Posthumus finds refuge with his father’s old friend Philario in Rome, where he meets a nobleman named Iachimo. When Posthumus tells Iachimo that Imogen is fairer than the fairest ladies in France, Iachimo bets that he can seduce her. Posthumus accepts the wager, staking the ring his wife gave him when they secretly exchanged vows.
