certifications different than what you currently have, to move on to the next level. But our personal and professional development is also just not about moving to the next level. You need those thing even in your current role as the world changes and moves forward.

In this episode we discuss results from a recent survey and steps you can take to determine what you need to get where you want to go.

To listen and for complete show notes and links to downloads, visit: http://www.jasonmefford.com/jammingwithjason/

To download and read the survey mentioned in this episode: Pulse of the American Worker: Special Report - The Future of Work, Career Expectations and Skills: http://news.prudential.com/presskits/pulse-american-worker-special-report.htm

To fill out your application for membership in the Chief Audit Executive (CAE) Forum visit: https://jasonmefford.mykajabi.com/caeforum

If you are ready to start investing in yourself, check out the technical and soft-skill training options through cRisk Academy, the #1 video on-demand and certification training platform for internal auditors. Flashback Friday: I Get By With a Little Help F...

The Beatles were right when they said "I get by with a little help from my friends." In fact the only way we get by is with help from our friends. Sometimes we get the idea we need push forward and do everything ourselves. I get it. We are taught to be independent and do things ourselves. This was engrained in me my whole life.

The truth is, we all need the help of others and need to be there to help others. In fact, if you don't think you need help... you probably needs the most help. Also, the further we get in our career, the more we need help, but the less we reach out.

Trying to do the job alone often leads to stress, emotional, psychological, and even physical pain. Yes, you'll hear how I broke my hand trying to do it by myself, and also a story of a bricklayer trying to do the job alone that I heard almost 30 years ago that has stuck with me ever since.

I even need your help, and when you listen, you'll find out how.

If you are a #CAE and are ready for a little help from your friends, schedule you call to join the CAE Forum at: https://jasonmefford.mykajabi.com/caeforum

Listen in at: http://www.jasonmefford.com/jammingwithjason/

Flashback Friday: Go From Being One of the Team...

I'm talking with my friend Bruce Turner again about his recent book "Team Leader’s Guide to Internal Audit Leadership" in this #jammingwithjason #internalauditpodcast.

The role of #internalaudit team leaders is being reshaped to accommodate the recognition of Chief Audit Executives (CAEs) as trusted advisors within the C-suite. This requires team leaders to transition to a higher level by providing practical, meaningful ideas to optimize internal audit’s value proposition through attuned, balanced, and credible day-to-day audit engagement activities.

His book provides fresh, timely, and higher-level insights on the expanding role of team leaders, and the need for them to deliver internal auditing services on a day-to-day basis that optimize the value proposition for the benefit of internal audit’s stakeholders.

Bruce Turner, has more than 40 years of practitioner and leadership experience in internal auditing, including being the Chief Audit Executive at several organizations. He has recruited dozens of new auditors into internal audit roles throughout his career and watched proudly as their careers blossomed.

You can find his book on Amazon: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B088YTMHD6/

Listen in at: http://www.jasonmefford.com/jammingwithjason/

Flashback Friday: Invest in Yourself or Nobody ...

As we move forward in our career it's easy to wake up one day and realize we haven't really invested in ourselves in years. I know, cause I've been there too. We get so busy dealing with the day-to-day stresses on our job, trying to balance life-work commitments that we don't take time to invest in ourselves. We become dependent on our employer to provide or pay for training, and when that doesn't happen we usually stop taking the time for personal development. After all, we have so much else on our plate, and we don't believe we "have" the time or money.

In this episode, I discuss two "gods" of the strings that we can learn a lot about how to become an expert in our craft. It takes, blood, sweat and tears ... of daily / weekly / monthly consistent dedication ... and a mindset to "make" the time or money investment in ourselves. Learn how these two individuals put in the time to become icons of their instruments.

If you want to be at the top of your game, you have to make time and invest in yourself. If you don't do it, nobody else will think it's important either. When we do invest, we may not become "gods," but the sky in definitely the limit on what we can accomplish.

For complete show notes and downloads related to this episode, visit: http://www.jasonmefford.com/jammingwithjason/

Flashback Friday: Community and Coaching

In order to really learn we need knowledge, skills, abilities and experience. Abilities come from taking knowledge and skills we acquire and through reflection and application figuring out how to apply them to our situation and circumstance for our benefit. We then fully learn through repetition and experience actually doing those things.

In this #jammingwithjason #internalauditpodcast episode I dig into why this is so important and how we do this.

I've read thousands of books in my life, but the knowledge does no good if I stop with reading the book (knowledge). The great Bruce Lee said, “Knowing is not enough, we must apply. Willing is not enough, we must do.”

The fastest way to transform knowledge into action and wisdom is by joining a community of like-minded people, and investing in coaching.

If you are serious about lifelong learning and transforming yourself for your success in life and your career, listen to learn how to turbo-charge your learning.

If you are a #chiefauditexecutive and ready for a community of like-minded peers and coaching, join the #CAE Forum: https://jasonmefford.mykajabi.com/caeforum

If you are in #internalaudit and was a community of like-minded peers, join the cRisk Academy Facebook group: https://www.facebook.com/groups/criskacademy/

The documentary about the community of musicians in Laurel Canyon area of Los Angeles that I mentioned in this episode is called: Echo in the Canyon. Your Habits Will Make or Break You

In life we don't necessarily get what we want, we usually get what our habits give us. We have two kinds of habits; good habits and habits that no longer serve us. In todays episode I speak about how we can end habits that no longer help us and start building habits that do, so we can build our lives the way we want them.

Listen in at: http://www.jasonmefford.com/jammingwithjason/

Flashback Friday: Giving Up Some Independence i...

Independence and objectivity are two words I hear auditors use incorrectly all the time. Even though the standards describe internal audit as being independent and objective, the truth is very few internal audit functions are truly independent, but we have to remain objective. While we may not be able to control our independence (don't worry I explain in the episode) we have complete control over being objective.

"It takes 20 years to build a reputation and five minutes to ruin it. If you think about that, you'll do things differently." Warren Buffet. While lacking objectivity won't really get you "killed" it can definitely get you fired.

To access the offer from cRisk Academy to save $100 on your first two on-demand trainings, visit: https://criskacademy.com/save100/

Best Of: RESPECT for Internal Audit

I hear some Chief Audit Executives complaining they "don't get no respect" like a Rodney Dangerfield comedy skit. When Dangerfield said it, it was funny. Not so if you find your self saying that in real life.

In this week's #jammingwithjason #internalauditpodcast I discuss RESPECT for internal audit. You see, respect is a two way street. There are some things we need to do as individuals and as a profession to get the respect we want. I dig into some questions to ask yourself and practical steps you can start taking today.

And ... an episode about RESPECT wouldn't be complete unless I sang a little Aretha Franklin, and told a few Rodney Dangerfield jokes too.

Please share this episode with your friends and colleagues.

If you are a CAE, book your call to join a community of like-minded CAEs in the CAE Forum. When you join the CAE Forum you will get much more clarity on exactly how you can get the RESPECT you deserve and elevate the status of internal audit in your organization. https://jasonmefford.mykajabi.com/caeforum

In this week's episode I speak with Steve Goepfert about lessons he learned from being a CAE. We discuss various topics including the difference between being a Chief Auditor, and being a Chief Audit Executive; what it really takes to be a CAE; how to provide those moments of head snap (you'll have to listen to learn more); how to prove and communicate the value internal audit provides; and not getting so engrained in the mechanics that we don't focus on the big picture.

Steve Goepfert was the Vice President - Internal Audit (Chief Auditor) for United Airlines in Chicago, Illinois. He assumed the role after the merger of United and Continental. He had previously been Chief Auditor at Continental Airlines for 21 years.

He was the 2006-2007 Chairman of the Board for the Institute of Internal Auditors, Inc. (IIA). At the Global level, Steve served on the IIA's Executive Committee for 6 years (2003-09) and on the IIA Board for 7 years. He previously served as Senior Vice Chairman and Vice Chairman – Professional Services and is a past President of the Houston Chapter (1999-2000), and served on its Board for 17 years. In 2012, Steve was inducted into the inaugural class of the IIA's American Hall of Distinguished Audit Practitioners. He was recognized in 2013 with the Victor Brink award for distinguished service to the IIA.

He is now enjoying retirement in Tennessee. Flashback Friday: Risk-Based Internal Auditing

Even though we have been using the term "risk-based auditing" for over 20 years, many internal audit groups have not really implemented it... and many misunderstand the concepts behind it.

In this episode I explain the challenges and opportunities facing internal audit as a profession and why moving to a truly risk-based approach is the opportunity for us to overcome those challenges. I also discuss the confusion with the terms objective-based, or risk management-based audit.

I've been preaching risk-based internal auditing for over 15 years and am considered to be one of the leading world experts on risk-based internal audit (and yes I wrote a book on this, frameworks, certifications and have trained internal auditors all over the world).

If you missed the webinar on Establishing or Improving a Risk-Based Audit Approach, you can now access it in the cRisk Academy on-demand library at: https://ondemand.criskacademy.com/p/establishing-or-improving-a-risk-based-audit-approach/

To learn more about how you can enroll in a new course and receive your Certified Risk-Based Internal Auditor (cRBIA) professional designation visit: https://ondemand.criskacademy.com/p/certified-risk-based-internal-auditor-crbia/

Flashback Friday: Making the Shift to Agile Aud...

Moving to an agile internal audit approach is a big shift in mindset. It is not just performing audits in a more nimble or lean way. It is about using agile methodologies to transform the whole audit process. This method produces a more collaborative approach with the audit client, a more self-managed team mentality, and scheduling the audits in time box work cycles (sprints). This fundamentally changes how we plan, perform, staff and report on audits.

Jason Mefford is joined by Rick Wright, CAE of YRC Worldwide to discuss the big picture view of agile auditing, how to transform your audit team into an agile methodology team, and discusses Rick's upcoming book on Agile Auditing that will be published summer of 2019, which includes a practical approach and case studies on how to move from traditional auditing to agile auditing.

Flashback Friday: Moving From A CPE Mindset To ...

Many professionals get caught in a CPE mindset when it comes to professional development. A CPE mindset will not get you promotions or new positions. In the knowledge revolution, we have to become lifelong learners - those concerned with learning and growing each day, week, and month - not just completing hours of random CPE each year. Find out how to switch mindsets, increase your likelihood of having your training requests approved, and some questions you can ask yourself to be proactive with your learning opportunities.

Flashback Friday: Auditing Humor and Other Oxym...

As auditors we tend to be a very serious group of people. In our attempt to appear competent and professional we often switch over into the boring, robot-like realm ... a place that gives rise to much of the auditor stereotypes.

In this episode we discuss how humor and creativity can actually make us better auditors and more effective in our job, plus we have a lot more fun doing the work. I'm joined by Mike Jacka, a truly hilarious auditor who has been waving this flag for decades. Come laugh with us on this episode and walk away with some advice for how you too can incorporate more humor and creativity into auditing.

Mike Jacka is the Chief Creative Pilot of Flying Pig Audit Consulting and Training Solutions.

You can get a copy of Mike's book "Auditing Humor: and other oxymorons" through the IIA Bookstore or on Amazon at: https://www.amazon.com/Auditing-Humor-oxymorons-Mike-Jacka/dp/0991280903/ref=sr_1_6

You can reach out to Mike at: mjacka@fpacts.com

Traditional Internal Audit is Dying

For the times, they are a changing in the internal audit profession.

You can choose to stick your head in the ground and ignore what's going on, but you may end up like some CAEs who just got let go from their positions for sticking with a traditional internal audit mindset.

In this week's podcast I share why Traditional Internal Audit is dying. We've been seeing this for years, but I share with you some recent events and evidence that prove again that this is the trend we are seeing.

If you are still spending most of our time auditing lower level process controls and focusing on historical events and internal controls, you are probably stuck in the traditional rut and need to start working your way out by transitioning to a true risk-based internal audit methodology.

Value-based auditing, objective-based auditing vs. risk-based internal auditing I also discuss in this episode.

If you got the money, honey we got your disease."

I've been in the online space now for about 10 years, and I know all the different words people use may be a little confusing to know exactly what you are getting.

In this #jammingwithjason #internalauditpodcast I do a little public service announcement (PSA) to help you hack your way through the jungle by explaining what certain words mean in the online space, what you can expect by the words used, and three questions to ask yourself before you register or purchase online webinars or course ... so you know what you are getting and don't get surprised.

Online vs. virtual. Personality-Based Internal Auditing with Barbar...

A lot of people are advocating auditing culture. Problem is, it's very swishy and difficult to objectively audit. A much more practical approach is to utilize some newer research around Personality System Interaction (PSI) patterns and utilize the Organizational Personality Framework which provides new, innovative levers for change, based on analyzing the organization's preferred personality system interaction patterns.

In this #jammingwithjason #internalauditpodcast I am joined by Barbara Siegenthaler, a pioneer in a systemic approach that combines business expertise and PSI theory into a 360° degree testing and thinking grid for human factors - across the organization. She is the founder of The Organizational Personality Framework and the Personality-based Internal Auditing PBA® methodology.

Both approaches leverage the explanatory and predictive value of the Theory of Personality Systems Interactions. PSI Theory is a meta model from the domain of personality and motivation psychology, considered by academic psychology in Germany as "groundbreaking" and "highly innovative".

This is an episode when I had the opportunity to geek out with Barbara and show how we can improve what we do as #internalaudit when we apply principles from other disciplines into how we audit.

Learn more about Barbara and these principles at: https://www.personality-based-audit.com/ and https://www.savanteon.com/

Relevance and Relationships with Hal Garyn

In this #jammingwithjason #internalauditpodcast I'm talking about relevance and relationships with the one and only Hal Garyn. If you don't already know Hal, you should.

For many years #internalaudit has been losing its relevance in some organizations, and if you were having trouble with your relevance before, after what we've experienced in early 2020, your job just got harder. But fear not, in this episode we discuss what you can do to become more relevant.

Since 80% of challenges stem from relationship issues, it's also fitting that we discuss relationships. If you want a seat at the table you have to earn it, and keep it. The way you do that is by showing your relevance and developing relationships.

As I mention at the end of the episode, if you are a Chief Audit Executive and struggling with either of these, please reach out to me. Send me an email or message me through LinkedIn.

Lead Your Team Well

I've had the Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young song "Teach Your Children" in my head this week, which made me ponder about how we need to also "lead our team well."

"You who are on the road, must have a code that you can live by" which I believe is servant leadership.

We don't often talk about leadership, or have leadership training opportunities for ourselves or our team in internal audit, but these skills are some of the most important ones for us to acquire and develop. Exactly the sort of thing we work on in the CAE Forum.

When we show up as a servant leader, productivity increases, we work less, have less stress and you "can look at them and sigh, and know they love you."

I can't cover everything in one episode, so here is a great leadership training opportunity for you and your team. Make sure to share this with your whole team ... and it's free. When you learn and implement these four secrets you will see an increase productivity.

4 Secrets to Leading Productive and Thriving Audit Teams Tuesday, June 30, 2020 · 9:00 AM PDT https://www.bigmarker.com/crisk-academy/4-Secrets-to-Leading-Productive-and-Thriving-Audit-Teams

Here's to leading your team well this next week!

RESPECT for Internal Audit

Time Keeps On Slipping Slipping

If I could save time in a bottle, ahhh those beautiful words from Jim Croce. Problem is you can't. The one thing all humans have an equal amount of is time ... the challenge for most of us it just keeps slipping, slipping away and we wake up years later in exactly the same place.

The quality of your life depends on the choices you make and how you "take" time. It's time to quit complaining or thinking you don't "have enough time" or "now is not a good time." TODAY is the best day to start making changes and take the time to have a better life.

Listen in on this week's #jammingwithjason #internalauditpodcast at: http://www.jasonmefford.com/jammingwithjason/ or where ever you enjoy listening to podcasts, like Apple Podcasts. Community and Coaching

Listen in at: http://www.jasonmefford.com/jammingwithjason/

Limitless Learning

In this #jammingwithjason #internalauditpodcast episode I dig into improving your learning so you can unlock your limitless potential. It's a bit of a potpourri episode, one where we literally talk about potpourri, but a few other topics besides learning :)

You don't just need training, you need to LEARN ... and they are two different things. You can take a training and not learn anything, and you can learn without going to training. To learn you need a combination of knowledge, skills, abilities, and experience. Training only helps you with the first two.

One of the best ways to improve your abilities and get experience is through community with others. Without this aspect of learning you really don't integrate and "learn" the information fully.

Come join me in some communities where I hang out so we can interact directly.
