Mark and John Cronin - John's Crazy Socks

John and Mark X. Cronin are the father-son team that founded John’s Crazy Socks. John is an entrepreneur who just happens to have Down syndrome. You may know them for being named EY Entrepreneurs of the Year or testifying before Congress or speaking at the UN. You may know them because John became “Sock Buddies” with President George H.W. Bush. Or you may know them for having grown a bootstrapped start-up into a multi-million dollar social enterprise. John’s Crazy Socks is an internationally recognized social enterprise with a mission to spread happiness and show what people with differing abilities can do. Their mission infuses all aspects of their business. More than half of their employees have differing ability. Their Giving Back Program starts with a 5 percent pledge of profits to the Special Olympics and has raised over $450,000 for their charity partners. They have attracted over 29,000 online five-star reviews. John’s Crazy Socks has over 240,000 Facebook followers and 55,000 Instagram followers. You will love their socks, but the socks are just the physical manifestation of the happiness they share.

https://johnscrazysocks.com/

https://youtu.be/w27sgTB02uc

--- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/richard-lamonica/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/richard-lamonica/support

Eric Hohman - USAF Veteran, Candidate for TX Co...

Prior to running for Congress, Eric Hohman served 15 years in the United States Air Force. Starting at the age of 20, Eric became a military police officer as a Security Forces Airman. While serving as a Patrolman at Edwards Air Force Base, Eric worked in emergency management and operations.

After his first re-enlistment, Senior Airman Hohman was certified as a Military Investigator, collecting crime scene evidence and processing it. That’s when he joined the United States Air Force police SWAT team called “EST” (Emergency Services Team).

While on the Emergency Services Team, Staff Sergeant Hohman was involved in operations across Texas and the south. His team would do everything from working with Secret Service agents in San Antonio to protect Air Force One, to Hurricane Katrina operations out of Kelly Air Force Base.

During Katrina, there were emergency military evacuations into San Antonio, where refugees and billions of dollars of military assets from the southern United States would be re-located to. Aside from keeping the peace for the evacuees, many of the weapon systems relocated to San Antonio were critical to the United States, and required the protection of Staff Sergeant Hohman, and his Emergency Services Team.

Eric left the United States Air Force in September 2013, after serving his country for 15 years. After killing terrorists in Afghanistan, Eric came home to Texas where he grew up. He began working as a policy analyst for the Texas Senate during the 84th legislative session while going to school to earn his MBA, and then on to the corporate security world. He would finally end up working for the Texas Health and Human Services Department, assisting Veterans across the state.

In 2020, Eric founded the “First There Foundation” after losing one of his teammates to suicide. The Foundation aids all Combat Controllers in their time of need and sheds light on the contributions the men of Combat Control have given to this great country.

https://erichohman.com/

https://youtu.be/j4OODjiDxhY
--- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/richard-lamonica/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/richard-lamonica/support

Steve Edwards - CEO Premier Virtual, US Army Ve...

Growing up in Chippewa Falls, Wisconsin, Steve knew he wanted to join the Army after he graduated from high school. “I wanted to jump out of airplanes, so I was in the 82nd Airborne Division in Fort Bragg.” he says. After serving 4 years in the Army and 2 in the Florida National Guard, he decided to move on. “I realized the military was great, but financially, it just wasn’t what I was looking for in life.”

In 1999, he and some buddies from the 82nd Airborne headed down to Boca Raton to attend Florida Atlantic University, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in sociology.

After stints in the mortgage industry and B2B sales, he got into the job fair industry, traveling across the Southeast and Southwest to conduct events. Within a few years, though, Edwards noticed a slowdown in business. “Everybody was working, they couldn’t come to job fairs and turnout was low.” He recalls, or they were opting to apply for jobs online instead. “It was affecting my pocketbook”.

Looking for a better way to connect employers to job candidates, Edwards seized on the concept of virtual job fairs. “People don’t have to travel,” I said, “This is going to be the future,” he recalls.

Steve bootstrapped Premier Virtual with personal savings to launch the business. Once he got the business off the ground he knew he had an idea he could monetize. He was in several mentoring programs along the way as he knew he had a great idea and could sell it but didn’t know everything. He was involved with the VMT, FAU Tech Runway and the FAU Veterans Entrepreneurship Program which is sponsored by Veterans Florida. At the end of the program they conduct a pitch competition for the Entrepreneurs and their business ideas and the winner from each school goes on the represent their school at the State competition. Steve represented FAU and then won the Statewide competition as well. This program, and the early pitch competitions he won, although not significant amounts, were still welcomed since he was self-funding the business.

In 2019, his startup began building a software platform for virtual job fairs. It launched last March, just as COVID-19 arrived – a bit of serendipity that catapulted Premier Virtual to almost instant success. “We went from nobody knowing who we were to being ranked as one of the top virtual platforms out there,” says Steve.

During its first 10 months, the Premier Virtual platform has powered over 2,500 virtual hiring events which has helped more than 25,000 companies connect with over 250,000 job seekers. The company has grown from 3 employees to more than 20 and earned prestigious awards including 2021 Best Companies to Work for in Florida. Approximately 200 workforce development boards across the country, including CareerSource Florida, which oversees 24 regional partners statewide, have chosen their platform for virtual hiring events. Premier Virtual also has licensing agreements with The Air Force, Army, and several National Guard units.

Steve says individual companies, colleges, and other organizations are quickly coming on board and that they would have never participated in job fairs if it weren’t for virtual, and he’s bullish on the company’s future. “Covid-19 got our name out there, but now people have embraced the technology and how much more efficient it is. We’ve just begun to scratch the surface of what virtual hiring events will do for employers and job-seekers alike.”

https://premiervirtual.com/

https://www.linkedin.com/in/stevenedwards23/

https://www.facebook.com/premiervirtual/

https://www.instagram.com/premiervirtual/

https://twitter.com/premiervirtual9

https://youtu.be/WhYvM5n9YMk
--- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/richard-lamonica/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/richard-lamonica/support

Victoria Wieck - Author, Podcast Host and more

Victoria grew up in a sleepy coastal village in South Korea, surrounded by abundant natural beauty. One of her favorite activities was to watch the stunning sunset from her home, wondering what lay beyond the horizon. She would ask her mother endless questions about the world outside of her small town. Her mother read her stories and taught her how to read, but her curiosity knew no bounds. In school, she excelled in reading, writing, and art.

After graduate school, she was offered several jobs in New York but took a marketing job at a jewelry manufacturing company in Los Angeles to stay closer to her family. Much to her surprise, she ended up using her artistic talents a lot more than she ever imagined. Believing that there was a market for high-quality, stylish jewelry at affordable prices, she formed her own company in 1989 on a shoestring budget. Over the next three decades, her jewelry career allowed her to travel to many places she’d only read about ever since she was a young girl. Victoria’s jewelry designs are inspired by her extensive travels, soaking in history, cultures, and architecture. Today, she is a successful jewelry designer with her own TV show on Shop HQ, connecting with millions of viewers regularly.

When she’s not on TV with her latest collections, she’s either writing or reading. Just a few weeks ago, she completed her first novel, Shattered Sky, a 94,000-word, Science Fiction/Young Adult Thriller. It’s a gripping thriller about a young girl who sets out on a mission to save her kidnapped sister and experiences sacrifice, betrayal, and love in a post-WWIII world where survival necessities are scarce.

Additionally, Victoria began writing a “how-to” book, Living the American Dream Your Way: How to Turn Your American Dream into Reality (working title). This book will serve up a healthy dose of inspiration based on her unique journey, as well as proven methods of starting a business without taking unnecessary risks. With both books, a portion of the proceeds will be set aside for various charities to help others.

https://victoriawieck.com/
--- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/richard-lamonica/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/richard-lamonica/support
