Relapse!

For many reasons, no matter how hard you try, even if you hate it, when you give up alcohol it has an annoying habit of creeping back into your mind. Strong emotions, triggery places and drinking culture, mean thoughts of it seep in, little nudges and voices begin shoving you towards having 'just one' and before you know it, you're at the bottle shop paying for a bottle of Sav.

For some, relapse is a part of the sobriety path and others manage to circumvent it. But how? Today Vic and Lucy delve into the times they wobbled, tell you the most common relapse triggers, give you some tips on how to avoid going back and discuss the shame and drama that jogs alongside returning to booze after a period of abstinence.

Show Notes

Join the free social network for the sober and sober curious made by awkward for you!!

go to www.cuppa.community and find your kind of people. Behind Closed Doors

Today Vic and Lucy are trying to understand why drinking can sometimes retreat behind closed doors. Is it because of parenting woes, because of shame or because people feel safer in the confines of their own four walls? What really causes people to hide away and what are the warning signs that your drinking has spiralled out of control?

Today they discuss the somewhat-warped mindset that comes with drinking at home and, most importantly, what to do if you’re sinking a bottle of Sav from the perceived safety of your sofa. They discuss weird ailments, from gallstones to thinning hair, and how their bodies feel since ditching the grog. Have they healed? Today you're getting a sober awkward health check from two prestigious party girls. Was Vic's back pain caused by booze filled aching kidneys? Sober people deserve a holiday too, you just need to be prepared and reframe your time away from home.

On this hilarious episode Vic and Lucy will delve into messy drinking holidays of the past, compare them to sober holidays and take you through the steps you need to put in place to ensure you're not tempted by 'just one' Pina Colada. The Dangers of Highly Functioning

Series 3 is here! Today Vic and Lucy discuss being highly functional drinkers. What is it and why does it take so long to identify? Both the girls functioned well enough in life to cleverly and silently slip under the radar, they held down jobs, got married and even pulled off motherhood! They looked functional from the outside but beneath the function they were both heavily drinking, using their success's as an excuse to pour another glass. Today Vic and Lucy have some revelations about their sordid pasts and find out why waking up at 5am for a jog, being the best parent in the world or keeping down a steady job, might not have meant they were winning.... It actually meant they were hiding a problem in plain sight. A Merry AF Christmas?

The tree’s up, the presents are wrapped, and everyone is getting ready for the big day. But for sober people Christmas can ‘throw up’ a few unexpected cravings and some very uncomfortable conversations. Being the one person that’s breaking tradition, and not downing Bucks Fizz for breakfast, can be a challenge. But, Lucy and Vic were astonished to find they both enjoy a sober Christmas much more than a hammered one. They get to absorb the good, ignore the bad and leave when they’ve had enough. So, how do you make it through this annual drinking marathon sober? And is it ok to say no? On this episode they will share lots of tips and tricks on how to get through this momentous day with nothing but a gaudy jumper and a few firm boundaries. They’ll teach you how to be sober punks and break the traditions ingrained since childhood, oh, and they will also talk a lot about the importance of pudding. A funny and festive episode.

Show notes

Blog Post – https://www.drunkmummysobermummy.com/post/surviving-christmas-sober

@soberawkward @drunkmummysobermummy

@beanstalksinglemums

Lucy Good - https://www.beanstalkmums.com.au

Victoria Vanstone – www.drunkmummysobermummy.com

vic@drunkmummysobermummy.com

Facebook Group for Sober Curious Women -

https://www.facebook.com/groups/drunkmummysobermummy

Hosted on Acast. How People Help or Hinder Your Sobriety.

Today it's all about the people. The ones you surrounded yourself with when drunk, and when newly sober. Vic and Lucy hid amongst heavy drinkers for most of their boozy lives. It's how they avoided confronting their own issues. But now, they are both loud and proud sober women.... but it hasn't all been plain sailing. They both still find it challenging being around people that drink and it's hard navigating old friendships in which alcohol was the only common denominator. So, how do you stay friends with people that no longer socialise in the same way you do? and is it really possible to live with a heavy drinker and get sober? On this episode you'll find out why sobriety has to be a solo endeavour and why your changes could open the sobriety door to the people around you.

Show notes

Blog Post – https://www.drunkmummysobermummy.com/post/drinking-buddies @soberawkward @drunkmummysobermummy

@beanstalksinglemums

Lucy Good - https://www.beanstalkmums.com.au

Victoria Vanstone – www.drunkmummysobermummy.com

vic@drunkmummysobermummy.com

Facebook Group for Sober Curious Women -

https://www.facebook.com/groups/drunkmummysobermummy

T

Hosted on Acast. Alcohol and the Pandemic

Today Lucy and Vic are talking about the how the pandemic has affected alcohol intake. Unfortunately, home lockdowns, boredom and fear meant alcohol consumption increased by 25% in 2021. People are leaning on booze more than ever before. For some, the pandemic meant they were dragged further into an already toxic relationship with alcohol and others were actually forced to confront their demons and used Covid19 as an opportunity to change. So, did covid break you or make you? Today Vic and Lucy want to delve into how you can identify if your drinking has got out of control and uncover the signs that your habit needs addressing. The Impact of Words

Alcoholic, me? Not on your Nelly! On this Episode of Sober Awkward Vic and Lucy discuss the impact of words related to sobriety. During the chat they discover how some words support recovery, and how others can actually derail it. For some people (including Vic) being called an 'Alcoholic' felt extreme and didn't represent the sort of drinker she was, but for Lucy, that word gave her strength, identity and eventually enabled her to address her drinking habit. So, todays episode is an opportunity to help you untangle some of these controversial words and find ones that fit your personal path to lasting sobriety.

Show notes

https://australianpodcastawards.com/vote

@soberawkward

@drunkmummysobermummy

Blog Post - Alcoholic me?htthttps://www.drunkmummysobermummy.com/post/alcoholic-me

Lucy Good - https://beanstalkmums.com.au

@beanstalksinglemums

Victoria Vanstone – www.drunkmummysobermummy.com

vic@drunkmummysobermummy.com

Facebook Group for Sober Curious Women - https://www.facebook.com/groups/drunkmummysobermummy

Alcoholics Anonymous - https://aa.org.au

Mental Health - https://www.mindaustralia.org.au

Hosted on Acast. Understanding You Are Worthy of Help.

There is a lonely place where heavy drinkers get stuck. This grey area or 'Pinot Gris Purgatory' as Vic likes to call it, is sadly where many boozers suffer in silence and don't get the help they deserve. This is a topic very close to Vic and Lucy's hearts, having both fallen through this crack themselves. They got stuck in a drinkers no-mans land, where they didn't feel that their drinking was bad enough to be worthy of support. Today they discuss why they felt so trapped and the denial that kept them there, how eventually they took responsibility for their drinking habits and how getting support lead them to not only liking themselves, but also understanding that no matter where they sat on the vast spectrum of alcoholism, they, like you, were worthy of help. Risk!

If you've been a heavy drinker for many years you might have a few war wounds, perhaps you've had a couple of hospital visits, been to the STD clinic or even suffered mental health problems due to your alcohol intake. Vic and Lucy have both suffered in different ways from being big boozers. In this episode they discuss all the different ways they put their bodies and minds at risk over the years, the dangerous situations they found themselves in, why they ignored all the red flags and how it feels now to be on the other side of the chaos. So, if you've woken up recently with a cut on your head or a stranger in your bed, then maybe it's time to stop taking risks and make some changes.
