Satellite Sisters International News Round-Up +...
On today's Satellite Sisters, Julie leads off with an International News Round-Up that starts in outer space and lands in Thailand.  We are all very happy to hear that the Philae comet lander has woken up and tweeted a message to earth.  Hello!  Also in Julie's tour of the world: A flood in Tblisi, Georgia has wild animals roaming the streets, Putin keeps the Pope waiting (again), eating live red ants in Thailand may be good for you but the raw fish might not. You heard it on Satellite Sisters first. The sisters discuss the comments of embattled Nobel Laureate Tim Hunt.  Kudos to the female scientists who tweeted their ridicule with the hashtag #Distractinglysexy.  Comedic revenge is always sweet, but Lian asks if some of the other punishment over the top.  Sheila's school year is over so she fills us in on her latest attempt at gift card living, an ill-fated hike that may be her last, a shoe injury that left a mark and some tension at the dry cleaners.  In other words, Pluto's moons. And Liz tips us off that a piece she wrote for Fortune Magazine about unconscious bias in the board room will be posted on the Fortune blog in the next day or two.  We'll share it around so you can post your own comments.       See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information. Satellite Sister Julie Buys and Unbuys a House,...
On today's Satellite Sisters show, Julie buys and unbuys a house. What? Wait. Why? Blame it on the hatch. And no, this is not an episode of LOST. Monica has good news for Julie about parallel parking. No need to ever learn. Monica also has good news for Liz about an unstainable shirt. It's a potential lifesaver for Liz, a lifelong stainer. Liz has a terrifying tale of her ferocious Ferris trapping an unsuspecting painter in her bedroom. Sorry, Steve. It's not the first time Liz has gotten a message at work about a wild animal in her home. Who remembers the tale of the raccoon enjoying life on her living couch? Julie has a movie quiz for the sisters about the new movie Aloha. Despite what you've heard on Rotten Tomatoes,  Julie enthusiastically endorses Aloha.  She calls it  "pleasant" and ""it's not going to kill you." Really makes you want to run right out and buys your tickets, right? Julie's attitude:   A fine movie to see in Texas during a 300 year storm.  Breaking news on Triscuits, people.  Have you heard about Martha Stewart's new flavor?  It's all part of a "celebrity Triscuit" effort.  We've got some ideas about Satellite Sisters triscuits, including Monica's completely breakthrough flavor idea.  So new we can't even write it here.  You have to listen. We are not in business with Triscuits in any way, but we are longtime lovers of the savory cracker. Other items: Mindy Kaling is going to have her own Satellite Sister on The Mindy Project this year.  Yeah. Congratulations, Sister. Paul McCartney has changed his policy on pot.  Thanks, grandpa. SSWordWrite 2015 with author Eleni N Gage
Satellite Sisters WordWrite Festival 2015 author interview with writer Eleni N. Gage about her latest novel ,The Ladies of Managua.    For more information about Eleni Gage and her book, click here.    When Maria Vazquez returns to Nicaragua for her beloved grandfather's funeral, she brings with her a mysterious package from her grandmother's past--and a secret of her own. And she also carries the burden of her tense relationship with her mother Ninexin, once a storied revolutionary, now a tireless government employee. Between Maria and Ninexin lies a chasm created by the death of Maria's father, who was killed during the revolution when Maria was an infant, leaving her to be raised by her grandmother Isabela as Ninexin worked to build the new Nicaragua. As Ninexin tries to reach her daughter, and Maria wrestles with her expectations for her romance with an older man, Isabela, the mourning widow, is lost in memories of attending boarding school in 1950's New Orleans, where she loved and lost almost sixty years ago. When the three women come together to bid farewell to the man who anchored their family, they are forced to confront their complicated, passionate relationships with each other and with their country--and to reveal the secrets that each of them have worked to conceal.  Lushly evocative of Nicaragua, its tumultuous history, and vibrant present, Eleni N. Gage's The Ladies of Managua brings you into the lives of three strong and magnetic women, as they uncover the ramifications of the choices they made in their pasts and begin to understand the ways in which love can shape their futures. SS Word Write 2015: Author interview with Elyss...
The Satellite Sisters author interview series, the Word Write Festival 2015, continues with novelist Elyssa Friendland talking about her book Love and Miss Communication, a modern rom-com about digital detox For more about the book and the author, click here  Synopsis Evie Rosen has had enough. She’s tired of the partners at her law firm e-mailing her at all hours of the night. The thought of another online date makes her break out in a cold sweat. She’s over the clever hashtags and the endless selfies. So when her career hits a surprising roadblock and her heart is crushed by Facebook, Evie decides it’s time to put down her smartphone for good. (Beats stowing it in her underwear—she’s done that too!) And that’s when she discovers a fresh start for real conversations, fewer distractions, and living in the moment, even if the moments are heartbreakingly difficult. Babies are born; marriages teeter; friendships are tested. Evie just may find love and a new direction when she least expects it, but she also learns that just because you unplug your phone doesn’t mean you can unplug from life.   Host and author Lian Dolan and guest Elyssa Friedman talk about love in the time of social media what it's like to bring our a first novel and what all lawyers seem to want to be writers.  See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information. Satellite Sisters Fall TV Preview, App Review a...
On today's podcast, Liz, Monica and Lian offer a Satellite Sisters Fall TV Preview, an App review and more news of the Snoopy comeback. Lian steps in for Urban Nana this weekend and hosts Julie's son, daughter-in-law and baby Josephine.  But first there's some babyproofing to be done and some Martha Stewart guest room standards to be applied.  It's all starts with the floors. Liz describes what she's up to this week - "the best week of the year on my job" means she just sits around and watches TV all week.  Yes, people actually do that for a living but not usually her.  She's happy to report that the new Rob Lowe/Fred Savage comedy The Grinder is hee-larious and kinda heartwarming.  She also got to meet Snoopy, who is hard at work on his new Peanuts movie for the end of the year.  Lian was not kidding on Tuesday's show.  The beagle's on a major comeback trail. In other media news, major Satellite Sisters congratulations to Pitch Perfect 2, for being the #1 movie of the weekend.  The actual words in the Wall Street Journal headline are PITCH PERFECT 2 TROUNCES ITS COMPETITION .  Take that, Mad Max.   And kudos to Mindy Kaling and The Mindy Project for moving to Hulu.  We'll be there for you, sister. Glad we could save your show.  That's what sisters are for.   Monica announces that Uber has finally come to Portland, Oregon.  Now she wants to know how it actually works.  Plus, she's got questions about some other new apps including Airpnp, which Lian and Liz agree sounds awful for all involved. Good health news:  even walking for two minutes during your work day is good for you, so Monica's on it. Bad health news: Are twitchy eyelids a medical thing, a stress thing or not a thing at all? Liz needs to know. Does it have anything to do with this news about stress? On the Satellite Sisters Facebook group, there are discussions about skorts - both pro and con. Saving Mindy, Eating Crickets and more Post Of...
On today's Satellite Sisters,  Liz, Sheila and Monica start and finish with Mother's Day wishes, first for all the mothers in the Satellite Sisterhood and last for our niece and Satellite Sister Next Gen Meghan who will become a mom for the first time next month. In other news, Monica files a complete trip report on her beachfront bargain hunt on Annamaria Island in Florida.  Let Monica be your personal Trip Advisor.  Sounds like it was a total winner plus it allowed her to hone an important skill to land the perfect rental.  Negotiation. That's  a first for her. She's also got some Portland food trends to share:  Hams (yes) and Crickets (no).  Sheila checks out the new sushi place in South Pasadena with less success, but she did hear about a couple of made-for-TV characters Rufus and Lucas.  Or at least that's what she thought she heard over the din of the train. Liz wants to get everyone on the Save Mindy bandwagon.  Minday Kaling is a longtime fave.  We can do it, sisters! Liz also envisions a crossover Satellite Sisters episode for the fall.  Mindy's got a new book coming out in September.  Ours comes out in October.  We are thinking joint tour!  Or at least a little Mondy visit to the show.  Yes! It's fate. Liz also recruits some help in the dream interpretation area.  She does not understand a recent dream but is super glad that Don Cheadle is her new boyfriend.   Thanks to Betty for posting this great story about growing old with your friends on our Facebook group.  Tiny House movement meets Satellite Sisters movement.  We are in. More thanks to Karen for her post about a major post office fail.  But how were they to know the difference between Austria and Australia?? And do you want the backstory about the best little gelato place in Bend, Oregon?  Bonta Gelato.  Yes, you do, people, because it's part travel adventure, part love story, part agriculture heart and all Oregon soul.  Just one of the many reasons the Sarellite Sisters love Bend.   See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information. Listen to the new Satellite Sisters show.  Liz provides a complete Las Vegas Trip Report on her road trip to the New Media Expo and The Podcast Awards.  Many thanks to Corny Koehl, Ian Punnett and Margery Punnett for the road trip/friendship/hilarity.  A highlight of the trip was a visit to the Cirque du Soleil Beatles show LOVE.  Highly recommened to all.  It was an amazing and moving and totally delightful experience and a good reminder in the midst of all the Vegas noise:  All You Need Is Love.  It's actually true.  Also at the New Media Expo, Liz was very happy to meet Matt Cox, host of Brunch With The Brits podcast.  Turns out that Matt Cox lived in Moscow when Julie Dolan did and he listened to Julie's reports about Moscow on Satellite Sisters.  Also on the show, Monica brings back her wildly popular segment Science of the Obvious.  She's got some science news on why we love our dogs.  And more news on the need to exercise.  So no shockers there.  Julie's back with Putin Watch.  She's paying very close attention to Vladimir Putin's latest attempt to rehabilitate Stalin.  That's right, people.  Stalin.  On a lighter note, she wants us to go see the new Helen Mirren movie Woman In Gold and she thinks her hairdresser is trying to ditch her.   See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
