American Athletic conference positioning itself...
We are back for our (hopefully) daily short podcast on the latest news within the Mountain West. This version Jeremy discusses the hashtag that is #AmericanPow6r where the AAC wants to position itself as the next power league. Also, what is the Mountain West doing to stay on track with the American or get closer to the Power Five schools. There is more info out on the Air Force situation where the cadets are not allowed to pursue a pro contract until after they serve their two years. In short, timing was awful. Also, post-spring top 25 polls are rolling out. One guess on who the Mountain West representative is? NFL Draft recap of the Mountain West selections
Jeremy and Matt return for another show and this time to recap the NFL Draft and the Mountain West. Before we get to the picks we discuss how the decision that came down that would not allow an exemption for Air Force athletes to pursue a pro deal. The timing of this is odd since the Jalen Robinette and other Falcon football players worked out at the Falcons pro day, but the kicker is that the announcement came out the weekend of the draft. We then dive into the eight picks and go over how they can fit into their NFL teams, and also what undrafted players could make an impact or make a 53-man roster. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/mwwire/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/mwwire/support

Mountain West NFL Draft preview
Jeremy and Matt are back a few days earlier than normal to preview the NFL Draft and what Mountain West players will be taken and what their best fits could be at the next level. There are probably about a dozen players who could get drafted this next week, and we go through the next level stats from Pro Football Focus, Football Outsiders and others to get as much info as possible about the draft. We start with the running back position as it is the deepest of draftable players, but that position might not be the first selected from the conference. There is a chance an offensive lineman or possibly even a defensive back be taken first. We also have a new sponsor for the show and it is Blue Apron, get $30 off your first order using this link. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/mwwire/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/mwwire/support

San Jose State running back coach Alonzo Carter
This week's show features Jeremy Mauss going solo and the show starts by discussing some spring news and notes, but the main portion of the show is interviewing San Jose State running back coach Alonzo Carter. Carter first burst onto our radar this past week after he broke out some dance moves to M.C. Hammers's "U Can't Touch This" after a recent practice. He discussed his touring career with M.C. Hammer but also about how he moved up in the coaching world where Carter had great success winning seven high school titles and multiple conference titles at Contra Costa College. Perhaps his most successful achievement is the approximately 100 players he has sent on to play at the Division I level. There is also a story about Oprah and the Grammy's. We also asked if there would be an encore to his dance moves. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/mwwire/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/mwwire/support

Is the New Mexico coaching search over?
The New Mexico coaching search took a wild turn on over the weekend and through Mounda when reports came out that the top four choices for the Lobos were no longer in consideration: Joe Dooley (FGCU), Scott Cross (UT-Arlington), Steve Forbes (Eastern Tennessee State) and James Borrego (San Antonio Spurs assistant coach). Then a report came out Monday night from Jon Rothstein that said New Mexico is “close to finalizing a deal” with New Mexico State's Paul Weir. We also discuss Steve Fisher stepping down as San Diego State's head coach and what he meant to the program he built into a powerhouse on the West Coast. Our final topic is discussing how the Mountain West missed on Wichita State and why Grand Canyon could make sense if the league wants to get to 12 basketball teams. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/mwwire/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/mwwire/support

New Mexico coaching search: Who are the Lobos t...
The New Mexico Lobos let go of Craig Neal late on March 31 and now are in search of a new head coach. Athletic director Paul Krebs has moved quickly and is meeting with coaches at the Final Four, and interviewing at least former Lobo assistant Joe Dooley. The financials from New Mexico are not good and they may have to go bargain hunting to find their next head coach, and it doesn't help that the Mountain West had another down year by sending just one team to the NCAA Tournament. The Lobos job is attractive enough to get some decent names and if the new coach can retain the four players who announced they are leaving to stay then New Mexico would be one of the better teams in the Mountain West next year. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/mwwire/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/mwwire/support

Eric Mussselman remains at Nevada
The Nevada Wolf Pack were blessed with a gift when Eric Musselman decided to withdraw his name from consideration for the Cal head coaching job. To say this is big news for the Wolf Pack, and the Mountain West, is an understatement. The league needs to keep quality coaches to get out of the rut of sending just one team to the NCAA Tournament. For Nevada, this will help them stay in the top part of the Mountain West as long as Musselman is their head coach, and it could convince Cameron Oliver to return to school for another year instead of testing his worth in the NBA Draft as he did last year. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/mwwire/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/mwwire/support

Will the Mountain West take back their rights a...
Jeremy and Matt discuss future TV options within the Mountain West and specifically how streaming games could work. We discuss the league having its own network and be accessed for a small monthly fee of say $10 per month, hooking up with Amazon Prime which really wants to broadcast live sports, Twitter, Hulu or Netflix. Streaming games has a lot of issues and for the Mountain West there are two big one’s in access to the games and also can the league make enough money to make it worth the fairly drastic change. One reason there is talk of adjusting the TV package is to avoid the 10 p.m. ET and later kick offs and tip offs in football and basketball. By streaming and controlling more of the rights to games that would not be an issue. There are plenty of ideas on the topic, and to be honest this show could be triple the length (no one wants that) to discuss ideas. Oh... we start the show talking food. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/mwwire/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/mwwire/support

The big topic at hand is the size advantage that Nevada has over Iowa State and how that is a key if the Wolf Pack are going to win. Expect this game to be high-scoring and a lot of three-point shots and there is a good chance for a few highlight dunks betwen Nevada's Cameron Oliver and Iowa State Deonte Burton's. All three are unanimous in their pick for this game, plus we all discuss our overall brackets. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/mwwire/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/mwwire/support

Mountain West championship recap; early NCAA look
Jeremy and Eli are back to recap the Mountai West tournament and then we dive into the NCAA's and some NIT talk as well. For those under a rock, Nevada earned a 12 seed into the NCAA tournament and will face fifth seeded Iowa State from the Big 12. We will breakdown this game in more detail on our next show but we discuss a few of the big picture topcis of the game. The most important topic that we discuss is how to pronounce Nevada as that is apparently a thing in Iowa as there is a town in that state named Nevada but said the incorrect way. Also, thanks to the folks at Wide Right and Natty Lite for creating an amazingly funny post about the Nevada Cubs which is a high school team in Iowa and breakdown that team as their NCAA opponent. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/mwwire/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/mwwire/support
