It's the day after Eclipse 2017 and we have a complete report from the totality + the partiality, the mountains and the plains, two wineries in Oregon, one stadium in Carbondale, IL, a parking lot in Dallas TX and a park bench in Pasadena, CA. Thanks to Away Luggage for sponsoring today's Satellite Sisters podcast.  To subscribe to Satellite Sisters on Apple Podcasts, click here.  To subscribe to Satellite Sisters on Stitcher, click here. Camping. A sure sign that the Eclipseolypse was upon us. Monica was doing sunrise yoga and listening to a Portlandia-inspired astronomer dude in Salem, Oregon at Brooks Winery. Jill, friend of the Satellite Sisterhood/former producer on The Oprah Winfrey Show/podcast producer, was in Saluki Stadium in Carbondale, IL after convincing her dubious husband that the totality was the only place to spend her birthday. Julie and Lian file their reports from the partiality. Julie concludes that "much joy was to be had" on her end, while Lian has a beef with some "toddler talk" on hers. Lian also joyfully provides a complete round-up of the eclipse love that all the Satellite Sisters shared with us on the Satellite Sisters Facebook Group.  You must take in all the happy photos there right now! Sisters from coast-to-coast, from the top of Mount Whitney to their own lounge chairs in their driveways. Eclipse 2017 Spectacular: Astronomer Robert Kir...
Eclipse 2017 Spectacular: Astronomer Robert Kirshner Explains All To The Satellite Sisters. Satellite Sisters Liz Dolan, Lian Dolan and Julie Dolan are joined by noted astronomer Dr. Robert Kirshner in a special podcast episode devoted entirely to #Eclipse2017 which will sweep across the United States on August 21. The Satellite Sisters know Kirshner as Cousin Bob, the family astronomer. He is also the Clowes Professor of Science at Harvard University and the Chief Program Officer for Science at the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation in Palo Alto, CA. On this Satellite Sisters Eclipse 2017 special podcast episode, Dr. Kirshner recommends some key resources for everyone interested in enjoying the historic celestial event. The Moore Foundation has distributed eclipse glasses to thousands of public libraries throughout the country. For complete information on a site near you and an information guide, go to starnetlibraries.org. For additional authoritative information on Eclipse 2017, go to Great American Eclipse.  In this entertaining and informative interview from Cambridge, Massachusetts, Kirshner explains what makes the human experience of "the totality" so unique. Liz Dolan will be among the millions of Americans who have positioned themselves in that narrow band for the 100% eclipse. And for those who live in parts of the country where they will view a partial eclipse, including Lian Dolan in Pasadena CA and Julie Dolan in Dallas TX, he has advice for maximum enjoyment + safety. Kirshner also describes what scientists will be able to observe and learn during the historic eclipse. On August 21, he will be at the American Astronomical Society meeting in Sun Valley, Idaho, which is in the path of totally, of course. Robert Kirshner's book The Extravagant Universe: Exploding Stars, Dark Energy and The Accelerating Cosmos is available at amazon.  The Satellite Sisters will host a second Eclipse 2017 on Tuesday August 22 to discuss their experiences. If you wish to post messages about your experiences to be shared on that podcast special, please join the Satellite Sisters Facebook Group. Follow the Satellite Sisters on Twitter and Instagram @SatSisters. Princess Diana, Martha Stewart, Summer Salads, ...
Satellite Sisters podcast is brought to you by Harrys.com and Rover.com. On today's Satellite Sisters podcast, Lian Dolan, Julie Dolan and Liz Dolan announce plans for two special episodes about the Aug. 21 total solar eclipse, share their disappointment with Michael Phelps vs Shark and share their love of a heartbreaking new Princess Diana HBO documentary called Diana Our Mother and a classic episode of Say Yes To The Dress with guest star Martha Stewart. There she is in all of her chilly glory! First up, on August 1, 2017 we will release Eclipseolypse 2017: The Satellite Sisters interview astronomer Robert Kirshner PhD.  Dr. Kirshner is one of the world's leading astrophysicists, the Clowes Professor of Science at Harvard University, the Chief Science Officer at the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation and, perhaps most importantly, our cousin Bobby. Thank goodness we have a family astronomer to help us understand everything we need to know about eclipses before the big event on August 21. Our second Eclipseolypse 2017 Satellite Sisters Special will drop on August 22, the day after Liz and Monica have experienced the totality. Be sure you have subscribed to Satellite Sisters on Apple Podcasts or Stitcher so that you get both of these special episodes. To subscribe to Satellite Sisters on Apple Podcasts, click here.  To subscribe to Satellite Sisters on Stitcher, click here. Lian is outraged that the international governing body of of swimming called FINA changed the name of Synchronized Swimming to Artistic Swimming. We have taken a pledge to never use that name even though they do wear nose clips and makeup. It's an incredibly athletic event. Let the athletes sound like athletes! Lian is still sniffling after viewing HBO's documentary about Princess Diana called XXXX. It features really moving personal interviews with her sons Will and Harry. We miss you, Diana. In Lian's downtime, there's nothing she enjoys more than bingeing on Say Yes To The Dress. This weekend she found the best episode ever. Martha Stewart as special guest in all her chilly Martha-ness. You have to find it and watch. Julie had a great Nana Camp experience crafting with a cool kit from Skullduggery. Good thing she had 10 year old Alice there to explain it to her! Success.  Easy Breezy! It's summer so we are required to talk about summer salads. Lian shares a recipe and her secret ingredient. And Julie has one Tuesday trend about the woman who invented the self-cleaning house. Sounds great until you realize that it's like living inside a dishwasher. Liz has a stalement with a neighbor in the parking garage. Grrrrrrr. Followed by a total fail at Meditation Class. Those two things might be related. Operation Sea Turtle struggles along. He will never lead the Rose Parade, that's for sure.  Hello, LPGA. Just when Lian was totally onboard you go and announce a dress code for the LPGA players that she just cannot support. Save the short. LET THEM WEAR SKORTS! Julie thinks Michael Phelps vs Shark is the equivalent of Roger Federer vs Bear. It's beneath his stature as a great champion. Lian's all for it. Do we need some Floaty-Pants to watch that? Who should run Uber?  Liz does some handicapping of the current candidates and suggests a novel sisters-oriented solution. Lian is in a Masterclass with Aaron Sorkin: You've seen the ads on Facebook for all those famous people teaching classes- Dustin Hoffman on Acting; Hans Zimmer on Music; Usher on Performance. Are they really worth it? Lian says yes. https://www.masterclass.com Julie's Royal Report: The Duchess of Cambridge's wardrobe strategy impresses. Liz's Operation Sea Turtle report: There was a a mutiny at Deep Water Aerobics this Sunday. Plus, Liz buys a new used car and the hardest thing is opening the gas tank. Liz recommends the movie version of the Broadway play Falsettos. It's playing around the country for just a few weeks right now. Find Falsetto shows here.  To access our complete Satellite Sisters show archive, click here. At thirty-eight, Lillian Curtis is content with her life. She enjoys her routine as a producer for a talk show in New York City starring showbiz veteran Vi (“short for vibrant”) Barbour, a spirited senior. Lillian’s relationship with her husband is pleasant if no longer exciting. Most nights she is more than happy to come home to her apartment and crawl into her pajamas. Then she’s hit with a piece of shocking news: Her husband wants a divorce. Blindsided, Lillian takes a leave of absence and moves back to her parents’ home in suburban New Jersey. Nestled in her childhood bedroom, where Duran Duran and Squeeze posters still cover the walls, she finds high school memories a healing salve to her troubles. She hurtles backward into her teen years, driving too fast, digging up mix tapes, and tentatively reconciling with Dawn, a childhood friend she once betrayed. Punctuating her stroll down memory lane is an invitation to the Bethel Memorial High School class of 1988 twenty-year reunion. It just might be Lillian’s chance to reconnect with her long-lost boyfriend, Christian Somers, who is expected to attend. Will it be just like heaven? Lillian discovers, as we all must, the pitfalls of glorifying the glory days, the mortification of failing as a thirtysomething adult, and the impossibility of fully recapturing the past. Don’t You Forget About Me is for anyone who looks back and wonders: What if? See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information. Girls Like Us: Carole King, Carly Simon, Joni M...
Women we love, the songs they wrote and the men they slept with. On this episode of Satellite Sisters podcast from July 2, 2008, Liz, Sheila and Monica interview Sheila Weller about her New York Times Times Bestseller "Girls Like Us: Carole King, Joni Mitchell, Carly Simon and the Journey of a Generation." On April 6, 1971, Carly Simon was about to take the stage at The Troubadour in Los Angeles. In the audience, James Taylor with his girlfriend Joni Mitchell. And back in NYC in the famed Brill Building, Carole King was already so famous as a songwriter that she was the person the Beatles asked to meet on their first trip to America. Meanwhile, in Fairfield CT, Monica, Sheila and Liz were in the 6th, 7th and 8th grades learning to love these voices of a generation. And love the men they loved. We are talking to you, James Taylor.  Please fill out our 2017 Listener Survey: https://survey.libsyn.com/satellitesisters Here's  from amazon about Girls Like Us:  "A groundbreaking and irresistible biography of three of America’s most important musical artists—Carole King, Joni Mitchell, and Carly Simon—charts their lives as women at a magical moment in time. Carole King, Joni Mitchell, and Carly Simon remain among the most enduring and important women in popular music. Each woman is distinct. Carole King is the product of outer-borough, middle-class New York City; Joni Mitchell is a granddaughter of Canadian farmers; and Carly Simon is a child of the Manhattan intellectual upper crust. They collectively represent, in their lives and their songs, a great swath of American girls who came of age in the late 1960s. Their stories trace the arc of the now mythic sixties generation—female version—but in a bracingly specific and deeply recalled way, far from cliché. The history of the women of that generation has never been written—until now, through their resonant lives and emblematic songs. Girls Like Us is an epic treatment of midcentury women who dared to break tradition and become what none had been before them—confessors in song, rock superstars, and adventurers of heart and soul."
