Even a tsunami can’t be that high, but what about… a megatsunami? A regular tsunami is bad enough. As it comes closer to the coast, it can grow up to 160 feet high, or about 15 stories! But what if the wave height wasn’t hundreds, but thousands of feet? Sounds like some unrealistic plot for a disaster movie, but it has happened! These skyscrapers of waves are called megatsunamis. They are so huge, they could’ve wiped the dinosaurs off the face of this planet! And surprisingly, for a tsunami to get upgraded to “mega” status, it’s not all about size. But what causes them? And can a megatsunami happen today?

It’s probably one of the strangest places on Earth, and there are plenty more of them out there. So, there’s a mysterious place out in the middle of the Caspian Sea, about 60 miles from the city of Baku, Azerbaijan. Local fishermen gave it the spooky name of Black Rocks, thanks to the dark substance found on the stones there. In the 1940s a geological group went to take a look at the area, and they soon learned that the black stuff was oil. There was tons and tons of it under the seabed, which naturally attracted a lot of attention...

How Astronauts Make Oxygen in Space from Their ...
Sending 1 lb of cargo into space costs about $10,000! So how do space agencies afford to send supplies like oxygen, water, and food to their astronauts? Before they found a more efficient solution, they’d pack all the water into space with them in their rockets. The water took up a lot of room that could’ve otherwise been used for other supplies. That, and the added weight wasted fuel. So short answer: nope, it doesn’t go with the crew from the get-go. That means they deliver it, right? That’d be too risky…and expensive! There’s no 100% guarantee that something bad won’t happen to the cargo ship at launch or on the way to the International Space Station. If the cargo doesn’t get to the station, then the next delivery will have to wait a very long time. That’s not an option since it’s dangerous for the astronauts. Ok, so let’s break it down item by item.

Not Even a Single Rain Drop Has Fallen Here in ...
There are some regions on our planet that do not receive rainfall for years. But what's the driest place on Earth? First of all, dry doesn’t necessarily mean hot. A desert is somewhere without much water and where there are almost no plants or animals. The McMurdo Dry Valleys of Antarctica fit this description perfectly. There’s been no rain here for several million years, and so it’s not covered in ice! And the last time it had life was 90 million years ago when this place was a swamp filled with countless insects and trees. There’s no snow in the valleys because of the strong winds there that reach a speed of 200 mph. So McMurdo stays completely dry. There is some water in a few lakes, but it’s so salty that practically nothing lives there apart from microscopic organisms. The temperature in summer here is 5°F, and in winter it can reach -90°F. Even though there’s almost no life, the McMurdo Valleys are fascinating to scientists because their dry conditions are actually similar to the ones on Mars.

The Horrific Shipwreck That Wasn't the Titanic ...
The SS Arctic, the fastest passenger liner of its time, set out to cross the Atlantic in 1854. A smaller ship, the SS Vesta, was passing through the same path as the Arctic and crashed into its side. It was soon clear that the damage that seemed minor in the Arctic was far worse. What happened later went down in history as the most shameful sinking.
