2019 Mountain West Football Title Game Recap

Jeremy and Matt are back to recap the Mountain West football title game which saw Boise State defeat Hawaii 31-10. That three touchdown difference was a bit closer than the score indicated. The Warriors were a bit more aggressive and it cost them a few times when they were in the red zone. Plus, points off of turnovers did not help the Warriors either.

We also get into the bowl game selections which look really good, rail on the College Football Playoff ranking system and the rankings in general, and then a quick discussion regarding Jeff Tedford stepping down as Fresno State's head coach due to health reasons.
--- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/mwwire/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/mwwire/support

2019 Mountain West Football Championship Game P...

Jeremy and Matt are back to talk a whole lot of Mountain West football despite there being just one game. They first discuss is about the Colorado State job that opened up and what makes it an attractive job and if the Rams can turn into a G5 heavyweight. They look over the all-league awards and compare the media list and our picks as well to see what stands out.

As for the game itself, the duo goes over why each team will win and if Hawaii has to be perfect to win the second time around vs. Boise State and the answer is might be a yes. A few keys we discuss are the running game for each squad and will there be an under-the-radar player who comes up big.

They wrap with looking at the race for the New Year's Six bowl game between Boise State and Cincy, assuming both win.
--- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/mwwire/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/mwwire/support

2019 Mountain West Week 14 Football Recap

Jeremy goes solo to recap the final week of the Mountain West regular-season which did not have much on the line except for Boise State who needed a win to remain in the hunt for a New Year's Six bowl game. There were games where coaches were in their last game and no team had a chance to earn a bowl bid as there were no teams that could not get to six wins. The big story of the weekend was the fight that broke out between Nevada and UNLV after the Rebels won in overtime. That took away from a competitive game that needed extra time to decide its winner.

Air Force topped Wyoming and shutdown its ground attack while the Falcons threw the ball a lot, San Jose State's defense made big plays vs. Fresno State, San Diego State's defense smothered BYU, and Hawaii's defense was the reason it defeated Army.
--- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/mwwire/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/mwwire/support

2019 Week 14 Mountain West Football Preview

Jeremy and Matt are back to preview the final week of the Mountain West regular season. There are five league games and two non-conference games. There is not really much on the line this week as there are no more bowl bids that can be earned and the championship game has been set with Hawaii and Boise State.

Speaking of Boise State, they need to win to keep pace in the Group of Five mix and the Cotton Bowl and that is the biggest storyline of the week. We also discuss the coaching changes at both New Mexico and UNLV and what is next for those openings at each school.
--- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/mwwire/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/mwwire/support

2019 Mountain West Football Week 13 Recap

Jeremy and Matt are back to recap another week of Mountain West football and there was a lot on the line this week. Boise State and Hawaii both clinched the division crowns and there will be a rematch for the league title vs. the two teams. Bowl dreams were dashed with Fresno State, Colorado State and San Jose State all going down this weekend.

Also, we go through and attempt to figure out who should be offensive player of the year through each game recap, and it looks like the vote could go to any number of players.
--- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/mwwire/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/mwwire/support

Mountain West Basketball: Utah State, San Diego...

Our first Mountain West basketball podcast is here for the season (sorry for no preseason shows) we have Jeremy Mauss being joined by Andrew Dieckhoff to kick things off with some big picture hoops. Early on it seems Utah State is clearly the best team and they aren't even at full strength and San Diego State is in the neighborhood and then there is a jumbled mess of a teams to pick from. UNLV has a new coach and is struggling, Air Force is disappointing, and New Mexico is the closest to the top two but aren't quite there.

The Rams are a team with Nico Carvacho who is an overlooked player and even if Colorado State is not in the mix for a conference title, he should be in the running for player of the year. We both expect Colorado State to pull off an upset or two along the way.

Finally, San Jose State might be slowly getting better and the next step is to more than double the wins from last year and challenge for double-digit victories.
--- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/mwwire/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/mwwire/support

2019 Week 13 Mountain West Football Preview

Jeremy and Matt are back to preview the 13th week of Mountain West football. There are rivalries and championships on the line. The Bronze Boot gets things started on Friday night with Colorado State taking on Wyoming. The Rams are wanting to remain in the discussion for a bowl game. The Saturday games have two big ones that could determine the championship game attendees. A Boise State win over Utah State puts them in the title game and hosting, a loss means tiebreakers come into play. San Diego State vs. Hawaii is a winner-take-all in the West Division and is a late night Facebook game.

Nevada takes on Fresno State and the Bulldogs are wanting to get to a bowl game and need to get this win to have at least five and then win next week as well. The other game is San Jose State who is also looking to stay on track for a bowl game and they are on the road at UNLV.
--- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/mwwire/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/mwwire/support

Order Of College Football Rankings Really Mean ...

Jeremy and Raj are back to talk about the latest College Football Playoff rankings which if we are being honest do not matter all that much as Boise State is still behind both Memphis and Cincy. What it really comes down to is the Broncos need a two-loss AAC team to win the title, or if we dig a bit deeper a one-loss SMU team as they are a few spots behind Boise State.

We run through the scenarios of the teams in the mix and predict some outcomes for this week since the competition gets a bit tougher, specifically for Boise State and Cincy.

At the end, the duo does a quick preview of Boise State and Utah State and take a stab at the quarterback situation for each team.
--- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/mwwire/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/mwwire/support

2019 Week 12 Mountain West Football Recap

Jeremy and Matt are back to recap Week 12 of Mountain West football or also known as trophy week. There were some close games and some ugly games. San Diego State vs. Fresno State got things going on Friday night with the Aztecs taking home the Old Oil Can while forcing Bulldogs QB Jorge Reyna to have his worst game of the year with three picks.

The Saturday games started with a shocking low scoring game with Hawaii topping UNLV, 21-7, and the Warriors decided to swap quarterbacks, again. Colorado State had many chances to defeat Air Force but was unable to get things on track. Wyoming with its backup quarterback Tyler Vander Waal was unable to overcome his errors with three interceptions.
--- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/mwwire/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/mwwire/support

2019 Mountain West Football Week 12 Preview

Jeremy and Matt are back to preview the 12th week of Mountain West football in what we are dubbing "trophy week" as so many games have a trophy on the line this weekend. Things get started with the Old Oil Can as Fresno State takes on San Diego State on a Friday night game. The Bulldogs need two wins to become bowl eligible and this a game that might be close than some think.

On Saturday the UNLV Rebels host the Hawaii Warriors for what we call the "Golden Pineapple" which is far superior compared to the “Ninth Island Showdown.” Wyoming and Utah State battle for Bridger's rifle in what could be a defensive showdown, Colorado State is fighting for bowl eligibility vs. Air Force for the Ram-Falcon trophy. The final game of the day does not have a trophy on the line as Boise State takes on New Mexico.
--- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/mwwire/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/mwwire/support

How do the latest College Football Playoff rank...

Jeremy and Raj are back to discuss the second week of the College Football Playoff rankings and how they impact Boise State. The Broncos did move up one spot to No. 21 and are still behind Memphis and Cincinnati. Boise State still needs help to move up but they are stuck not only behind the Tigers and Bearcats but Navy could jump Boise State if the Middies defeat Notre Dame. That has us put the Broncos in the second-tier for the Cotton Bowl bid from the Group of Five.

We go through the games that could change the rankings from the Group of Five and odds are one of two of these American teams could lose and assist the Broncos move up for next week's rankings.
--- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/mwwire/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/mwwire/support

2019 Week 11 Mountain West Football Recap

Jeremy and Matt are back to recap Week 11 of Mountain West football in what was one of the most exciting weeks of the season with so many close games and also upsets. This week also had a few controversial play calls by coaches or at least some that a lot of people were going back and forth on.

We start with Utah State and Fresno State which saw both offenses play well but it was the Aggies getting the win. Boise State and Wyoming played a defensive duel with the Broncos winning in overtime. Nevada defeated San Diego State in a slugfest of a game and despite scoring on every single possession, San Jose State lost to Hawaii.

--- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/mwwire/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/mwwire/support

2019 Week 11 Mountain West Football Preview

Jeremy and Matt are back to preview the 11th Week of Mountain West football which has just four games instead of five. The Air Force vs. New Mexico game is being postponed due to the death of the Lobos Nahje Flowers. That game is being pushed to Nov. 23 when each team has an off week.

We do briefly discuss the College Football Playoff rankings and what games to look for within the Group of Five. Fresno State hosts Utah State in a game where both teams are going in different directions, to a degree. San Diego State hosts a Nevada team that has settled on a quarterback but the big thing to watch in this game is the running game.

Wyoming and Boise State will be interesting but only if the Cowboys defense can slow down the Broncos offense, and the night game between San Jose State and Hawaii is worth staying up for as it could eclipse 80 total points.
--- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/mwwire/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/mwwire/support

Sorting out the Group of Five pecking order aft...

Jeremy and Raj are here to bring you reaction for the first College Football Playoff top 25. Think of this as an introduction to know the teams that are in the mix for the coveted New Year's Six spot from the Group of Five. We go through the top 25 and also what teams are contending. The teams earning a ranking are No. 20 Cincinnati, No. 21 Memphis, No. 22 Boise State, No. 24 Navy, and No. 25 SMU.

There is a ton of football left but we comb through a lot of scenarios, so as Jeremy says, 'take notes'. There is talk of chaos with the Army vs. Navy game the week after the final playoff rankings matter, San Diego, State, App State, and UCF's chances of getting into the race. Also, what are the odds that both the Mountain West and American team have just one loss.
--- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/mwwire/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/mwwire/support

2019 Week 10 Mountain West Football Recap

Jeremy and Matt are back to recap the wacky Week 10 of Mountain West football. There were blowouts and unexpected results throughout the day. Air Force is a good team and found out a way to get its win over rival Army and the same can be said as Boise State needed everything to defeat a pesky San Jose State team on the road late Saturday night.

Colorado State is showing to be a tough team, at least on offense, and could be a team to play spoiler the rest of the way and maybe make a bowl game. UNLV which lost to the Rams is in trouble and the question about its head coaching position which is still occupied by Tony Sanchez.

Nevada is one step closer to bowl eligibility after topping New Mexico. The late game saw Fresno State upend Hawaii and we still know nothing much more about the Bulldogs.
--- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/mwwire/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/mwwire/support

2019 Week 10 Mountain West Football Preview

Matt and Jeremy are back to preview Week 10 of Mountain West football which features a pair of non-conference games with four league games on the day, yes, all games are on Saturday this week. The two non-league game feature Air Force hosting its armed services rival in Army and this is a game that the Falcons should handle vs. the falling Black Knights. The other is more interesting with BYU traveling to Utah State. The Aggies have been struggling a bit this year and so has BYU, the Cougars have not who said what player will be under center. Expect this one to be close.

The Mountain West games feature Colorado State which is slowly improving this year and can continue that vs. UNLV. Boise State is coming off of its first loss and will face San Jose State which is sitting at 4-4, Fresno State travels to Hawaii in a key West Division game and then there is New Mexico vs. Nevada.
--- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/mwwire/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/mwwire/support

2019 Week 9 Mountain West Football Recap

Matt and Jeremy are back to look back at Week 9 of Mountain West play that had very interesting results. It started with San Jose State upset Army, at least from a betting standpoint and the Spartans have a legitimate shot at a bowl game as they sit with four wins. The one result that was not expected was Air Force easily dispatching Utah State by a score of 31-7. Colorado State pulled off a win over Fresno State which is not the team some people thought they were this year. Wyoming also had an unexpectedly easy victory by topping Nevada, 31-3, with a dominant running performance. Finally, San Diego State nearly went to overtime vs. UNLV but the Rebels missed a field goal at the end of the game that would have sent it to overtime.
--- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/mwwire/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/mwwire/support

2019 Mountain West Week 9 Football Preview

Jeremy and Matt are back to preview Week 9 of Mountain West play that features a full slate of Saturday games and 11 of the 12 teams in action. The one non-conference game is San Jose State at Army which could be an interesting game that has a line of the Black Knight's being a 9.5-point favorite. One side not of the week is injuries and suspensions. Nevada is pulling quarterback Malik Henry so he can focus on grades, New Mexico suspended quarterback Sheriron Jones, and Colorado State did the same with running back Marvin Kinsey for Colorado State. Those absences could be the difference in those games this week.

The big game of the week is Utah State which traveling to Air Force on Saturday night. The Falcons might not have the services of Donald Hammond III again and Mike Schmidt could be starting. Schmidt had a good performance last week in relief and was a difference-maker for the Falcons.
--- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/mwwire/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/mwwire/support

2019 Week 8 Mountain West Football Recap

Jeremy goes solo to recap everything from Week 8 of Mountain West football. This week was wild with a few upsets and some sorting out the conference races. Fresno State's defense came on strong vs. UNLV by turning in multiple turnovers and stops into 28 points. New Mexico really isn't that bad as they moved the ball vs. Wyoming but failed to convert when it counted in its loss. Speaking of Wyoming, quarterback Sean Chambers completed over 50 percent of his passes for the first time this year.

San Diego State outlasted San Jose State, Boise State fell to BYU and its trick plays, Utah State cruised to victory over Nevada, and Air Force crushed Hawaii on the islands.
--- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/mwwire/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/mwwire/support

2019 Week 8 Mountain West Football Preview

Jeremy and Matt are back to take a quick look back at the midseason of Mountain West football and then look ahead to a very interesting week 8 of Mountain West play. There are 11 teams in action with five conference matchups and one non-league game. Games start on Friday night with Fresno State hosting UNLV and looking to rebound from last week's loss to Air Force, while the Rebels want to build on that momentum. Fresno State is a huge favorite.

On Saturday, New Mexico will attempt to make some offensive noise against Wyoming's defense. There there is San Diego State and San Jose State battle in a game that was very close last year, will it be the same? Boise State at BYU which could see the Cougars play at worst its fourth-string quarterback and if things go well its backup Jaren Hall but he suffered a concussion last week. Nevada at Utah State has a massive three-touchdown line in favor of the Aggies. The action gets started on Friday night between New Mexico and Colorado State, yes that games seem not great but there are implications for the coaches in that game.

Saturday has a lot going on with the two biggest games being at night when Wyoming travels to San Diego State for a defensive showdown in Southern California. The other high-profile game is No. 14 Boise State hosting Hawaii and its run-n-shoot offense and this game in Idaho could lead to more points and has more of a blowout potential but the odds of that are slim.

San Jose State is hoping to get to four wins as they take on Nevada which has a new starting quarterback this week and then Air Force and Fresno State battle in a game where it will finally be known who the Bulldogs are.
--- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/mwwire/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/mwwire/support
