2017 Hawaii football preview
The latest preview podcast focuses on the Hawaii football team which is coming off a 7-7 year where they beat Middle Tennessee State in the bowl game in Nick Rolovich's first year on the sidelines. The Warriors finally have their quarterback position settled with Dru Brown as the returning starter. It has been a few years with no battle or injury at that position. Brown came in midway last year and shined for the Warriors and expectations are high for Hawaii to repeat what they did last year. Their schedule is not as tough and have a lot less travel as they are not going to Sydney this season. The defense should take a step forward with returning talent and the offense needs to find a wide receiver to replace the production of Marcus Kemp. Is the American better than the Mountain West?
In our latest podcast we expand the conversation about the #AmericanPowr6 with Collin Sherwin of The Daily Stampede who covers South Florida for SB Nation. We first get into what Mike Aresco is thinking about promoting the American Athletic Conference as a Power 6 league. Sherwin was there on hand at media days for the comments about the commissioner's vision. Next we go back and forth about how good the American vs. Mountain West is and if there is any point from doing a challenge between the two leagues in football. Then we divert to talk MLS, Tijuana, hypothetical bowl games and Petco Park. SUPPORT THE PODCAST This episode is presented by Texture. 2017 Fresno State Football Preview
In this latest show we talk Fresno State's expectations as Jeff Tedford is the new head coach for the Bulldogs. The Bulldogs are coming off a one-win season and the hope is that they win more than that last year, but there is a lot of work to do to get this Fresno State team back to the level of winning they are used to. There is talent at wide receiver position and there is hope that this offense will take a step forward with quarterback Chason Virgil back under center and an offensive line that can't be worse than they were last season. Did AAC commissioner Mike Aresco change our minds?
In the latest short version of our podcast Jeremy discusses more on the American trying to push their agenda as the sixth power league. The American is still forcing the #Pow6r
The return of the daily-ish good morning Mountain West podcast is back! Everyone must be thinking what the heck is up the this title. Well, it is a what the American Athletic Conference is branding themselves. They are trying to shoehorn their league into a non-existent seat at the big boy table. We give them credit since the Mountain West is not doing much, but still come on AAC. I also threw some shade at CBS Sports who for some reason believe the AAC has earned the benefit of the doubt in terms of respect among the Group of Five. They don't have that and have only been to one NY6 bowl game. The other news hit in this podcast is a bit more detail on Air Force's Troy Calhoun discussing an eight-team playoff with a preceding playoff between four Group of Five teams. ----- SUPPORT THE PODCAST This episode is presented by Texture. 2017 New Mexico Lobos football preview
Jeremy and Matt are back to talk about one of the most interesting teams in the Mountain West: the New Mexico Lobos. Their run-option attack will put a scare into any team they face this year and it does not really matter that they lost Teriyon Gipson because the next running back up should replicate his success, or be very close. New Mexico does have a senior quarterback in Lamar Jordan which could help this offense if he can increase his passing percentage a few points and get above 55 percent. The big concern is the defense. Last year, the Lobos defense was right around average but they lose majority of those players from last year. This very well could cause this unit to take a step back. With the defense not being as good that will mean the offense will need to outscore opponents this year. WAYS TO SUPPORT THE SHOW. Help us out by getting a FREE 14-day trial to Texture. 2017 Utah State football preview
Jeremy and Matt are back with a few announcements on the show. First off, all of our content is currently being hosted at patreon.com/MWCwire until our official home is finalized at CollegeFootballNews.com. This latest show previews Utah State who is coming off a year where they went 3-9 but did lose four games by a touchdown or less. There is promise with this Aggies team with those close loses. The big question about this team is if Matt Wells will be back as head coach after the 2017 season. We does have a contract through 2019 and had support from the AD, however a third-straight losing season might do him in. The Aggies had a big blow when wide receiver Rayshad Lewis decided to transfer after spring football. Lewis was expected to play a key role on offense and be part of one of the best wide receiver units in the country. The running back position is one to watch now that Devante Mays has moved on to the NFL. The running game last year was poor when Mays was out and neither Tonny Lindsey or LaJuan Hunt could do much last year, but if the offenseis going to be any good they need a solid running game. 2017 Colorado State football preview
Jeremy and Matt are back to preview the Colorado State Rams and their 2017 season. After finishing 7-6 a year ago, Mike Bobo's third year in Fort Collins comes with great expectations: The Rams were among the nation's best teams in the second half of last fall, period, and are in the mix for the Group of Five's spot in a New Year's Day bowl. CSU's offense is littered with stars, including senior quarterback Nick Stevens, senior receiver Michael Gallup and the three-headed running attack of Dalyn Dawkins, Izzy Matthews and (if he's healthy) Marvin Kinsey Jr. They should be able to put up points on just about anyone. The big question that remains is whether the defense, which returns eight starters including linebackers Josh Watson and Evan Colorito, can take a step forward. If the Rams can reach their potential on both sides of the ball, their first season in the new on-campus stadium could be a special one. WAYS TO SUPPORT THE SHOW. 2017 San Diego State football preview
Jeremy and Matt are back for the preview the San Diego State Aztecs who are the two-time defending conference champions. The Aztecs do lose a lot of talen on both sides of the ball including NCAA's all-time leading rusher in Donnel Pumphrey. With the West division still not great San Diego State has a good shot at winning the division again this season. Their schedule is a bit tougher so a shot at a New Year's Six bowl game could be within reach as they play Boise State, Stanford, Arizona State and a potentially decent team in Northern Illinois. The big question for the Aztecs is how much better can the passing game be? WAYS TO SUPPORT THE SHOW. Help us out by getting a FREE 14-day trial to Texture. 2017 Nevada Wolf Pack football preview
Jeremy and Matt are back to preview the Nevada Wolf Pack and their 2017 season. The big ticket item surrounding this team is the new coaching staff where Jay Norvell is taking over from Brian Polian. This offense is expected to be a pass-happy attack which we are coining #AirWolf due to its tendencies. There is a quarterback battle brewing with Ty Gangi who started the back half of last year as an injury replacement for Tyler Stewart is being challenged by former Alabama quarterback David Cornwell. Despite who is quarterback the offense will be throwing a lot and handing the ball off to James Butler, and he very well could be the best running back in the conference. The defense needs work as the front seven was one of the worst in the country last year, but the plus side is that they return nearly all of those players. WAYS TO SUPPORT THE SHOW. San Jose State has a new head coach with Brent Brennan who is coming over from Oregon State and is making a return back to San Jose where he coached before. 2017 Wyoming football preview
Matt and Jeremy are back for their next season preview which is the Wyoming Cowboys. The main attraction for the Cowboys is quarterback Josh Allen who is expected to be a high NFL Draft pick, but his weapons are lacking due to multiple players off to the NFL. The Cowboys won the Mountain Division last year and to do so they will need to reload the offense that lost multiple skill players but they do have a defense that returns a lot of talent but there is still room to grow on that side of the ball. Jeremy and Matt are here to preview the upcoming 2017 Boise State football season, as chosen by our listeners, social media followers and readeres. The Broncos should be projected to contend for both their division and also the conference, but they lose a good number of pieces on both offense and defense. They do return QB Brett Rypien goes a long way to help mitigate the losses of RB Jeremy McNichols and WR Thomas Sperbeck. American Athletic conference positioning itself...
We are back for our (hopefully) daily short podcast on the latest news within the Mountain West. This version Jeremy discusses the hashtag that is #AmericanPow6r where the AAC wants to position itself as the next power league. Also, what is the Mountain West doing to stay on track with the American or get closer to the Power Five schools. There is more info out on the Air Force situation where the cadets are not allowed to pursue a pro contract until after they serve their two years. In short, timing was awful. Also, post-spring top 25 polls are rolling out. One guess on who the Mountain West representative is? NFL Draft recap of the Mountain West selections
Jeremy and Matt return for another show and this time to recap the NFL Draft and the Mountain West. Before we get to the picks we discuss how the decision that came down that would not allow an exemption for Air Force athletes to pursue a pro deal. The timing of this is odd since the Jalen Robinette and other Falcon football players worked out at the Falcons pro day, but the kicker is that the announcement came out the weekend of the draft. We then dive into the eight picks and go over how they can fit into their NFL teams, and also what undrafted players could make an impact or make a 53-man roster. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/mwwire/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/mwwire/support

Mountain West NFL Draft preview
Jeremy and Matt are back a few days earlier than normal to preview the NFL Draft and what Mountain West players will be taken and what their best fits could be at the next level. There are probably about a dozen players who could get drafted this next week, and we go through the next level stats from Pro Football Focus, Football Outsiders and others to get as much info as possible about the draft. We start with the running back position as it is the deepest of draftable players, but that position might not be the first selected from the conference. There is a chance an offensive lineman or possibly even a defensive back be taken first. San Jose State running back coach Alonzo Carter
This week's show features Jeremy Mauss going solo and the show starts by discussing some spring news and notes, but the main portion of the show is interviewing San Jose State running back coach Alonzo Carter. Carter first burst onto our radar this past week after he broke out some dance moves to M.C. Hammers's "U Can't Touch This" after a recent practice. He discussed his touring career with M.C. Hammer but also about how he moved up in the coaching world where Carter had great success winning seven high school titles and multiple conference titles at Contra Costa College. Perhaps his most successful achievement is the approximately 100 players he has sent on to play at the Division I level. There is also a story about Oprah and the Grammy's. We also asked if there would be an encore to his dance moves. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/mwwire/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/mwwire/support

Is the New Mexico coaching search over?
The New Mexico coaching search took a wild turn on over the weekend and through Mounda when reports came out that the top four choices for the Lobos were no longer in consideration: Joe Dooley (FGCU), Scott Cross (UT-Arlington), Steve Forbes (Eastern Tennessee State) and James Borrego (San Antonio Spurs assistant coach). Then a report came out Monday night from Jon Rothstein that said New Mexico is “close to finalizing a deal” with New Mexico State's Paul Weir. We also discuss Steve Fisher stepping down as San Diego State's head coach and what he meant to the program he built into a powerhouse on the West Coast. New Mexico coaching search: Who are the Lobos t...
The New Mexico Lobos let go of Craig Neal late on March 31 and now are in search of a new head coach. Athletic director Paul Krebs has moved quickly and is meeting with coaches at the Final Four, and interviewing at least former Lobo assistant Joe Dooley. The financials from New Mexico are not good and they may have to go bargain hunting to find their next head coach, and it doesn't help that the Mountain West had another down year by sending just one team to the NCAA Tournament. The Lobos job is attractive enough to get some decent names and if the new coach can retain the four players who announced they are leaving to stay then New Mexico would be one of the better teams in the Mountain West next year. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/mwwire/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/mwwire/support

Eric Mussselman remains at Nevada
The Nevada Wolf Pack were blessed with a gift when Eric Musselman decided to withdraw his name from consideration for the Cal head coaching job. To say this is big news for the Wolf Pack, and the Mountain West, is an understatement. The league needs to keep quality coaches to get out of the rut of sending just one team to the NCAA Tournament. For Nevada, this will help them stay in the top part of the Mountain West as long as Musselman is their head coach, and it could convince Cameron Oliver to return to school for another year instead of testing his worth in the NBA Draft as he did last year. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/mwwire/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/mwwire/support

Will the Mountain West take back their rights a...
Jeremy and Matt discuss future TV options within the Mountain West and specifically how streaming games could work. We discuss the league having its own network and be accessed for a small monthly fee of say $10 per month, hooking up with Amazon Prime which really wants to broadcast live sports, Twitter, Hulu or Netflix. Streaming games has a lot of issues and for the Mountain West there are two big one’s in access to the games and also can the league make enough money to make it worth the fairly drastic change. One reason there is talk of adjusting the TV package is to avoid the 10 p.m. ET and later kick offs and tip offs in football and basketball. By streaming and controlling more of the rights to games that would not be an issue. There are plenty of ideas on the topic, and to be honest this show could be triple the length (no one wants that) to discuss ideas. Mountain West basketball tournament primer
Jeremy and Eli are back to preview the Mountain West tournament. We dive into the bracket and make predictions on what team is hot at the right time (hint: only Nevada) and what teams could cause an upset. The tournament starts late morning on the West Coast with an intriguing opening round game between San Jose State and Utah State, but do not expect the winner go move on farther than that in the bracket. A few teams to watch for who are not in the top three seeds are San Diego State who has experience in the tournament and has been a mainstay in the title game over the past decade, Fresno State who won the whole thing last year and then New Mexico who is great at getting to the free throw line and they have Tim Williams back who is a big help. The odds favor Nevada winning the whole thing and it looks right now that they are only going to get into the NCAA Tournament by winning the Mountain West tournament. So, it is a winner take all scenario. Also. Boise State introduces Eric Kiesau
Boise State stayed within the conference to hire its next wide receivers coach by bringing in former Fresno State offensive coordinator Eric Kiesau. While the Bulldogs offense was not great this past year the one area that was mildly successful was the wide receiving group for the Bulldogs. Kiesau will have his work cut out for him as Boise State is losing one of their best wide receivers in school history in Thomas Sperbeck and also senior Chaz Anderson. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/mwwire/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/mwwire/support

Mountain West basketball: Nevada step on up!
Jeremy and Eli are back for another Mountain West hoops podcast and we begin the show discussing the incident that happened between Colorado State and New Mexico. Luckily for us, it has been nearly a week and a lot of information came out and we can now give our thoughts on what happened now that more details, even though not completely, have been presented. We dive into Boise State's recent struggles now that they have fallen back into the field with two league losses and are behind Nevada for the top of the conference. Also, is there a chance Fresno State sneaks into the top half of the league based on how well they play at home, and did New Mexico finally find a much needed third scorer for this team Also, there is fast food chat on the show. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/mwwire/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/mwwire/support

Boise State is starting pull away from the Moun...
Mountian West basketball has plenty of talent but the wins are lacking among the conferene. That is why this league is all but assured to be a single bid team -- I know a broken record. Well, at this early point in the season the conference is led by Boise State at 4-0 and the Broncos are pulling away from the rest of the league. That all could change very quickly in this league as road victories are tough and the Broncos still have away games at Nevada, New Mexico and Wyoming; Boise State gets a benefit from the schedule by not having to play at San Diego. We discuss a little bit of bracket, the ending of New Mexico and Nevada plus a look ahead ot the important games this week. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/mwwire/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/mwwire/support

Look back at the Mountain West football season
Jeremy and Matt are back to look back at the 2016 football season and attempt to recall how bad most of their picks were from the preseason. We discuss some news about Wyoming QB Josh Allen and the NFL Draft but then during the show it is reported he decided to come back, so you can ignore the first 15 or so minutes. We also look ahead to 2017 with a few way-too-early predictions.
