The Associate Immigrant XI's with Nishadh Rego

The common refrain from many cricket fans is that that associate teams are largely just Indian or Pakistani second XI’s. But in truth, modern sport is much more complicated than that. So this week we brought on Nishadh Rego from Emerging Cricket to talk about immigration in cricket, throughout history, and how it has changed and built cricket nations. We talk Afghans in Pakistan, Afghans in Germany, Oman and early Australia and South Africa, Ranji, the Thai Women’s team and how an Italian footballer had a poster of Allan Border on his bedroom wall.

-

To support the podcast please go to our Patreon page. https://www.patreon.com/user?u=32090121.

If you like this podcast, you may like the YouTube page https://www.youtube.com/jarrodkimberyt.

You can find Nishadh Rego on Twitter at https://twitter.com/ntrego88.

His piece on this issue can be found here: [The expat native binary in Associate cricket] (https://emergingcricket.com/opinion/the-expat-native-binary-in-associate-cricket/)

This podcast is edited, mixed and produced by Nick McCorriston, he's at https://www.nickamc.com and https://www.twitter.com/nickamc.

The theme tune is by Red Crickets https://freemusicarchive.org/music/Red_Crickets/Red_Crickets.

Aasif Karim- The Mombasa Lion Slayer

This episode of Red Inker is on one of cricket’s most remarkable spells by the man who bowled it, Aasif Karim. In 2003 I was backpacking around the World Cup, and we headed to Durban for the Kenya vs Australia match. We really didn’t expect much, as good as Kenya had been in the tournament, no one expected them to put up such of a fight against Australia. Brett Lee started with a hat-trick, Kenya limped to a sub-par total, and then Adam Gilchrist hit Kenya’s best bowlers out of Kingsmead. The match was heading for an obvious result when what looked like a middle-aged insurance broker came on to bowl. And what followed was extraordinary, as the world’s best team were stopped dead in their tracks by a man who had played a lifetime already, and who no one had noticed.

-

To support the podcast please go to our Patreon page. https://www.patreon.com/user?u=32090121.

If you like this podcast, you may like the YouTube page https://www.youtube.com/jarrodkimberyt.

You can find Aasif Karim on Twitter at https://www.twitter.com/AasifKarim.

My piece on Aasif is here: [The Master Of Mombasa| The Cricket Monthly] (https://www.thecricketmonthly.com/story/900135/the-master-of-mombasa)

This podcast is edited, mixed and produced by Nick McCorriston, he's at https://www.nickamc.com and https://www.twitter.com/nickamc.

The theme tune is by Red Crickets https://freemusicarchive.org/music/Red_Crickets/Red_Crickets.

This episode of Red Inker is where I get in a cricket podcast legend Subash Jayaraman to interview me. He wanted to talk about my love of Pankaj Singh, the Indian seamer. This is more than just Pankaj though, it’s about how we obsess over lovable losers. They guys who didn’t quite make it, they guys who did but left quick, the hard luck stories and grinders. We talk about other guys like Jamie Siddons, Mark Ramprakash, S Badrinath and Bryce McGain. Comebacks with Geoff Lemon

This episode of Red Inker we talk about the incredible English summer of 2019, when Steve Smith and Ben Stokes erased all previous faux-pas by being really good at cricket. So I got in someone who wrote a book called The Comeback Summer about the entire thing, Geoff Lemon. We look at what fans and media think, how these stories and narratives are constructed. Should Warner have scored more runs in the Ashes for extra love? Would Cameron Bancroft be better at redemption if he was better at cricket? Has being really good at the sport he was really good at shown us something about the moral character of Ben Stokes? Mark Coles: The Ice Cream Coach

This is a special episode of Red Inker. It touches on some deep stuff about alcoholism, depression and suicide, but I think it’s an incredible story and one that will make you feel a little better about the world in the end. This chat covers the life of Mark Coles, growing up as a child of cricket, become a coach, struggling with life, and then one day on a whim, contacting Mickey Arthur and offering to coach the Pakistan women’s team. It’s dark at times, but it’s also beautiful and like all the best things in life, it ends in ice cream.

-

To support the podcast please go to our Patreon page. https://www.patreon.com/user?u=32090121.

If you like this podcast, you may like the YouTube page https://www.youtube.com/jarrodkimberyt.

You can find Jehan’s article on Mark here [Cricket coach Mark Coles moved to Pakistan for a job that paid nothing - it changed his life] (https://stuff.co.nz/sport/cricket/300073581/cricket-coach-mark-coles-moved-to-pakistan-for-a-job-that-paid-nothing—it-changed-his-life)

Here is a link to suicide crisis lines around the world [List of suicide crisis lines] (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_suicide_crisis_lines)

This podcast is edited, mixed and produced by Nick McCorriston, he's at https://www.nickamc.comand https://www.twitter.com/nickamc.

The theme tune is by Red Crickets https://freemusicarchive.org/music/Red_Crickets/Red_Crickets.

Channel 9 with Geoff Lemon

Channel 9 was the first famous cricket broadcast. Manners is often annoyed by people saying that cricket hasn’t changed, and we go through the changes to cricket over the years. How many days do Test matches go for, how many players are in a team, the number or balls in an over, what the pitch is made of.
