It's been a great summer of #satsisterssummerfun for all of us @instagram.  Thanks for the more than 1100 photos that got posted.  In a random drawing, we selected two winners.  Congratulations to @sosaysshe and @rustysun.  Email us at sisters@satellitesisters.com to tell us where to mail your prize - a fantastic package of Sol de Janeiro 2-Step Samba Foot Fetish Care to keep your summer fun going on.  Stay tuned for an upcoming announcement of a new contest for the fall. On today's Satellite Sisters podcast, Sheila anticipates Liz's birthday later this week and shares some very vague predictions from online horoscopes. Sheila's birthday comes later in the month but she's a Libra.  Sheila also has some offbeat practices about how to beat the heat.  Think fold-out couch, ceiling fan and Brazilian sarong.  Plus, she's wandering the aisles of Rite-Aid daily now and has spotted some new products worthy of her investigation.  She tries them out on Liz and Monica. It's not in her horoscope, but Monica is fine with the return of the fanny pack as predicted in the New York Times this week.  She believes in hands-free living.  Go for it sister.  Also on today's show,  Liz shares some information about an email she received from Mercy Corps in response to the drowning of 3 year old Aylan Kurdi. Here is the photo essay about about the special items Syrian refugees carried with them created by Mercy Corp workers in refugee camps.   See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information. Heroes, Romance and our apology to Greta Gerwig.
On today's Satellite Sisters, Julie, Liz, Sheila and Lian discuss where heroes come from.  On a story in the New York Times, evolutionary dynamicists (whatever that means) tell us how evolution has favored heroes.  Thank goodness.  Sheila is trying to give up sugar.  She has a list of food she has had to deny herself.  It's not easy.  She also has a few new restaurant names around Pasadena and Altadena that are bugging her.  What do you think? Liz questions a couple of new anti-aging practices: one is this face fitness program in New York and the other is an anti-aging potion she saw advertised that allegedly "battles graying".  Julie has some commentary on two new movies:  She has a cultural issue with No Escape starting Owen Wilson and Lake Bell, and recommends Mistress America starring Greta Gerwig.  Speaking of Greta, we hereby issue an apology to Greta for the misinformation we spread about her midway through the show which we correct by the end.  Oops.  Here's her bio from IMDB. Love ya, Greta! Lian wants to draw our attention to this wedding announcement in the New York Times for one tiny detail: the romantic theatrical gesture of the pearl and the kiss.  She thinks maybe Sheila and Liz could find romantic partners on the stage! It's the final week of our instagram contest #satsisterssummerfun so be sure to follow @satsisters and tag your own fun photos #satsisterssummerfun to be eligible to win our great Sol de Janeiro 2 Step Foot Fetish Care.     See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information. Satellite Sisters August 16, 2015: All Five Si...
On today's Satellite Sisters, we tackle workplace issues from thermostat wars and millenials who bring their parents to job interviews to today's eye-opening story about what its like to work at Amazon. First up, Monica has Science of the Obvious:  Men and women seem to prefer different temperatures in the workplace. It's actual science, people. What's her personal plan for dealing with this? Lian brings us a story from a career coach on Huffington Post about how the parents of millenials may actually be holding their adult children back.   Liz asks:  Just exactly how important is it to you to make sure customers get their toilet paper quickly?  The New York Times has a fascinating story today about the workplace culture at Amazon today.  Entitled INSIDE AMAZON; WRESTLING BIG IDEAS IN A BRUISING WORKPLACES, it's definitely worth a read.  Does your impression of Amazon change when you read male ex-employees say "Nearly every person I work with I saw cry at their desk." Or that a true Amazonian is called an "Amabot" because they enjoy the results of the "continual performance improvement algorithm."  Yikes.  Are we suprised that there's not a single woman on Amazon's top leadership team?  Discuss.  Julie has a complete International News Round-Up from Uzbekistan, Kurdistan, Thailand and Dubai. Sheila gives us the update on her successful baby shower and, finally, we get the complete Lab Rats chip quest 2015 report on Lay's Do Yourself A Flavor Please visit our website for the latest info on both our new book You're The Best: A Celebration of Friendship.   We also have a new Events page.  We'll be adding to it all summer and fall. On today's Satellite Sisters, the Lab Rats Sheila and Monica Dolan go on a Chip Quest.  Monica is determined to participate in the Lays Do Us A Flavor Contest.  She convinced Sheila to get on board to test flavors Gyro, Truffle Fries, Biscuits & Gravy and New York Reuben,  but despite many store visits they could not find the new product.  Not to worry, sisters.  Monica will carry on this week even if it means ordering them from Walmart.com.  Meanwhile, Sheila tries Bikram Yoga for the first time with less-than-ideal results. She has a complete report on that as well as the baby shower she is hosting at her home next weekend.  The workback schedule is being drawn up now.  Now all she needs is a place for guests to actually sit down.  Plus, she crosses town to her new CVS.  Also with mixed results, we'd say. Liz has a celebrity-sighting report from Superba Snack Bar in Venice, CA. Gotta love, JLD.  It was fun to see her and fun to just leave her alone to enjoy her lunch. Food there is superba, by the way.  We recommend it. Then Liz and a friend tried a new place in Santa Monica last night that is part butcher shop/part restaurant. True touch of Portlandia. Very high marks for Belcampo, including the best Beet Cocktail ever.  Yes, people.  Beets and tequila.  Give it a try.  Called Beets By J.  Hahaha.  You may also be interested in trying the camp the restaurant runs at their ranch in Northern California.  Women's Meat Camp.  Yes, people.
