2020 Fresno State Football Preview

Jeremy and Matt are back to preview the 2020 Fresno State football season. The Bulldogs have a new head coach in Kalen DeBoer but he is no stranger to Fresno State fans as he was the offensive coordinator during the 2018-19 seasons which saw Fresno State go to a pair of Mountain West title games.

The offense will have a new quarterback which should be better than last year in the race to replace Jorge Renya and it should be an upgrade for whoever gets the job. The running back group is deep with Ronnie Rivers and the return of Jordan Mimms from injury. The wide out group is deep but an emerging star is still up in the air.

The defense was not up to standards in 2019 and with returning talent like linebacker Justin Rice who is one of the best defenders in the league, and the defense should take a step forward and no longer be near the bottom of the Mountain West but rather improve to at least average, if not better.
--- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/mwwire/messageSupport this podcast: https://anchor.fm/mwwire/support

2020 San Jose State and UNLV team previews

Jeremy and Matt are back to take a look at what have been for the UNLV and San Jose State's football season. These were the two teams we did not get to before the Mountain West decided cancel the fall season. We go through each team and what could have been by going through the rosters of each team. A big takeaway was that San Jose State has things going in the right direction and could have caused some noise in 2020. UNLV would under a new head coach has a lot to work on, especially a defense that has given up over 30 points per game for basically forever.

We start the show discussing some news with New Mexico which is being sued by the family of Nahje Flowers who took his own life and the lawsuit alleges that head coach Bob Davie overruled doctors that said Flowers should not be playing but was forced to anyways.
--- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/mwwire/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/mwwire/support

Matt and Jeremy are back to take a look at some comparisons of teams that are similar in style, play and historical for the upcoming season. We run through the teams and do our best to comp Group of 5 and Power 5 teams to get on the bandwagon now. What will Mountain West football look when it's...

Jeremy and Matt are back to discuss the decision that the Mountain West made which was to cancel football in the fall with the plan to push it back in the spring. We dive into why that decision was made. Losing the season is a gut punch even if it was expected by a lot of people. There is a petition to get college football back for the Big Ten but that seems to be short-sighted with the medical evidence we know and a lot we do not know.

We also go through many options of how a Mountain West spring football season could be done safely. They include a showcase, monthly games, rivals only and a shortened season of seven games.
--- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/mwwire/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/mwwire/support

We go over the reasons behind MAC canceled the football season and if it was the right choice (which is the right move). Health was clearly at the top as to why to not play football from both leagues, plus with actual football not happening yet, we don't know how much COVDI-19 will be transferred once the players get in close contact. Mountain West announces new football schedule; ...

Jeremy and Matt discuss the new schedule for the upcoming Mountain West football schedule which is an eight-game league slate plus two non-conference games. This allows Air Force to schedule Army and Navy but the league says teams can schedule up to two more games, so there will be some teams that play anywhere between eight and 10 games. Then they discuss if there will even be a college football season with the MAC not playing this fall and UConn also forgoing football this fall.
--- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/mwwire/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/mwwire/support

Matt and Jeremy are joined by our Colorado State writer Josh Fredlund to discuss the allegations put on the Colorado State. The issues started with COVID-19 protocols allegedly being violated by the coaching staff. That started an investigation but that was not all. There are also allegations of racial issues within the program. There are a lot of players and coaches who back new head coach Steve Addazio so there is something going on in the program. There is a lot to figure out and the school is looking into the football department and the athletic department as this is not all encompassed within the athletic department.
--- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/mwwire/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/mwwire/support

2020 Boise State Football Preview

Matt and Jeremy are back to preview the 2020 Boise State season. As of now, the Broncos have a full 12-game slate so we preview as normal. While this Boise State team does return 11 starts back from both sides of the ball there seems to not be any regression and possibly even an improvement over last year.

The quarterback spot is one of the deepest in the league with starter Hank Bachmeier returning for his second year and he should take a big step forward, assuming he remains healthy. Running back is deep as well led by George Holani also heading into his sophomore season, the wide receiving group does lose talent but there is talent back. The offensive line and defensive line are the biggest question marks heading into the season. The former while losing four starters had plenty of backups who started in 2019, plus a few transfers who will help shore up that line.

The defense loses some big names and usually every year there is a name that people aren't really familiar with that step up for a huge season and that should be the case this year.

--- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/mwwire/messageSupport this podcast: https://anchor.fm/mwwire/support

2020 Nevada Football Preview

Jeremy and Matt are back to preview the Nevada Wolf Pack team. This Nevada squad brings back a lot of its talent from last year and couple that with a strong November and this team could be in contention to win the West Division. The team now has just one quarterback in Carson Strong and he is entrenched as the starter and he did play in 10 games last year. There are other pieces as well that include one of the best WR's in Elijah Cooks, the entire offensive line returns and its two top running backs. That should be a success for a breakout offensive season.

The defense returns 10 starters and if they can build upon consistency and be about average then that will allow the Wolf Pack to make a bowl game and challenge for a Mountain West title.
--- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/mwwire/messageSupport this podcast: https://anchor.fm/mwwire/support

2020 Air Force Football Preview

Jeremy and Matt are back to preview the Air Force football season which is already down one game with the Purdue cancelation. The Falcons do lose a lot of talent, eight total starters, but their offense returns their key players in two of the best offensive lineman around, QB Donald Hammond III, and its top two running backs. The defense will have issues in the secondary with most of those starters gone and as per usual, if the Air Force defense can be just above average in yards per play allowed this team will very much compete for a Mountain West title.
--- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/mwwire/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/mwwire/support

2020 Utah State Football Preview

Jeremy and Matt are back to preview the 2020 Utah State which is a team that has a unique identity for this upcoming year. There is a new quarterback in Henry Colombi, a new starting running back in potential breakout star Jaylen Warren, the defense is brand new and there is a new offensive coordinator in Bodie Reeder who comes over from North Texas.

The schedule could be the biggest hurdle for the Aggies team in making a bowl game. They have Washington, Washington State and BYU in non-league play, and in the two cross-division games are San Diego State and Nevada. Looking at games in a vaccum there are a lot of winnable games but the layout of the schedule does not help.

There is no key returning defender for the Aggies but there is usually a standout everyone will know, but we just don't have a real good idea who that can be. Also, head coach Gary Andersen is relying on a number of transfers to fill the defensive holes. This season could be wild for Utah State.
--- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/mwwire/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/mwwire/support

Trying to predict the college football season

Jeremy and Matt are back to take a look at what the upcoming college football season will look like now that athletes are back on campus. With players back for workouts in a small and divided group, there are still people resting positive for COVID-19 and these are non-contact workouts. How can the season go on as planned if non-contact activities cause some COVID-19 positive tests? What goes on when there has to be physical contact to play actual football.

There will be an attempt to have a normal season but it will be tough if the virus keeps spreading the season will be shortened, condensed and, who knows, maybe even canceled.
--- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/mwwire/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/mwwire/support

Jeremy and Matt are back to preview the Hawaii Warriors 2020 football team which will, if nothing else, be an exciting team to watch in the Mountain West. They have a new head coach in Todd Graham and also lost a lot of offensive talent in Cole McDonald and the top three wide receivers but there is potential with who is returning and replacing those players. There is the go-go offense which people should look up and get to know and that unique style of play. As for the defense, they just need to take a small step up to help this team overall. The defensive line need more of a pass rush or disruption to help out the entire unit.

Hawaii has the talent to be a contender in the West Division if things go well and repeat as division champs.
--- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/mwwire/messageSupport this podcast: https://anchor.fm/mwwire/support

2020 New Mexico Football Preview

Jeremy and Matt are back to preview the 2020 New Mexico Lobos football season. The Lobos have moved on from the Bob Davie-era and made a great hire in Danny Gonzales who is a former Lobo coach and player. This hire was very popular with the Lobos fans as was being able to get back Rocky Long to the staff as he is the defensive coordinator.

This team has some potential but with a lot of questions. Quarterback is up in the air but there is a lean toward Tevaka Tuioti who has the most experience and is the only New Mexico signal-caller to complete more than 50 percent of his passes. The top-five pass catchers are back and the running game has a lot of questions but options to tote the ball.

The defense has some real issues with players transferring and overall not being that great, specifically in its pass defense. That is where Long and Gonzales come in as defensive coaches to get these players ready. This team likely won't go bowling but they will be an interesting team to watch.
--- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/mwwire/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/mwwire/support

We discuss the best fits for Love and if it is better for him to start right away or take a back seat for at least part of the year or longer.

The other players who could be early draft picks come from Boise State in Ezra Cleveland and Curtis Weaver.
Jeremy flies solo once again to recap the Cheeze It and Hawaii Bowl, plus he previews the Arizona Bowl between Georgia State and Wyoming. The Warriors defense also stood out with three turnovers of their own. There was some technology issues in the game that could have made things a bit different but the bowl game was lacking the proper tech.

Air Force vs. Washington State lived up to the hype with the Falcons running at will and the Cougars offense slinging the ball quite well. Grading The Colorado State, UNLV Coaching Hires

Matt and Jeremy are back to go over some of the big news from the Mountain West. It starts with discussing Utah State QB Jordan Love declaring for the NFL Draft and if he made the right choice. Plus, how will he fit in the NFL and what team could be a good fit.

Next, they go over and pick apart and grade UNLV hiring Marcus Arroyo who comes to UNLV from Oregon where he was the offensive coordinator. The other coaching change saw Colorado State bring in recently fired Steve Addazio which is not being perceived as a great move for the Rams football program.
--- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/mwwire/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/mwwire/support

Jeremy and Andrew are back for another round of Mountain West hoops talk. They get into how San Diego State and Utah State are the clear top teams and that it might not be all that close, well, maybe New Mexico. It appears that BYU is trying to its best to even its record vs. the Mountain West after its blowout win over Nevada and then they head to Salt Lake City to play Utah State. That Cougars vs. Aggies game could end up being the game of the week with Yoeli Childs back for BYU and Neemias Queta healthy for the Aggies.

We discuss some teams that might surprise in league and Jeremy gives tips on how to run a college basketball program to its fullest potential. 2019 Mountain West Football Title Game Recap

Jeremy and Matt are back to recap the Mountain West football title game which saw Boise State defeat Hawaii 31-10. That three touchdown difference was a bit closer than the score indicated. The Warriors were a bit more aggressive and it cost them a few times when they were in the red zone. Plus, points off of turnovers did not help the Warriors either.

We also get into the bowl game selections which look really good, rail on the College Football Playoff ranking system and the rankings in general, and then a quick discussion regarding Jeff Tedford stepping down as Fresno State's head coach due to health reasons.
--- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/mwwire/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/mwwire/support

2019 Mountain West Week 14 Football Recap

Jeremy goes solo to recap the final week of the Mountain West regular-season which did not have much on the line except for Boise State who needed a win to remain in the hunt for a New Year's Six bowl game. There were games where coaches were in their last game and no team had a chance to earn a bowl bid as there were no teams that could not get to six wins. The big story of the weekend was the fight that broke out between Nevada and UNLV after the Rebels won in overtime. That took away from a competitive game that needed extra time to decide its winner.

Air Force topped Wyoming and shutdown its ground attack while the Falcons threw the ball a lot, San Jose State's defense made big plays vs. Fresno State, San Diego State's defense smothered BYU, and Hawaii's defense was the reason it defeated Army.
--- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/mwwire/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/mwwire/support

Mountain West Basketball: Utah State, San Diego...

Our first Mountain West basketball podcast is here for the season (sorry for no preseason shows) we have Jeremy Mauss being joined by Andrew Dieckhoff to kick things off with some big picture hoops. Early on it seems Utah State is clearly the best team and they aren't even at full strength and San Diego State is in the neighborhood and then there is a jumbled mess of a teams to pick from. UNLV has a new coach and is struggling, Air Force is disappointing, and New Mexico is the closest to the top two but aren't quite there.

The Rams are a team with Nico Carvacho who is an overlooked player and even if Colorado State is not in the mix for a conference title, he should be in the running for player of the year. We both expect Colorado State to pull off an upset or two along the way.

Finally, San Jose State might be slowly getting better and the next step is to more than double the wins from last year and challenge for double-digit victories.
--- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/mwwire/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/mwwire/support

2019 Week 13 Mountain West Football Preview

Jeremy and Matt are back to preview the 13th week of Mountain West football. There are rivalries and championships on the line. The Bronze Boot gets things started on Friday night with Colorado State taking on Wyoming. The Rams are wanting to remain in the discussion for a bowl game. The Saturday games have two big ones that could determine the championship game attendees. A Boise State win over Utah State puts them in the title game and hosting, a loss means tiebreakers come into play. San Diego State vs. Hawaii is a winner-take-all in the West Division and is a late night Facebook game.

Nevada takes on Fresno State and the Bulldogs are wanting to get to a bowl game and need to get this win to have at least five and then win next week as well. What it really comes down to is the Broncos need a two-loss AAC team to win the title, or if we dig a bit deeper a one-loss SMU team as they are a few spots behind Boise State.

We run through the scenarios of the teams in the mix and predict some outcomes for this week since the competition gets a bit tougher, specifically for Boise State and Cincy.

At the end, the duo does a quick preview of Boise State and Utah State and take a stab at the quarterback situation for each team.
--- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/mwwire/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/mwwire/support

San Diego State vs. Fresno State got things going on Friday night with the Aztecs taking home the Old Oil Can while forcing Bulldogs QB Jorge Reyna to have his worst game of the year with three picks.

The Saturday games started with a shocking low scoring game with Hawaii topping UNLV, 21-7, and the Warriors decided to swap quarterbacks, again. The Bulldogs need two wins to become bowl eligible and this a game that might be close than some think.

On Saturday the UNLV Rebels host the Hawaii Warriors for what we call the "Golden Pineapple" which is far superior compared to the “Ninth Island Showdown.” Wyoming and Utah State battle for Bridger's rifle in what could be a defensive showdown, Colorado State is fighting for bowl eligibility vs. Air Force for the Ram-Falcon trophy.
Jeremy and Raj are back to discuss the second week of the College Football Playoff rankings and how they impact Boise State. The Broncos did move up one spot to No. 21 and are still behind Memphis and Cincinnati. That has us put the Broncos in the second-tier for the Cotton Bowl bid from the Group of Five.

We go through the games that could change the rankings from the Group of Five and odds are one of two of these American teams could lose and assist the Broncos move up for next week's rankings.
--- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/mwwire/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/mwwire/support

Jeremy and Matt are back to preview the 11th Week of Mountain West football which has just four games instead of five. The Air Force vs. New Mexico game is being postponed due to the death of the Lobos Nahje Flowers. That game is being pushed to Nov. 23 when each team has an off week.

We do briefly discuss the College Football Playoff rankings and what games to look for within the Group of Five. Fresno State hosts Utah State in a game where both teams are going in different directions, to a degree. San Diego State hosts a Nevada team that has settled on a quarterback but the big thing to watch in this game is the running game.

Wyoming and Boise State will be interesting but only if the Cowboys defense can slow down the Broncos offense, and the night game between San Jose State and Hawaii is worth staying up for as it could eclipse 80 total points.
--- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/mwwire/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/mwwire/support

Air Force is a good team and found out a way to get its win over rival Army and the same can be said as Boise State needed everything to defeat a pesky San Jose State team on the road late Saturday night.

Colorado State is showing to be a tough team, at least on offense, and could be a team to play spoiler the rest of the way and maybe make a bowl game. UNLV which lost to the Rams is in trouble and the question about its head coaching position which is still occupied by Tony Sanchez.

Nevada is one step closer to bowl eligibility after topping New Mexico. The other is more interesting with BYU traveling to Utah State. The Aggies have been struggling a bit this year and so has BYU, the Cougars have not who said what player will be under center. Expect this one to be close.

The Mountain West games feature Colorado State which is slowly improving this year and can continue that vs. UNLV. The one result that was not expected was Air Force easily dispatching Utah State by a score of 31-7. Colorado State pulled off a win over Fresno State which is not the team some people thought they were this year. Wyoming also had an unexpectedly easy victory by topping Nevada, 31-3, with a dominant running performance. One side not of the week is injuries and suspensions. Nevada is pulling quarterback Malik Henry so he can focus on grades, New Mexico suspended quarterback Sheriron Jones, and Colorado State did the same with running back Marvin Kinsey for Colorado State. Those absences could be the difference in those games this week.

The big game of the week is Utah State which traveling to Air Force on Saturday night. 2019 Boise State Football Preview
Matt and Jeremy are back to preview the Boise State football and its 2019 season. The two are also joined by Raja Prabhala who covers the Broncos for the website. The big issue with this team is who will start at quarterback and also running back as both starters have moved on from the program. The Broncos get the benefit of the doubt but that does not mean there are question marks on the program. Odds are that the Broncos will compete for a conference title even though they lost a lot of offensive playmakers. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/mwwire/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/mwwire/support

2019 Hawaii Football Preview
Jeremy and Matt are back to preview the Hawaii football for the 2019 year. Entering the second year of the run-n-shoot might lead to an even more explosive offensive, especially if QB Cole McDonald is healthy. The running game must get better at running the ball and make up the production lost from WR John Ursua. The defense needs to get better but on the positive side there is experience on that side of the ball, and to help the team this unit just needs to be average. 2019 UNLV Football Preview
Matt and Jeremy are back to preview UNLV. The big question is if QB Armani Rogers can stay healthy as he is the most important player for this Rebels team and he is the reason why or why not UNLV will have a big season. Also, head coach Tony Sanchez is on the hot seat with a new athletics director where a bowl game might be what it takes to keep his job. 2019 San Diego State Football Preview
Jeremy and Matt are back to preview the 2019 San Diego State football season. The Aztecs do have a new-ish quarterback in Ryan Agnew is the new full-time starter and a spread offense that will still be running the ball a lot with a healthy Juwan Washington. The defense loses a couple of players but it will still be one of the best in the league. This episode is presented by FuboTV and SlingTV these are two streaming services which can help you watch nearly every Mountain West football or basketball game way less than traditional pay TV. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/mwwire/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/mwwire/support

2019 Colorado State Football Preview
Jeremy and Matt are back to preview the 2019 Colorado State football season. The Rams are coming off a pretty bad yar where they went 3-9 after three straight 7-6 finishes. The big question is if head coach Mike Bobo is on the hot seat since he had a down 2018 but also he is struggling to beat his rivals in Colorado, Air Force, and Wyoming; plus he is not good in bowl games. 2019 Wyoming Football Preview
Matt and Jeremy are back to talk about the 2019 Wyoming football team. The Cowboys have some questions on both sides of the ball, but the offense has more than the defense. On offense, the running game loses Nico Evans and will be replaced by Xazavian Valladay who rushed for nearly 1,000 yards less than Evans. Also, while Sean Chambers is the quarterback, he needs to prove he can throw along with running the ball well.

The Lobos have a tough season ahead of them as they have a new offensive and defensive coordinator, which seems like a sign of desperation for head coach Bob Davie. Also, the Lobos are taking another step away from the successful run-option attack to a more passing game and the success has not been there ever since moving away from its run attack. 2019 San Jose State Football Preview
Jeremy and Matt are back to preview San Jose State's football season which should be at least marginally better. That is not a knock on the Spartans program because while SJSU is getting better but the problem is so is the rest of the league. The Spartans offense has some pieces together and if they are healthy then they could get a few more wins because of that. The defense loses star players but they had decent depth to keep the defense about on par as last year.
