An Uneven Wilderness: Unwound's Repetition
We're back from vacation with a short and sweet episode on the post-hardcore noise rock stylings of Unwound, a band that created, as Fred Thomas of AllMusic once said, "some of the more influential and lasting work of their era, with their cloudy moods and explosively tense group dynamics culminating in some truly transcendent albums." On this episode, we're diving into our favorite album from the group, 1996's Repetition. Rewind: Jimmy Eat World - Clarity
Another rewind episode? What are you guys on vacation or something? Yes. Yes we are. Now considered a touchstone record of the emo genre, we take a look at Jimmy Eat World's 1999 classic Clarity, and how the sound they were perfecting ushered us into the third wave of emo music. Before that we go all the way back to the spring of 1985 in Washington D.C. to explore the origins of emo, and discuss how difficult the genre is to define. F*cking Phil: Drop Nineteens' Delaware
For those just getting into the shoegaze genre, there are a handful of albums that are must-listens. Of course at the top sits My Bloody Valentine's "Loveless", Slowdive's "Souvlaki", and Ride's "Nowhere". But while there are must-listen albums, perhaps more important are the must-listen songs. And for many, Drop Nineteen's Delaware features one of shoegaze's greatest moments: the ethereal, slow-build simmer of "Kick The Tragedy", a near 9 minute drone with an unexpected sucker punch two-thirds of the way through that left a lasting impression on new and old fans of the genre and cemented the band as one of shoegaze's greatest acts. Heavy, Spacey, Mesmerizing: Hum's Downward Is H...
After 90s alt-rockers Hum gained a small amount of fame with their 1995 single "Stars", the band headed back to the studio to make their next record. By the time the Downward Is Heavenward was released in 1998, perhaps rock was ready for something else. The record garnered little attention, and the band dissolved, not putting out another record for another 22 years! But the record lived on, and it's masterful blend of space rock, grunge, post-hardcore, and a touch of emo sensibilities has lead many to consider it one of the best alt rock records of the 90s. Jangly, Murky, Mysterious: How R.E.M's Murmur U...
We chat about R.E.M's debut record, Murmur and try to imagine what it was like to hear this style of rock for the first time in 1983. Hearing it now, R.E.M's mix of jangly 60s pop and folk rock with garage rock attitude sounds so normal and common after the band's influence shaping the sound of countless rockers for nearly four decades. But at the time, critics knew it was special. So much so that Rolling Stone put it at its best album of the year, beating out Michael Jackson's Thriller, Police's Synchronicity, and U2's War, to name a few. The next iteration of rock was here, and R.E.M. was the flagbearer.

And We Were So Small: The Music of Polaris
With Miracle Legion's future in limbo after legal troubles with their label at the time, Mark Mulcahy came up with a new name for the group (and alter egos for each band member) when they were approached by Will McRobb to write songs and appear in his upcoming Nickelodeon project. The show was of course The Adventures of Pete and Pete. Not only did they appear in the opening credits and write the theme song for the show, Polaris also played a heavy role in an episode all about discovering your favorite song at a young age. We talk about what an amazing television network Nickelodeon was and hour fortunate we feel to grow up in the 90s, and how Polaris and the music of Pete and Pete played a big role in shaping our taste in music.Tracklist:Hey SandySaturnineEverywhere (as featured in S1E1 "King of the Road")Summerbaby (as featured in S1E13 "Hard Day's Pete")RecentlyThis show is part of the Pantheon Podcast network.

The World Was So Big: The Music of Miracle Legion
If you were in college in the early 80s and tuned in to your campus radio station, you probably heard a fair amount of R.E.M., maybe some Pixies, or The Smiths even. But you may have heard a lesser known group: Miracle Legion. With similar jangle pop melodies and vocal stylings as Peter Buck and Michael Stipe, the band was often compared to their R.E.M. counterparts. But what made Miracle Legion different is perhaps what kept them from reaching superstardom: the lyrical themes of singer Mark Mulcahy were less cryptic and poetic and more nostalgic and direct. They dealt with childhood memories we could all relate to. Which is why it's no surprise that the creator of the Nickelodeon cult classic TV show The Adventures of Pete and Pete approached Mark to write songs for his show about growing up in Suburbia (more on that next week). Join us as we listen to several tracks spanning Miracle Legion's short but impactful career leading up to the early 90s when they transformed into the band we knew and loved as kids: the one and only Polaris.

Rewind: REM - Life's Rich Pageant
Travis is out of town this week, so we're dropping a Rewind episode on you from our first year podcasting back in 2018, where we covered REM's 4th studio album "Life's Rich Pageant". If you were to plot R.E.M's path from underground buzz to household name, their fourth studio album Life's Rich Pageant was the turning point. Coming out of a miserable recording experience in London with Fables of the Reconstruction in 1985, the band heads back to the states and are determined to inject some energy and creativity back into their music. The result is the loud, invigorating, and often spontaneous fourth album. Tracklist: What If We Give It Away?
