The Pantheon of Rock - Ep433
We have a big announcement this week in an episode we're calling The Pantheon of Rock! In the nearly ten year history of Decibel Geek, we've been approached by several podcasting networks. While the offers were tempting, we've always shied away. However, we recently were approached by the Pantheon Podcast Network and, after a productive conference call and the possibilities of growing the show and offering more to our listeners, we've accepted their invite. This week Pantheon Podcast Network founders Christian Swain and Peter Ferioli join us to talk about Decibel Geek joining the network. Additionally, you'll hear more about the network and the great collection of music podcasts that are a part of it including our friends at Rock and/or Roll, The Hustle, Should It Out Loudcast, and many more. The network also has great shows by rock author Martin Popoff and the legendary Pamela DesBarres among many others. Christian and Peter also share some entertaining stories of their musical background including concert memories. Our involvement with Pantheon will not a change a thing for the Decibel Geek listeners. We still have free reign to do the show that we want to do and we look forward to working with them in the future to improve your experience as well as to interact with the other shows on the network. New Noize v12 - Ep431
We're back this week to cover all the rock news that's fit to spit with New Noize v12! In a dark, crazy year there's still some interesting stuff going on in the rock and metal world and we're here to talk about it! AC/DC has electrified the music world again with the release of Power Up; a 12 track slab of new rock for your ears. This album has been getting rave reviews across the world. What do we think about it? Is it among the band's best? Listen and find out as we review the record. Wolfgang Van Halen made headlines this week in a series of interviews amidst the release of two new tracks; 'The Distance' is a touching tribute to his recently departed father Eddie. The accompanying video has helped raise Kleenex stock all over the world. Another track, 'You're to Blame' shows some diversity from the rising star; using the moniker Mammoth WVH. We share our thoughts on the songs as well as what we think of the revelations brought out during these new interviews. Other topics covered this week include new and upcoming releases from Alice Cooper, Armored Saint, LA Guns, Jesper Binzer, Soul Station, and Jason Bieler among others. We also touch on our thoughts on the upcoming Stryper livestream in which they'll perform the entire new 'Even the Devil Believes' album. Rock Mag '87 - Ep428
We return this week with a blast from the past with Rock Mag '87. In the 80's, one of the only sources of rock news and information were magazines. Rock magazine titans of the 80's included Metal Edge, Circus, and Hit Parader. In June of 1987, Hit Parader released their supersized anniversary issue. Featuring Ozzy Osbourne and Randy Rhoads on the cover, this giant issue is a great time capsule of a magical time in rock and metal music. In this episode, we scan through the magazine and share our thoughts on several of the stories. Some of the news items, rumors, and letters to the editor are pretty entertaining in hindsight. Topics covered include Steven Pearcy, Whitesnake, Autograph, Black Sabbath, David Lee Roth, KIX, Ace Frehley, Megadeth, Rob Halford, Eric Carr, and tons more! KISS and Philosophy - Ep427
We're getting cerebral this week while talking about the hottest band in the land as we chat with the authors of KISS and Philosophy; a book that seeks to enlighten you in a rock and roll way. On the surface, you'd probably think that KISS songs are simply about groupies and having fun. To a point, you'd be right. However, as this book seeks to prove, there are a lot of poignant statements made throughout KISS' lyrical history. Editor Court Lewis and contributor Matt Alschbach (along with others) provide an interesting case study in the ways that KISS' music parallels philosophy by Socrates, Plato, Aristotle, and more. Don't worry, this is no stuffy read; it's written for the layman and carries some great humor throughout. Plus, these guys are died-in-the-wool KISS fans and you'll get lots of cool nuggets throughout. In this discussion, Matt and Court share their personal KISStories as well as help explain the main points of the book. We had a great time talking to these guys and know you will enjoy listening.  You can pick up KISS and Philosophy: Wiser Than Hell at most major book retailers or direct from Amazon at https://www.amazon.com/KISS-Philosophy-Popular-Culture/dp/0812694910 We hope you enjoy our talk on KISS and Philosophy and SHARE with a friend! Remembering EVH - Ep426
With the sad news this week of a legends passing, this week we are Remembering EVH. Eddie Van Halen passed away from cancer this week at age 65. The news shook the world impacted us personally. To help process this information, we decided to go live on Youtube and Facebook. It was a cathartic chat between ourselves and several guests that joined us. Additionally, a large number of viewers shared their thoughts in the comments; many of which we reacted to. Guests that joined us for this live tribute included Bakko from Cobras and Fire Podcast, JTB from JTB's Groovy Record Room, Ian Wadley, Rockin' Ron Runyon from Decibel Geek TV, Greg Mangus, and Toddzilla. The void left by Eddie Van Halen is impossible to fill but we're appreciative of the decades of amazing music he left behind. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and friends during this difficult time. We hope you enjoy the replay of our livestream of Remembering EVH and share with a friend. Contact Us! Conversation with Mike Fraser - Ep422
This week we bring you our in-depth chat with producer & engineer Mike Fraser. Mike's credit list is a Who's Who of rock and metal music. In this conversation, we talk to Mike about many of his notable projects. Getting his start at the legendary Little Mountain Studios in Vancouver in the early 80's, Mike Fraser was in good company right away; working with such production greats as Bob Rock and Bruce Fairbairn among many others. From his early days working on projects such as Rush's Exit...Stage Left, Brian Adams' Reckless, and Loverboy's Notorious, Mike got his feet wet quickly on quality albums. Things would go up a notch in 1987 with Aerosmith's Permanent Vacation. Fraser, Rock, and Fairbairn would collaborate on the making of this comeback album from the Bad Boys from Boston. In this episode, Mike shares some cool behind the scenes stories about making of the album and working with the members of the band during big change in their lives. Mike also reflects on the making of the Pump album that would come out in 1989 and how the experience differed from the previous one. Another pair of albums of great interest to Decibel Geek listener are from the short-lived supergroup Blue Murder. In this conversation, Mike shares his thoughts on working with the band and his opinion on its material. Additionally, Mike Fraser has worked on 5 AC/DC albums starting with 1989's The Razors Edge. In this chat, Mike discusses what it's like working for such a legendary band, their personalities, and more. There have been rumors that AC/DC have recently been in Vancouver working on an album. Does Mike shed any light on these rumors? We asked, you'll have to listen to hear his answer. Other artists discussed include Dan Reed Network, Bad English, The Cult, Thunder, Coverdale/Page, Dio, Metallica and more! We truly thank Mike Fraser for joining us this week and can't wait to have him back on in the future! We hope you enjoy our Conversation with Mike Fraser and SHARE with a friend! Contact Us! Brush with Greatness - Ep421
We try out something new as some of friends share their stories of a Brush with Greatness! In today's world of pre-planned, prepaid meet and greets, it's hard to find very many memorable stories of encounters with artists. This new series endeavors to talk to friends of ours that had genuine encounters (good and bad) with the artists. Joining us first today is voiceover artist and radio deejay Jeff Cecil. Jeff goes way back with Aaron Camaro to his radio days in the 90's. In this talk, Jeff and Aaron reflect on the old days and talk about run-ins with William Duvall of Alice in Chains, Ivan Moody of Five Finger Death Punch, and David Lee Roth among others. Up next is drummer Richie Rivera. Richie is a veteran gun-f0r-hire who also plays for Janet Gardner (formerly of Vixen). Richie truly brought it this week with a truly entertaining story about a meeting with Rick James. It must be heard to be believed! Rounding out today's show is music industry member and publicist Dave Tedder. Today, Dave shares a story going back to the 80's that involves a chance meeting with Dokken in Germany and how it relates to their video for 'In My Dreams.' Pretty interesting stuff! *Note* - If you think YOU have a great story that could be shared of your Brush with Greatness, be sure to leave the name of the artist involved in the comments section! Camaro's Cutout Bin - Ep419
This week we're back with the third installment of Camaro's Cutout Bin! What is Camaro's Cutout Bin? Our host-with-the-most, Aaron Camaro, has a penchant for digging for musical gold in the form of CD's. He regularly combs through record stores, thrift stores, yard sales, etc for great rock and metal. He sometimes finds great stuff from classic bands but often finds relatively obscure bands of which many may have missed the boat. The band name, album name, or cover may speak to him as something that potentially "rocks." What are the results? Listen this week and find out if these ten selected albums made the cut! In this edition of the cutout bin, you'll hear tracks from Electric Frankenstein, Penicillin, Two-Bit Thief, Jesse's Powertrip, The Power Trio from Hell, The Camaros, Jet Circus, Ambush, and Radiovipers. Aaron and Chris go over the bands, their stories, and check out some of the music. Does it rock? Did it make Aaron's playlist? You'll have to listen to find out! KISS Top 10 Bottom 10 - Ep415
We welcome back Bakko from the Cobras and Fire podcast to join us as we list our KISS Top 10 Bottom 10! In addition to his hosting duties, Bakko has been a longtime writer for the Decibel Geek website. Recently, he put out an article ranking every song in the KISS catalog; not an easy feat! As with most lists, it's reflective of the writer's personal take and we had our share of differences with his list. So, we figured the best way to rectify the situation was to bring him on and give our Top 10 and Bottom 10 KISS songs while going over his list as well. Would we agree? Would there be verbal bashing? Honestly, due to the amount of beer consumed in this episode, we don't really remember! Additionally, Bakko takes on Chris in a rematch of Beat the Geek hosted by Aaron Camaro! Did Chris get embarrassed? Did Bakko get crowned? As said previously, we don't remember so join us and find out! We hope you enjoy KISS Top 10 Bottom 10 and SHARE with a friend! Road Stories with Barry Ackom - Ep414
Former KISS guitar tech Barry Ackom joins us this week to share some incredible KISS Road Stories! Hired on to work for the band during the Alive! tour, Barry would pull double duty doing guitar tech work for both Paul Stanley and Ace Frehley. His tenure with The Hottest Band in the Land lasted through Alive II around 1978. Barry had a front row seat to the fast ascent of KISS and was a part of numerous landmark moments in the band's zenith. We barely scratched the surface in this entertaining chat but touch on topics such as the sold out 3 night run at Cobo Hall in 1976, the Anaheim Stadium show, the making of Destroyer, and KISS Meets the Phantom of the Park! Other subjects covered include a hilarious story of a barefoot Ace Frehley in Sweden, Ace getting shocked in Lakeland, Florida, and the subsequent use of wireless gear. Also, Barry shares how his Chicago-area band Lois Lane was almost a farm club for KISS replacement members. It's an hour-plus of great stories told by a man that witnessed the magic of KISS first-hand. We hope you enjoy Road Stories with Barry Ackom and SHARE with a friend Merry KISSmas in July! The Classic Metal Show has been in existence for over 25 year and, in that time, entertained and offended a lot of people.   There are no punches pulled and opinions are doled out mercilessly. Chris Akin's background in radio pushed him into the field of "new media" in the 90's and has led to the success of the CMS to this day. Also of note, are Chris' many books on the subject of rock and metal. You can follow past and future book releases at https://www.facebook.com/chrisakinbooks/https://www.facebook.com/chrisakinbooks/   In this week's Quarantine Sessions Vol15, Chris Akin joins us to answer YOUR listener-submitted questions. Topics touched on this week include Frank Zappa, Hulk Hogan, Woodstock, favorite actors, Pringles, Bret Michaels stories, games shows, Deftones, box sets, crazy concert stories, Nu-Metal, terrible opening acts, drinking songs, Nita Strauss and much more!   Rounding things off is another rousing edition of Beat the Geek hosted by Aaron Camaro! Did Chris Akin dethrone Chris Czynszak? You'll have to listen to find out!   We hope you enjoy The Quarantine Sessions Vol15 and SHARE with a friend!   Contact Us!
