An Uneven Wilderness: Unwound's Repetition
We're back from vacation with a short and sweet episode on the post-hardcore noise rock stylings of Unwound, a band that created, as Fred Thomas of AllMusic once said, "some of the more influential and lasting work of their era, with their cloudy moods and explosively tense group dynamics culminating in some truly transcendent albums." On this episode, we're diving into our favorite album from the group, 1996's Repetition. Rewind: Jimmy Eat World - Clarity
Another rewind episode? What are you guys on vacation or something? Yes. Yes we are. Now considered a touchstone record of the emo genre, we take a look at Jimmy Eat World's 1999 classic Clarity, and how the sound they were perfecting ushered us into the third wave of emo music. Before that we go all the way back to the spring of 1985 in Washington D.C. to explore the origins of emo, and discuss how difficult the genre is to define. F*cking Phil: Drop Nineteens' Delaware
For those just getting into the shoegaze genre, there are a handful of albums that are must-listens. Of course at the top sits My Bloody Valentine's "Loveless", Slowdive's "Souvlaki", and Ride's "Nowhere". But while there are must-listen albums, perhaps more important are the must-listen songs. And for many, Drop Nineteen's Delaware features one of shoegaze's greatest moments: the ethereal, slow-build simmer of "Kick The Tragedy", a near 9 minute drone with an unexpected sucker punch two-thirds of the way through that left a lasting impression on new and old fans of the genre and cemented the band as one of shoegaze's greatest acts.
