Manny Machado is the best third baseman in baseball and he is going to be looking to be paid like it at the end of 2023 if he opts out of the remaining five years left on the contract he signed back in 2019 with the San Diego Padres. Us fans hope he doesn’t get to free agency but what will Peter Seidler have to pay Machado for that not to happen? Plus, there’s a positive clue out on social media involving Machado that should give fans faith that the Padres will ultimately get a deal done.

New San Diego Padres shortstop Xander Bogaerts won the World Series with the Boston Red Sox in 2018 against the Los Angeles Dodgers. He had some pretty good talent around him—Mookie Betts, Rafael Devers and J.D. Martinez just to name a few—but he might have more talent around him this season in the brown and gold. We won’t know if that’s the case until the games are played but let’s go through the projections!

Talking Friars Ep. 309: 5 Remaining Padres Outf...
The San Diego Padres have had a successful offseason...so far. They’ve added to the pitching staff, found someone who can be this year’s version of Brandon Drury or Wil Myers at a cheaper price and acquired some depth at the catching position. With that said, they still need to go get another starting caliber outfielder who can play at least until Fernando Tatis Jr. returns. Who could that be? Let’s go over five players the Padres should target in free agency!

Happy Wednesday! Matt Carpenter was introduced via zoom yesterday and had some great things to say about the San Diego Padres organization. Is Trent Grisham on the trade block? It seems like San Diego is certainly open to dealing him. Plus, Carlos Correa isn’t going to the NL West after all! But is that actually might be worse for the Padres? The Padres needed to add a bat who could play multiple positions and that’s what they’ve done! Matt Carpenter may have been seeing his career come to end in 2021 but he revamped his swing and came back in 2022 as one of the hottest hitters on the planet for the Yankees. Can he have the same impact in San Diego as he did in New York? Ben Fadden gives his reaction to the move in this episode of Talking Friars!

The Padres are reportedly signing Seth Lugo, who has been one of the Mets top relievers for the last few seasons. The right-hander didn’t allow a run in the postseason and owned a 3.60 ERA in 2022. Ben Fadden gives his reaction to the move in this episode of Talking Friars!

Jon Heyman reported yesterday that the San Diego Padres “anticipate” Manny Machado to exercise his opt-out after the 2023 season. Plus, Ken Rosenthal reported today that Justin Turner is a possibility at DH. Would that be a smart move?

Jim Callis said this morning “don’t be shocked” if the Atlanta Braves trade Max Fried this winter. We know the San Diego Padres need another big starter so could a trade happen between the two clubs? We knew the San Diego Padres were interested in adding Kodai Senga to the starting rotation but that won’t be happening, as he’s headed to the New York Mets. If it was Opening Day, the rotation would include Yu Darvish, Blake Snell, Joe Musgrove, Nick Martinez and Julio Teheran. The good news though is it’s not Opening Day. Who are the remaining targets for A.J. Preller in the starting pitching market to round out the rotation?

Hello from the Winter Meetings! We know the San Diego Padres offered Trea Turner way more than $300 million so the conversation today in San Diego has been about if A.J. Preller will use that money on one of the other big name free agents. Ben Fadden asked him about San Diego’s interest in Aaron Judge and he didn’t say they weren’t interested. Plus, there’s a report out that the Padres aren’t interested in the shortstop market any longer now that Turner is off the board. Should we really believe that? Ken Rosenthal came out with an interesting report last night detailing what the San Diego Padres are up to the week before the winter meetings begin.
