Heaven - Ep152
The guys are back from a week that nearly put Aaron Camaro out of commission and into recovery. After a health scare of pre-pneumonia, Aaron is back to help Chris tackle this week's subject; and is it ever a doozy.   This week the guys cover the first half of two very common subjects in songwriting; Heaven and Hell. Rock and metal bands have written about these subjects for decades and that only stands to continue in the future. This week Aaron and Chris spin some of their favorite tracks about the great beyond that is Heaven. Radio Sucks volume 18 - Ep149
After a full month of covering KISS and the second half of an Anthrax career/discography discussion, Aaron and Chris are ready for a week of their favorite format; no format!   We return this week with volume 18 of the Radio Sucks Radio Show. If you’re new to the show, the idea behind this format is simple. We play great songs by great artists that rarely, if ever, get radio play. Corporate stations can waste your time with advertisements and the same 10 songs every hour. This week we’re breaking out awesome deep cuts from W.A.S.P., Alice Cooper, Angel, Ugly Kid Joe, Nazareth, Heavens Edge, and LA Guns. We’re also playing brand new stuff from Judas Priest and Sixx A.M. On top of that we, honor the late great Dick Wagner at the top of the show. Lots to sink your audio teeth into!   Buy Music! Anthrax Discussion Part 2 - Ep148
After a jam-packed KISSMAS in July, we're back this week for the second half of our Anthrax discussion with special guest Victor M. Ruiz from Mars Attacks and Talking Metal.   In this long-form discussion Chris, Aaron, and Victor dissect the second decade of the Anthrax story. Starting with 1993's 'Sound of White Noise' and going all the way through 2013's 'Anthems' EP, there was a lot of change in the Anthrax camp. What started out as a new life with former Armored Saint front man John Bush would lead to an interesting game of musical chairs over the years and would ultimately result in the return of Joey Belladonna.   In part 2 of this Anthrax career discussion, your hosts share their thoughts on the musical and personnel choices made by the band in the past 10 years. Was 'Sound of White Noise' a stab at being a grunge band? Did 'Stomp 442' have no chance at equaling the success of 'White Noise'? Was Bush's more serious side pushing out the youthful and humorous spirit of the Belladonna-era?   Other topics touched upon in this coversation are the behind the scenes power moves that have taken place, trouble with record companies, surviving an American tragedy, and unsung heroes in the Anthrax alumni.   It's a fun, thoughtful discussion and not everyone agrees with the choices made. We'd like to hear YOUR take on all of this and you can give it to us by any means listed in the Contact Us section below.   Buy Music! Conversation with Ken Barr - Ep145
Some of the most memorable KISS discussions we've had are the ones we've conducted with crew members. This week's guest should prove to continue that tradition.   Former KISS crew member Ken Barr joins Chris and Aaron this week for an in-depth discussion of a very transitional phase in the Hottest Band in the Land's career. Ken was a drum tech/guitar tech/carpenter for KISS from 1992 - 1996. His tenure included the Revenge tour, Alive III, the 1995 convention tour, MTV Unplugged, Reunion tour rehearsals, and the 1996 KROQ Weenie Roast. Lots of stories about the personalities behind the members of KISS, stories from the road, and Ken's thoughts on what the band is doing today.   Our talk with Ken today is just the tip of the iceberg of experiences that he's had throughout his career in the music industry. Conversation with Sher Bach
This week we kick of the 2014 edition of KISSMAS in July. During these next four weeks we'll be focusing solely on KISS-releated episodes and talking to KISS-related guests; and today's is a good one!   Sher Bach has been in close quarters with the Hottest Band in the Land during different eras of their storied career. Sher was married to a member of NY glitter scene contemporaries The Harlots of 42nd Street. She was also a performer in her own right; working with another New York act; Ruby & the Rednecks. In this long-form discussion, Sher details her memories of the rock scene at the time including her attendance at pivotal shows in KISS' career at venues such as Coventry and the Hotel Diplomat.   A few years later, KISS was on top of the world and churning out enough anthems, toys, and belt buckles to satisfy the population. Her longtime friendship to KISS manager Bill Aucoin strengthened in 1977 when she went to work for Aucoin Management.  Bill Aucoin   In this discussion, Sher gives details of what it was like to work on the business side of the entertainment industry and how it, pardon the pun, mirrored the rock and roll side in many ways. She also shares her thoughts on how the excesses caught up to Aucoin and cracks started to appear on the surface of the Madison Avenue money machine.   After a couple of shifts in employment, Sher Bach would wind up working in Puerto Rico in the 1980's. In this discussion, she tells Aaron and Chris about KISS' visit to the country during that time, her impressions of Eric Carr, and an interesting story involving Paul Stanley jamming at a small bar.   The Decibel Geek podcast would like to thank Sher Bach for so many great stories from her time around KISS and appreciate her candor.    Sher Bach currently works with Malla Entertainment Group.    Buy Music!   KISS   Contact Us!   Rate, Review, and Subscribe in iTunes Join the Facebook Fan Page Follow on Twitter Follow on Instagram E-mail Us Call us on the Hotline! Anthrax Discussion Part 1 - Ep143
Chris and Aaron tend to differ on many of the bands that they like. The dichotomy of those tastes have helped broaden their own musical palette over the course of doing this show. But one band that they both agree on is Anthrax.   This week Chris and Aaron are joined by Mars Attacks and Talking Metal host Victor M. Ruiz for a discussion of the first decade of Anthrax (1981-1992). In this discussion Chris, Aaron, and Victor go through the anthrax discography from their Neil Turbin-fronted debut, Fistful of Metal, through the final release of the Joey Belladonna era; Attack of the Killer B's.   Also included in this in-depth discussion are clips from the hosts favorite songs from albums of this era including Spreading the Disease, Persistence of Time, and the genre-bending I'm the Man EP among others.   Other topics covered in part 1 of this Anthrax discussion include rumors that Eddie Trunk was a key player in the removal of Neil Turbin as lead vocalist, touring troubles brought on by numerous problems including the death of Metallica's Cliff Burton, and the strange shared touring bill that had Anthrax opening up arena shows for KISS at their poppiest.   From the straight-ahead sound of Metal Thrashing Mad to their adventures into rap and hip hop with their cover of 'Bring the Noise,' Anthrax made a lot of movement during this first decade and we do our best to cover it all.   DISCLAIMER: Yes, we know that KISSMAS in July is starting next week. Never fear, part 2 of this discussion will be released during the first week of August.   Buy Music!   Anthrax   More Victor!   Mars Attacks Talking Metal   Geeks of the Week:   Wayne Newburn, Robert Foster, Jason Thomas Broadrick, Joe Lascon, Wally Norton, Ben Mitchell, Andrew Jacobs, Scott Yeager, Heavy Rock, Jimmy Mercer, Kal Hinz, Paul Korn, Robert De Pasqua, Billy Hardaway, Brad Kalmanson, I am Hoops, PJ Brown, Chuck Speer, Lee Maslin (Audio Junkies Podcast), Justin Hayes, Brent Walter, Matt Syverson (Paperback Rocker Podcast), Mike Stewart, Joe Royland (Sit and Spin with Joe), George Savastano, PodofThunder, Darryl Alber, Derik Novak, Helix the Band, Hard Rock Dad, MusicMagsAndWax,     Contact Us!   Rate, Review, and Subscribe in iTunes Join the Facebook Fan Page Follow on Twitter Follow on Instagram E-mail Us Call us on the Hotline! Conversation with Chuck Garric - Ep139
Chuck Garric is no stranger to large crowds and big tours. His bass duties for such rock and metal legends as Dio, LA Guns, and Alice Cooper have given him quite a resume. But one thing that stays the same after playing in front of millions of people over the years; Chuck Garric is still the same music fan he was as a kid.   When not on tour, Garric resides in Nashville, TN as part of the long line of rockers that have made their way to the Southeastern hotbed of music. On a random weeknight you can see Chuck, along with members/ex-members of Motley Crue, Thin Lizzy, Accept and many others jamming out to some of the songs that got them hooked on rock and roll in their early years.   Aaron and Chris were fortunate enough to grab a coffee with Chuck just before he left for Europe to hit some big festivals with Alice Cooper as well as gearing up to co-headline with Motley Crue on their final tour.   In this discussion, Chuck goes back to his Lake Tahoe, CA roots to describe his musical upbringing, the awesomeness of Ted Nugent, his thoughts on American vs. European audiences, and the likelihood of Alice breaking the drought of DaDa songs in the setlist among other things.   For all things Beasto Blanco (including how to purchase the album) go to: www.livefastdieloud.com   Follow Chuck on Twitter @BeastoBlanco   Buy Music!   Alice Cooper Beasto Blanco Ted Nugent   Contact Us!   Rate, Review, and Subscribe in iTunes Join the FacebookFan Page Follow on Twitter Follow onInstagram E-mail Us Call us on theHotline! Conversation with Killer Dwarfs - Ep137
Last week Aaron Camaro went solo with his one on one talk with Mike Tramp. This week Chris decides to strike out on his own with an in-person hangout with some legends of the Great White North.   The Killer Dwarfs were spending a day in Nashville at Sirius Hair Nation deejay Luc Carl’s “metal farm” and Chris took the opportunity to hang out and pester the guys with a microphone between beers. What you’ll hear in the first half of this episode is Chris (and writer Billy Hardaway) hanging out on a patio with the Dwarfs and Luc Carl while chatting about an assortment of stuff including their mutual love for Alice Cooper, touring with Saxon in the 80’s, and what happened to that can of Cuddly Cola from the ‘We Stand Alone’ video.   The second half of the show features a one on one talk that Chris has with Darrell about his time with the band Laidlaw, his other band Automan, getting back together with the Dwarfs, sharing a studio with KISS in 1992 and what Dwarfs fans can expect on their current tour in support of their Start @ One album.   Geeks of the Week:   Twitter: DJ Novak, Jaime Tigertailz, Jay Arnold, Stuart Brown   Facebook:   Joe Lascon, Todd Cunningham, Lee Maslin (Audio Junkies), Robert De Pasqua, Andy Lafon, Billy Hardaway, Derik Novak, Dave Shirt, Brent Walter, Scott Yeager, JTB’s Groovy Record Room, Shane Hebert, Rodney Dickson   Become a Geek of the Week by sharing this link on Facebook or retweeting it on Twitter! Conversation with Mike Tramp - Ep 136
It's been 27 years since White Lion broke through into the public consciousness with 1987's 'Pride' album. Featuring a solid rhythm section of bassist James Lomenzo and drummer Greg D'Angelo joining virtuoso guitarist Vito Bratta, the band was fronted by a platinum blonde singer that not only had the right look for the era but also had a damn good singing voice that would reverberate through arenas across the world during the late 80's glam rock takeover. That singer is Mike Tramp.   The Danish-born front man fronted White Lion through a very successful run of albums from the previously-mentioned 'Pride' album through 1991's 'Mane Attraction.' The Seattle grunge movement eventually commanded a bigger spotlight and bands of White Lion's ilk were pushed aside; but Mike Tramp perservered, going on to form Freak of Nature and then release eight solo albums with 2013's 'Cobblestone Street ' being his most recent.   Mike Tramp has been on a US tour in 2014. Aided by only his guitar and a son he's been reconnecting with, Tramp is bringing an intimate experience for fans that includes White Lion classics and solo selections. Mike was nice enough to spend some time during his stop at the Rutledge in Nashville, TN talking to Aaron Camaro about the tour, the old days, and what it was like to be a part of the shifting sands of the early 1990's. Also included is a chat with two Mike Tramp die-hard fans about their expectations for the show as well as some of their favorite tracks from Tramp and White Lion.   The Decibel Geek podcast would like to thank The Rutledge LMV for their help in facilitating this interview.   Buy Music!   White Lion Mike Tramp   More Mike Tramp!   Official Website Facebok Fan Page  Twitter Page   Contact Us!   Rate, Review, and Subscribe in iTunes Join the Facebook Fan Page Follow on Twitter Follow on Instagram E-mail Us Call us on the Hotline! Joining us for this discussion is drummer Andre Labelle of The Sky. Andre was tapped by Vinnie to drum on the still-not-officially released album Guitars from Hell that was recorded over a period of 1989 through 1992. In this discussion you'll hear the whole story of how the project was started, the interesting ways that Vinnie would decide on equipment, recording techniques, and the circumstances that led to the album being shelved.   During this discussion Andre also shares some interesting insight into Vinnie's brief reconciliation with Paul Stanley and Gene Simmons and his work with them on the then-in-production 'Revenge' album as well as Vinnie's influence going beyond the songwriting for the album.   Guitars from Hell has leaked in-part online over the past few years in the form of rough demos; many of which feature Vincent re-recording all the tracks using a drum machine in Labelle's place. In this discussion, Andre shares his feelings about this and confirms that more than the 8 leaked songs do exist. Fan-created artwork   Along with Andre, the Guitars from Hell album featured the return of original Vinnie Vincent Invasion vocalist  and current Sky front man Robert Fleischman. During this talk, Andre shares the working dynamic between the vocalist and guitarist and how things didn't always go very smoothly yet still yielded an incredible technical performance out of all parties.   The Sky recently released their second full-length album, 'Majestic.' The band is rounded out by bassist Steve Barber and guitarist Ryan Lake.     As we did in part 3 of the Vinnie Vincent Special with Robert Fleischman, all music clips in the epiosde come from the 'Majestic' album. Albums Unleashed - DaDa with Dick Wagner Ep134
This week Aaron and Chris launch the first installment of a brand new series for the Decibel Geek podcast with Albums Unleashed. The stories behind the songs, circumstances, and creative process from a major player in an album's creation. And to start things off, we're covering Alice Cooper's DaDa album with special guest Dick Wagner.   Released in 1983, DaDa was, for all intents and purposes, dead on arrival due to being the final album in Cooper's contract with Warner Brothers as well as the out-of-the-box style of songs. Part art-rock, part esoteric/theatrical concept, DaDa's synthesizer-infused production combined with a healthy amount of humor crossed with dark subject matter left 1983 audiences confused; and they weren't the only ones.   The early 80's were a self-professed "blackout" period for Alice Cooper with the rocker going as far as saying that he barely even remembers the songwriting process or production of this album. Cooper's lack of recollection has led many die-hard Cooper fans to create their own theories as to the concept behind DaDa. Guitarist/composer Dick Wagner, a longtime collaborator of Alice's, was the principal songwriter on this album and was kind enough, while in Nashville in May of 2014, to sit down with Aaron and Chris to discuss the entire album track by track and memory by memory.   In this discussion, Wagner shares his memories of the difficult  that led to getting Alice to come to ESP Studios in Buttonville Ontario from his Pheonix home to join he and producer Bob Ezrin in the making of DaDa. Alice's alcohol abuse hit record highs during this period and Dick shares his recollections of their songwriting and recording process that led to the songs on the album.   From the creepy title track's intro that features producer Ezrin aping a psychiatrist talking to Cooper as DaDa's featured character over a bed of strange reverberating sounds and the voice of a child calling out for its father to the dark tale of self-destructive realization that is album closer 'Pass the Gun Around,' Wagner tells the story of the album's basic concept. Alice during DaDa SeesionsESP Studios Buttonville, Ontariocopyright 2007 johnjones.com   During this in-depth discussion of 1983's DaDa, Dick Wagner reveals the inspiration for the man-in-the-attic track 'Former Lee Warmer' and how, while it has horror opera feel, it's true roots lie in a bad business realtionship with Alice's record label.   A fantastic fan-created theory of the albums concept and storyline was written online in 2008 for Ultimate-Guitar.com by a user named madpaperboy89. Aaron and Chris were so intrigued by the review that they read parts of it to Dick to get his take on it. As you'll hear in the discussion, the writer was spot-on in parts. MCI ConsoleESP Studios Buttonville, Ontariocopyright 2007 johnjones.com   As you'll hear in this installment of Albums Unleashed, DaDa still holds a very special place in Dick Wagner's heart and it's finally earning some much-deserved attention after all these years.             Buy Music!   Alice Cooper - Dada Dick Wagner Amazon Store Buy Dick Wagner's Book - NOT ONLY WOMEN BLEED   Dick Wagner Facebook Group   Contact Us!   Rate, Review, and Subscribe in iTunes Join the Facebook Fan Page Follow on Twitter Follow on Instagram E-mail Us   Call us on the Hotline! (540) DBGeek - 1 or (540) 324-3351   Support Us! For a certain segment of the population, April 20th is a very significant day. If you don't partake of a sticky green plant that has certain psychological stimulating qualities, you don't know what I'm talking about.   This week Aaron and Chris celebrate 420 in the most fitting Decibel Geek way; by spinning some of their favorite rocking songs that pay tribute to the enjoyment of ganja (aka marijuana). Monsters of Rock Cruise Memories - Episode 132
Every year, the high seas get rocked a little harder during this time of year and 2014 was no exception. The Monsters of Rock Cruise featured around 40 Decibel Geek-worth artists performing rotating sets in the Bahamas aboard the massive MSC Divina cruise ship and our very own Rich "The Meister" Dillon was on board to take it all in.   Rich "Meister" Dillon came through Nashville on his way back from the Monsters of Rock cruise to join Aaron, Chris, and Decibel Geek writer Andy Lafon for a discussion of all of the music, atmosphere, and debauchery that took place on the high seas. Underscoring this conversation is music from artists aboard the ship such as Cinderella, Killer Dwarfs, Winger, Red Dragon Cartel, and a bunch more. Bracket Buster - Episode 131
If you're anywhere near America during this time of year, the term "March Madness" seems to permeate the air. The NCAA basketball tournament becomes the sports centerpiece for the entire month of March and sports and non-sports fans escape into office pools of their own brackets in an attempt to prove their sports knowledge. The musical equivalent of this takes place on (crappy) radio stations across the land; with stations assigning bands in the bracket spots and letting listeners vote on who should be crowned the champ.    This week Aaron and Chris take a rock band bracket list and go head-to-head in a discussion/argument over what happens when you pit these bands against each other. Some of these matchups and picks will anger you, make you laugh, question our sanity. Either way, it's a fun, laid-back talk between Aaron and Chris and more indisputable evidence that radio absolutely, positively sucks.   Geeks of the Week: Facebook: Matt Ashcraft, Todd Cunningham, Chris Karam, Rick Shaw, Derik Novak, Patrick Johnson, Brian N Shawna Evans, Rodney Dickson, Shane Hebert, Jason Thomas Broadrick   Twitter: Nick Rose (belated), Cassius Morris, Jason Wood, Nonsensicast Radio, Mojo Dave, The Pod Mafia,   BUY MUSIC! Episode 127 - Winter Sucks!
The winter of 2013-2014 has been absolutely brutal in the United States and outlying territories. Worse than that, if feels like it's never going to end! March is here and there are still places that have plenty of snow on the ground. It's enough to make even the most cheerful of Decibel Geeks feel depressed and cry out "Winter Sucks!"   This week we're joined by guest host Mitch Lafon for a discussion of some of our favorite Winter-themed songs (ie. songs with words like "cold", "ice", "frozen" in the title). In this hour-long discussion, Aaron, Chris and Mitch discuss and spin tracks by Cinderella, Aerosmith, Rainbow, London, LA Guns, Metallica and much more to help remedy your cold weather blues. Mitch also shares his reasoning for recently leaving the popular Three Sides of the Coin podcast and lets us in on his plans for the future.   Mitch Lafon on Facebook Mitch Lafon on Youtube   Buy Music! Episode 126 - Judas Priest Discussion
After two weeks of discussing a British Invasion, we decided this week to discuss another kind of British Invasion and Chris and Aaron are joined by Tim Henderson from Bravewords.com for an in-depth discussion of the entire catalog of heavy metal legends Judas Priest.   In this long-form discussion, Aaron, Chris and Tim discuss the recorded output of the iconic Judas Priest catalog; starting with 1974's Rocka Rolla and chronicling each album through 2008's Nostradamus and their hopes for the upcoming album currently being created.   There's a lot of twists and turns in this conversation with each host bringing a different perspective due to differing levels of Priest fandom. We hope die-hard Priest fans enjoy this trip down memory land and we also hope this coversation helps turn on listeners not as familiar with Judas Priest's catalog and hisotry to pick up and discover one of metal's most iconic bands.
