Pregnant woman arrested in Ballarat for creating anti-lockdown protest event on Facebook Police in Victoria have arrested a pregnant 28-year-old woman in front of her partner and two children for planning an anti-lockdown protest in regional Victoria this weekend. Police arrested the woman, Zoe Buhler, at her home in Miners Rest near Ballarat on Wednesday after she created a “freedom day” event on Facebook calling for people to protest against the Victorian government’s lockdown measures. “As some of you may have seen the government has gone to extreme measures and are using scare tactics through the media to prevent the Melbourne protest,” the now-deleted event description read. NASA patented a faster, cheaper route to the moon. The first spacecraft to use it could make Nobel Prize-winning discoveries about the universe. The moon is both seductively close to Earth and cosmically far away: Decades after the end of the space race, it remains extraordinarily expensive and difficult to actually get there. The journey just got a bit easier, however, thanks to a freshly published NASA invention. The agency's patent doesn't cover a new piece of equipment or lines of code, but a trajectory — a route designed to save a lunar-bound mission time, fuel, and money and boost its scientific value. Some see age-old playbook in new Tennessee protest law NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- Tennessee now leads the nation in criminalizing common protest tactics, with penalties including the denial of voting rights for pitching a tent on the Capitol grounds. But outrage over racial injustice isn't going away, and civil rights advocates say the law was pulled from an age-old playbook that hasn't stood up to history. --- Support this podcast:

The Trump administration said on Tuesday that it will ban evictions of tenants who are unable to pay rent because of the coronavirus crisis through the end of the year with a broad new order under the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s public health powers. The agency order, the result of an Aug. 8 executive action by President Donald Trump directing the CDC to study the issue, would impose criminal penalties on landlords who violate the ban. Evictions for reasons other than nonpayment of rent will be allowed to proceed. Trump moves to ban evictions nationwide through December Exclusive: GOP Senators Ask the FDA to Classify the Abortion Pill as Dangerous This afternoon, a group of 20 Republican senators, led by Texas senator Ted Cruz, sent a letter to the Food and Drug Administration, calling on Commissioner Stephen Hahn to “classify the abortion pill as an ‘imminent hazard to the public health’ that poses a ‘significant threat of danger’ and remove this pill from the U.S. market.” ABC News: DHS withheld intelligence bulletin warning about Russian misinformation attack on Biden's mental health (CNN)The Department of Homeland Security in July withheld an intelligence bulletin warning of a Russian plot to spread misinformation regarding Joe Biden's mental health, according to a report from ABC News on Wednesday. Seattle Gets a Brand New Auto-Zone || EP266 SEE IT: Protesters Set Up ‘Autonomous Zone’ In Seattle After Police Retreat, Take Over 6 Blocks Around Shuttered Precinct Thanks Ben The protest situation in Seattle has reached a new level of chaos after the Seattle Police, seeking “deescalation,” retreated from a now-boarded up East Precinct building, allowing radical protesters to set up what they’ve declared “The Capitol Hill Autonomous Zone” that encompasses several blocks of the city. After a showdown between left-wing rioters and police on Sunday, Democratic Seattle Mayor Jenny Durkan announced late Monday an effort to “de-escalate” the situation by ordering the police to pull out of the East Precinct. THE DEMANDS OF THE COLLECTIVE BLACK VOICES AT FREE CAPITOL HILL TO THE GOVERNMENT OF SEATTLE, WASHINGTON In credit to the people who freed Capitol Hill, this list of demands is neither brief nor simplistic. This is no simple request to end police brutality. We demand that the City Council and the Mayor, whoever that may be, implement these policy changes for the cultural and historic advancement of the City of Seattle, and to ease the struggles of its people. This document is to represent the black voices who spoke in victory at the top of 12th & Pine after 9 days of peaceful protest while under constant nightly attack from the Seattle Police Department. These are words from that night, June 8th, 2020. For ease of consideration, we’ve broken these demands into four categories: The Justice System, Health and Human Services, Economics, and Education. Given the historical moment, we’ll begin with our demands pertaining to the Justice System. --- Support this podcast:

#DumbBleep of the Week! Elon Musk is on the Lis... Unemployment Rate Shocks Wall Street, Drops To 13.3% — Biggest One-Month Job Gain Since 1939 The U.S. unemployment rate shocked economists on Wall Street, dropping to 13.3% for the month of May. Dow Jones experts had predicted the rate would soar to 19.5% with another 8 million jobs lost, but the economists weren’t even close. The economy actually created more than 2.5 million jobs in May, the Labor Department reported. The May gain was by far the biggest one-month jobs gain in U.S. history since at least 1939. Supreme Court may consider making it easier to sue police for misconduct WASHINGTON — As calls grow nationwide for reforms in law enforcement following the death of George Floyd, the Supreme Court will soon announce if it will jump into the debate by considering whether it should be easier to sue police for serious misconduct. Law enforcement officers who behave badly are rarely prosecuted, so lawsuits brought by victims of misconduct are often the only way to hold them accountable. And there's no other way for victims to get compensation for a violation of their rights. But a string of decisions by the Supreme Court has made it very difficult for victims to win in court. When Things Fall Apart: To Mend Our Social Fabric, These Are the Principles That Must Guide Us From lockdowns, to police brutality, to riots, only a principled approach can make things better. Worries race through one’s mind. How could things have gone so out of control so quickly? Young people just starting out in life wonder how they will get by. Parents wonder what kind of lives their children will have in such a world. Will they be able to prosper? Will they even be safe from violence? Is This an Insurrection? || EP 260

Trump went from freedom fighter to authoritarian in about a week

(CNN)The moment was made for TV. With a protest just beyond the White House complex, President Donald Trump made a last-minute decision to give a brief address asserting his authority to impose order on US streets -- then departed the White House and walked across a zone freshly cleared by mounted police, to stand with a Bible outside St. John's Church across Lafayette Square.

The church had suffered damage in a fire Sunday night. Bishop Mariann Edgar Budde of the Episcopal Diocese of Washington said after Trump's walk that she was "outraged."

"I am outraged. The President did not pray when he came to St. John's, nor as you just articulated, did he acknowledge the agony of our country right now," Budde told CNN's Anderson Cooper on "AC360."

Tear gas in the capital -- With a haze of tear gas and police pushing back protesters on the north side of the White House, Trump said in the Rose Garden on the south side of the building that he'd call up US troops to keep Americans safe from each other.

Pushing back protesters on cue -- Moments before he spoke, police had advanced on live TV to disperse peaceful protesters, some kneeling with their hands up, creating an image of unrest where none had existed.

Rule of law -- Earlier, with barely a nod to the police brutality that had sparked the demonstrations, Trump promised a strict rule-of-law response, called smatterings of violence that sprang from large protests "domestic terror" and said he would bring "thousands and thousands of heavily armed soldiers" to help strictly enforce curfews on federal land in DC.

The Insurrection Act --

While he stopped short of invoking an 1807 law -- the Insurrection Act -- to call up federal troops to US cities, he kept the option open and recommended governors call up even more National Guard troops. Tens of thousands have already been called up for both coronavirus and civil unrest. (Note: That 1807 law was most notably used by Republicans and Democratic presidents in the 1960s to force desegregation. Trump would be using it to squelch calls for social justice. So we have evolved).
--- Support this podcast:
