Special - Let's Go Running Up That Hill with Stranger Things

And now we come to the final collaboration and the final episode for the Sensual World season. Roy Harper is a critically acclaimed English singer/songwriter who has been around since the 60s and whose music has been a bit part of Kate's life. We've talked about him before on the podcast when Kate covered his song Another Day in the Lionheart season, and when Kate sang on Roy's original song You (The Game Part II) in the Never For Ever season. Now we get to talk about a third time when his name comes up in her musical history!

Now on to collaboration #2 for the Sensual World era! What does the frontman for an 80s synth rock band and Kate Bush have in common? Why, this song! Midge Ure is best known as the frontman for the band Ultravox, who were known for huge 80s hits like Vienna (voted in the UK the best #2 hit of all time and for good reason!), Dancing With Tears In My Eyes, and Reap the Wild Wind (their only US chart entry). In 1985, he went solo with an album called The Gift. His follow-up album, Answers to Nothing, was released in 1987 and features our lovely Kate on his song Sister and Brother. So listen as we explore this album track and the story of how Midge Ure and Kate Bush got involved for this song!

Now we're on to the last three episodes of the Sensual World season, and we're starting this part with three collaborations that our lovely Kate took part in! The first is a song she recorded in the background for the pop group Go West. Stylistically very different from the upbeat pop that the group was known for, The King is Dead benefits from a jazzy style and of course, our lovely Kate in the background!

This week we're talking (or rather, just Cecilee!) is talking about a favorite b-side of hers from the Sensual World era, I'm Still Waiting. This nugget of a song was released in several different places over the years (This Woman's Work single! Box sets! American-only EPs!) but not even Kate seems to have talked about this song! So we're talking about it this week! Cecilee talks about why this is one of her favorites from the Sensual World era, the music production and structure (of course!), and what the lyrics mean to her.

And now it's time for the b-sides, collaborations, and other era songs for The Sensual World era of Kate's music. This week, we're talking about a song that's both a b-side AND an album track. Or at least, a bonus track, if you bought the cassette or the CD. And that is a song that Kate recorded in about 24 hours (!!) and was the last song recorded for the album: Walk Straight Down The Middle. We have a frequent guest for this show, young Kate fan Diego Ortega, to talk about this song, which he cites as one of his favorites! We talk about what this song means to us. What does the title mean? And how about that rather skeletal and spooky production? Is this Kate's take on synth pop? And how about those BRAAAAAHHHH sounds at the end?
