Dad Tunes: Seal
If you walked into a dance club in 1991, you may have heard Seal's first big single "Killer": the acid house crossover hit with DJ and producer Adamski. And if you sat through the Batman Forever credits in 1995, you heard a completely different sound with "Kiss From A Rose". Between his first two records (both self-titled), the number of musicians that sat in the studio for these recordings with Seal is staggering, and his sound and style is just as varied and wide-ranging. Tracklist Seal - Kiss From a Rose Seal - The Beginning Seal - Bring It On Seal - Dream in Metaphors Seal - Fast Changes Mk.gee - dimeback Benedek - On My Way LL Burns - Get Me Back in the Game This show is part of the Pantheon Podcast network.

Dad Tunes: Gloria Estefan
On this episode we look at one of the groups that stood out amongst the trove of hard rock, classical, and jazz that our father exposed us to growing up: Gloria Estefan and The Miami Sound Machine. It wasn't until their 8th studio album, Eyes of Innocence, that the group started making music aimed at the American market. Their first hit single came in 1985 with their crossover signature track "Conga", which peaked at #10 on the Billboard Hot 100 list. We let the rhythm get us as we listen to a couple tracks from Primitive and Let It Loose and discuss how the group so successfully blended the trends of 80s pop with their tropical, latin-infused sound. Tracklist: Gloria Estefan - Rhythm Is Gonna Get You (intro) Gloria Estefan - Movies The Power Station - Some Like It Hot Gloria Estefan - Let It Loose Gloria Estefan - 1-2-3 Equip - Druids (Encounter) R.A.P. Dad Tunes: Dire Straits (with guest Tyler Darling)
In our 4th installment of Dad Tunes, we chat about Dire Straits' self-titled debut record with help from our good friend (and possibly long-lost triplet) Tyler Darling - host of I Turn My Podcast On. We dig into J.J. Cale's blues and rockabilly-infused Tulsa sound that was a huge influence on Mark Knopfler's unique guitar tone and vocal style that made Dire Straits such a unique entry into the rock landscape of the late 70s. Dad Tunes: Gino Vannelli
In our continued exploration of the music our father listened to, we listen to a the one-and-only Gino Vannelli. Combining jazz and pop with lyrics that read like a romance novel, at first glance Gino was your classic crooner. The tight pants and chest hair certainly made his album art leap off the shelves to anyone who may be interested at such a glorious sight. But visual stimuli aside - the music paints it's own picture. We listen to a track off his 1975 record Storm at Sunup and his 1978 record Brother to Brother. Dad Tunes: Van Halen
Everyone knows Van Halen: the finger-tapping, spandex-wearing, high-kicking glam metal band from the 80s that took the world by storm with some of the biggest hits in rock history. On this episode, we hope to share a few tracks that you may have overlooked if you tuned in to Halen for just the songs you heard on the radio (or saw on MTV for that matter). We also ask the age-old question of whether Van Halen truly is a metal band, and discuss the time we saw them in 2008 where we ultimately conclude that you really don't have to wear the spandex anymore David. Dad Tunes: The Cars - Self-Titled
To kick off our batch of episodes devoted to all the music our dad listened to when we were growing up, we talk to the man himself about his time as a radio DJ in the 70s and 80s. And on top of that, we listen to some music off The Cars debut record and talk bout how perfectly they merged new wave, punk, and synth rock. We even dig up a tune from Orr and Ocasek's prior folk-rock Crosby, Stills, and Nash-esque band, Milkwood. "Record Store Zombie" - A Conversation With Mar...
We end our look back at the music of our youth by talking with the man that sold us those records: the one and only Mark Burke, current owner of Mad World Records in Denton, TX. With nearly 20 years experience owning and operating record shops (and roughly 7 years managing them before that), Mark gives us an inside look at what it takes to run a record store. We also chat about his years in the Denton punk scene where he organized house shows for acts like At the Drive-In, Braid, and Jimmy Eat World. Tracklist Miserable - Damned To Love You Ritual (feat. Flickerstick: How the VH1 Reality Champs Spawne...
To wrap-up our batch of episodes devoted to the albums of our youth, we go back to the origin and talk about one of the first bands we truly connected with. If you caught VH1's reality show Bands On The Run back in 2001, you may remember the crowned champions, Flickerstick. Their drunken antics and overall attitude toward the hoops they were asked to jump through helped them gain a devoted fanbase. That combined with the energy and passion of their live performances gave them the edge they needed to win the contest, and we were there for every second of it. Today we discuss their debut record, Welcoming Home The Astronauts, and how the power of an amazing live performance had such a lasting impact on budding music-lovers who are still talking about it 20 years later. Garage Rock Evolved: Phantom Planet's Self-Titl...
Phantom Planet was once most notably known as the group that sings that song from The O.C. (you know, the one that goes "California, here we come!"). But on their 2004 self-titled record, they traded in those melodic, poppy song structures for a more frenetic, fuzz-driven garage sound. We argue in this episode that this is perhaps one of the greatest garage rock records to come out of the early 2000s (certainly one of the most overlooked and under-appreciated), with its impassioned vocal performances, pummeling drums and bass, and guitar riffs that could punch through a wall. Ethan Durelle - White Knuckles On Turned Wheels...
If you were a teenager in the 2000s and grew up near Dallas, TX, you probably went to your fair share of live music in Deep Ellum like we did. On this week's episode, we chat with the former General Manager and part owner of The Door and The Prophet Bar, Joel Fruth. He's got some first hand stories to share about the one and only Ethan Durelle, the underrated and extremely talented post-punk indie outfit from Waco, TX. Their debut record, White Knuckles On Turned Wheels, and the sound they cultivated can best be described, as Joel puts it: "Radiohead and Death Cab for Cutie were married, and then Death Cab divorced Radiohead and married Incubus." What more could possibly be said beyond that? Mae: Destination: Beautiful
As we've covered heavily over the past few weeks, emo bands were a dime a dozen in the early aughts. Mae's debut record, Destination: Beautiful, was the exception to the rule. Dave Elkin's beautiful vocals layered over textures of acoustic guitar and lush piano make this record beautifully varied through its 11 tracks, with lyrics that flirt with emo cliches yet feel refreshing and sincere. If you missed it the first time around, Destination: Beautiful is a must-listen for fans of emo music from this era. mewithoutYou - [A→B] Life: When Poetry and Post...
mewithoutYou's debut record [A→B] Life defies the genre labels one might be eager to place on it. Singer Aaron Weiss' poetic lyricism and spoken word-style vocals can sometimes feel emo, but his philosophical themes go so much deeper than emo's hallmarks of self-loathing and insecurity. And the impassioned screams and neurotic mumbling sprinkled so effectively throughout his vocal performances leave the listener just as emotionally gutted as the words Weiss is punctuating. Musically the rest of the band weave punk, post-hardcore, and grunge throughout the record in such a way that makes their sound just as varied and sporadic as the vocal performances. For fans of all of the above: this record is certainly one to put on and fully engage with. mewithoutYou - Bullet To Binary mewithoutYou - The Ghost mewithoutYou - Everything Was Beautiful And Nothing Hurt mewithoutYou - (A) mewithoutYou - Gentlemen Narrow Head - Night Tryst Smokey Robinson - Baby That's Backatcha mewithoutYou - Wolf Am I ( And Shadow) This show is part of the Pantheon Podcast networ,

Emery: The Weak's End
Continuing our exploration of the music from our youth, we crank the angst to 10 and go full emo with a listen to Emery's debut album, The Weak's End. While the record leans more toward the poppy, melodic side of the emo spectrum, the sporadic scream and aggressive attack of the 3 guitar players pack an effective punch when utilized. And while some would say that side of this record is under-utilized, we argue that it is what makes the record so effective: the emphasis is on the melody and the clean, non-whiney vocal delivery that is perfectly accentuated by the well-placed screams that are typically associated with emo music. So comb your bangs over your left eye, paint your fingernails black and join us for a trip down Angst Avenue. After the dissolution of Chicago-based Braid, Bob Nanna and Todd Bell took their post-hardcore emo sound and added some melody and pop to it. The result was Hey Mercedes - but the change in sound was likely thanks to Vagrant records. While there are a couple of stand-out tunes on their debut Everynight Fire Works, we conclude along with many of the critics that this album is largely forgettable. By the time 2002 came around, "emo" had gone mainstream. Bands like Jimmy Eat World and Dashboard Confessional had made it to MTV, and paved the way for emo pop's continued success throughout the decade. Having just signed to emo kingmakers Vagrant records, Hot Rod Circuit's 2002 release Sorry About Tomorrow is the perfect representation of what defined that sound. And for the hosts of No Filler, this album represents a defining summer in our youth. For our Sidetrack this week we dive into Box Car Racer, the shortly lived side project of Blink 182's Tom Delonge. During recording sessions of Blink's second studio album, "Take Off Your Pants And Jacket", Delonge began experimenting with different guitar stylings with an acoustic in hand. Coupled with an increasingly grim day-to-day life while recovering from a back injury, Delonge also began writing songs with darker and darker lyrics. With the help of Travis Barker behind the kit, Box Car Racer gave Delonge an outlet to express the darker side of his songwriting. We kick off our batch of episodes devoted to our awkward teenage years with a look at a band that sings about boners and dysentery: the one and only Blink-182 and their 1999 record Enema of the State. And while the juvenile lyrics, addictive melodies and fast-tempos certainly appealed to a younger crowd, it was perhaps their music videos that catapulted Mark, Tom, and Travis into the mainstream stratosphere. Whether it was streaking through the streets of L.A. in or poking fun at the boy bands that shared the TRL spotlight, the trio was a pretty consistent fixture on MTV's Total Request Live, and solidified Blink-182 as the adolescent kings of pop-punk rock. No Doubt: The Beacon Street Collection
Before finding global success with 1995's Tragic Kingdom, ska punk darlings No Doubt were going nowhere fast after signing a record deal at Interscope Records. After a long weekend recording, The Beacon Street Collection was born. Sidetrack: Temple of the Dog
Out of tragedy came a collaboration between two of Seattle's most legendary acts. Lead singer of Mother Love Bone Andrew Wood passed away from a heroin overdose in 1990. His former roommate was none other than Chris Cornell, who wrote a couple of songs as a tribute to his late while touring Europe with Soundgarden. Cornell reached out to former Mother Love Bone bandmates Jeff Ament and Stone Gossard to make a record out of it, who had just recently invited Eddie Vedder to rehearse for their newly formed band Pearl Jam. The result was Temple of the Dog, a snapshot of two massively successful rock bands months before both hit mainstream success. Pearl Jam - Ten
Thirty years later and rock fans are still at odds about what qualifies as "grunge" music. But despite Cobain's commentary on the band's underground cred (and their lack of sincerity with the flannel), few would argue Pearl Jam's grunge status and impact on the Seattle scene at the birth of the movement. In 1991, the year that grunge broke, Pearl Jam released their debut Ten just a month before Nevermind. With Mother Love Bone and Green River alumni Jeff Ament and Stone Gossard, Eddie Vedder's emotional vocal delivery made the album's dark themes of suicide, depression, and violence that much more impactful and powerful. Stone Temple Pilots - Purple
Stone Temple Pilots saw huge success with their testosterone-filled debut album Core, but struggled to gain any love from the Cobain acolytes who insisted they weren't truly grunge (they were from San Diego after all). After a stint of touring and loads of in-fighting, the band returned to the studio to record their second record. Less than one month later, the band emerged with a sound that was uniquely theirs, incorporating elements of psychedelic, country, and blues-rock with the grunge flavor from Core.
