On today's podcast, Liz Dolan, Lian Dolan and Julie Dolan tackle the secret drug-fueled life of a USC med school dean, Julie's annual Nana Camp strategy, Lian's personal growth since college and Liz's suggestions for the new CEO of Uber. Plus Lian vs LPGA dress code, Michael Phelps vs Shark, Royal Report and Liz's new used car. Thanks to all of our sponsors including Honest Tea and Harry's. Go here for links to all of our sponsors. First up, how fast are you listening to us? Julie says speed listening to podcasts is the latest thing. Scandal in Lian's hometown of Pasadena. You must read this L A Times tale of a USC med school dean, his years of drug fueled parties and the meth overdose in the Hotel Constance that brought this to light. He will never lead the Rose Parade, that's for sure.  Hello, LPGA. Just when Lian was totally onboard you go and announce a dress code for the LPGA players that she just cannot support. Save the short. LET THEM WEAR SKORTS! Julie thinks Michael Phelps vs Shark is the equivalent of Roger Federer vs Bear. It's beneath his stature as a great champion. Lian's all for it. Do we need some Floaty-Pants to watch that? Who should run Uber?  Liz does some handicapping of the current candidates and suggests a novel sisters-oriented solution. Lian is in a Masterclass with Aaron Sorkin: You've seen the ads on Facebook for all those famous people teaching classes- Dustin Hoffman on Acting; Hans Zimmer on Music; Usher on Performance. Are they really worth it? Lian says yes. https://www.masterclass.com Julie's Royal Report: The Duchess of Cambridge's wardrobe strategy impresses. Liz's Operation Sea Turtle report: There was a a mutiny at Deep Water Aerobics this Sunday. Plus, Liz buys a new used car and the hardest thing is opening the gas tank. Liz recommends the movie version of the Broadway play Falsettos. It's playing around the country for just a few weeks right now. Find Falsetto shows here.  To access our complete Satellite Sisters show archive, click here. At thirty-eight, Lillian Curtis is content with her life. She enjoys her routine as a producer for a talk show in New York City starring showbiz veteran Vi (“short for vibrant”) Barbour, a spirited senior. Lillian’s relationship with her husband is pleasant if no longer exciting. Most nights she is more than happy to come home to her apartment and crawl into her pajamas. Then she’s hit with a piece of shocking news: Her husband wants a divorce. Blindsided, Lillian takes a leave of absence and moves back to her parents’ home in suburban New Jersey. Nestled in her childhood bedroom, where Duran Duran and Squeeze posters still cover the walls, she finds high school memories a healing salve to her troubles. She hurtles backward into her teen years, driving too fast, digging up mix tapes, and tentatively reconciling with Dawn, a childhood friend she once betrayed. Punctuating her stroll down memory lane is an invitation to the Bethel Memorial High School class of 1988 twenty-year reunion. It just might be Lillian’s chance to reconnect with her long-lost boyfriend, Christian Somers, who is expected to attend. Will it be just like heaven? Lillian discovers, as we all must, the pitfalls of glorifying the glory days, the mortification of failing as a thirtysomething adult, and the impossibility of fully recapturing the past. Don’t You Forget About Me is for anyone who looks back and wonders: What if? See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information. Girls Like Us: Carole King, Carly Simon, Joni M...
Women we love, the songs they wrote and the men they slept with. On this episode of Satellite Sisters podcast from July 2, 2008, Liz, Sheila and Monica interview Sheila Weller about her New York Times Times Bestseller "Girls Like Us: Carole King, Joni Mitchell, Carly Simon and the Journey of a Generation." On April 6, 1971, Carly Simon was about to take the stage at The Troubadour in Los Angeles. In the audience, James Taylor with his girlfriend Joni Mitchell. And back in NYC in the famed Brill Building, Carole King was already so famous as a songwriter that she was the person the Beatles asked to meet on their first trip to America. Meanwhile, in Fairfield CT, Monica, Sheila and Liz were in the 6th, 7th and 8th grades learning to love these voices of a generation. And love the men they loved. We are talking to you, James Taylor.  Please fill out our 2017 Listener Survey: https://survey.libsyn.com/satellitesisters Here's  from amazon about Girls Like Us:  "A groundbreaking and irresistible biography of three of America’s most important musical artists—Carole King, Joni Mitchell, and Carly Simon—charts their lives as women at a magical moment in time. Carole King, Joni Mitchell, and Carly Simon remain among the most enduring and important women in popular music. Each woman is distinct. Carole King is the product of outer-borough, middle-class New York City; Joni Mitchell is a granddaughter of Canadian farmers; and Carly Simon is a child of the Manhattan intellectual upper crust. They collectively represent, in their lives and their songs, a great swath of American girls who came of age in the late 1960s. Their stories trace the arc of the now mythic sixties generation—female version—but in a bracingly specific and deeply recalled way, far from cliché. The history of the women of that generation has never been written—until now, through their resonant lives and emblematic songs. Girls Like Us is an epic treatment of midcentury women who dared to break tradition and become what none had been before them—confessors in song, rock superstars, and adventurers of heart and soul."
