Konversation with Gene Simmons Band
KISSmas in July kicks off with an in-depth talk with members of the Gene Simmons Band. Guitarists Ryan Cook, Jeremy Asbrock, and Philip Shouse have been garnering rave reviews since their debut in March of 2017. Those names should be familiar to Decibel Geek listeners and readers as they've made numerous appearances on the podcast to discuss The Big Rock Show, Hair of the Dog, and Guitar Duos. They are also members of Thee Rock n Roll Residency; a weekly covers show that has been wowing Nashville crowds with its spot-on renditions of classic rock hits and deep cuts. Additionally, Thee Rock n Roll Residency has a rotating cast of musicians that come from all eras of rock history. [caption id="attachment_30090" align="alignright" width="300"] Gene Simmons Band [/caption] The Gene Simmons Band has been impressing die-hard KISS fans at every show on this tour. What started as a six show commitment has turned into a full-on world tour with more dates being released recently. In this conversation, the Gene Simmons Band shares the circumstances that led to them being hired. Moreover, they discuss their personal KISStories and their take on the band's history. One of the bigger reasons for the success of the Gene Simmons Band has been the wealth of deep KISS cuts that are being performed. Songs such as Charisma, Got Love for Sale, and Almost Human among many others have been thrilling KISS fans en masse. In this discussion, the guys tell Chris and Aaron how those songs were chosen as well as what songs have been rehearsed and are possibly going to be included in future setlists. Furthermore, they discuss the upcoming addition of drummer Brent Fitz to the band. Brent is a member of the extended KISS family tree; known for his work in the band Union with Bruce Kulick. Gene Simmons plans to release a massive box set later in 2017. The set is to contain a large amount of demo and unreleased material. In this long-form talk, the guys share some details they've learned about the box set and plans for it. We hope you enjoy Konversation with Gene Simmons Band and SHARE with a friend! Buy Music! Conversation with Donnie Vie - Ep287
Donnie Vie appears on the Decibel Geek Podcast this week for a revealing conversation.  This long-form discussion covers a life and career of ups, downs, triumphs, rejections, celebration, turmoil and ultimately, rediscovery. Vie, known by many as the controversial front man for Chicago greats Enuff Z'nuff has churned out an impressive catalog of work. However, demons (both individually and collectively) seemed to overshadow the band at every step. Shifting musical climates,  substance abuse, changing members, and even death threatened to eliminate Enuff Z'nuff but the band pushed on; eventually without Donnie Vie. It's been an interesting ride to say the least. [caption id="attachment_29797" align="alignright" width="300"] Donnie Vie [/caption] In this long-form discussion, Donnie Vie discusses the band's early days including how he met bassist Chip Z'nuff, his thoughts on late-guitarist Derek Frigo, wild gigs and after-gig activity, and tons more. Additionally, Vie discusses the stories behind many Enuff Z'nuff songs as well as his thoughts on how songwriting credits were given. Also in this long-form talk, Vie discusses his current situation including how he's adapting to his newfound sobriety. Additionally, he sheds light on some interesting projects that he's currently working on both musically and otherwise. It's a deep dive into one of the most unique people to ever appear on the Decibel Geek Podcast. We hope you enjoy Conversation with Donnie Vie and SHARE with a friend! More Donnie Vie! RUSH Covered in Metal - Ep286
Chris & Aaron continue the love-fest for Geddy, Neil, and Alex this week with RUSH Covered in Metal. There are a lot of cover versions of RUSH songs out there by a lot of different artists. What your hosts found out in research for this episode is that there are a lot of bad RUSH covers. However, this week you're gonna get the best gems that they could find in a sea of mediocrity. Clearly, RUSH is a very difficult band to successfully cover. Try to put too much of your own spin on it and you trash what people remember. Try to straight up mimic them and you come off sounding like a poor imitation. This week you'll get harder-edged, unique (but not too unique) renditions of RUSH classics. RUSH Covered in Metal [/caption] RUSH Covered in Metal featured covers performed by Mark Slaughter, George Lynch, Sebastian Bach, Michael Schenker, Skid Row, Machine Head, Local H, Allegaeon, Jani Lane, Billy Talent, and Mindless Self Indulgence. Before the festivities the guys give an update on a tragic situation that befell former guest and friend of the show, Todd "Toddzilla" Austin. The Heavier Side of RUSH - Ep285
Chris & Aaron return this week to discuss The Heavier Side of RUSH; songs that kick a little harder from the legendary Canadian trio. RUSH, formed in 1968, and solidified in 1971 with a lineup of Geddy Lee (bass/vocals), Alex Lifeson (guitar), and John Rutsey (drums) would find aid in manager Ray Danniels and producer Terry Brown. The self-titled 1974 debut album was filled with hard rock numbers reminiscent of Led Zeppelin. The band would ultimately break on the strength of the song 'Working Man' receiving airplay on WMMS in Cleveland. Rutsey, however, would have to retire from the road due to health complications. Enter Neil Peart. The multi-talented drummer had incredible skill not only on the kit but would go on to become the band's principal lyricist. From that point, RUSH carved their own path; releasing trailblazing albums that straddled the worlds of hard and progressive rock; building a rabid following along the way. 40-plus years later and RUSH sit, rightfully, in the upper echelon of rock music history. The Heavier Side of RUSH In this long-form RUSH-themed episode, the guys share their personal take on RUSH's history, their influence, their legacy, and more. They also spin some of their favorite heavier RUSH tunes. Using it as a helpful guide, they also discuss the awesome new RUSH: Album by Album book penned by Martin Popoff and also share how YOU can win a copy! Under the ACDC Influence - Ep284
DBG VIP and Decibel Geek writer, Steven Michael, joins Chris and Aaron for Under the ACDC Influence; a deep dive into bands that were influenced by the Australian hard rock giants. Steve and the guys discuss their love for ACDC, the evidence of their influence on rock and roll history, and spin a bunch of tracks by a bunch of bands that were influenced by Angus Young and company. Many fads come and go, and with them so do many bands. What is the flavor of the week will soon be a punchline to a joke told decades later. ACDC never fell into that trap. Through numerous trends including Prog Rock, Punk Rock, Disco, New Wave, Glam Metal, and Grunge, the Australian-born legends stayed the course; continuing to pump out headbanging, hooky rock n roll. This consistency has produced an influence that has transcended multiple generations of fans. Under the ACDC Influence In this jam packed episode you'll get tracks from Jackyl, Four Horsemen, Voodoo Piston, Ugly Kid Joe, The Treatment, Rhino Bucket, Koritni, Black Aces, Airbourne, Dirty Looks, ACCEPT, Guns N Roses, Rose Tattoo, 77, and Krokus! Albums Unleashed - TUFF What Comes Around with ...
Stevie Rachelle joins the guys this week for Albums Unleashed - TUFF What Comes Around Goes Around. In this long-form discussion, Stevie discusses the circumstances that led to him fronting TUFF. Originally from Wisconsin, Rachelle was bitten by the bug early and headed west to Los Angeles in search of fame. However, it's not instant success. In this talk, Rachelle reflects on his audition with TUFF, what led to his hiring, and the band's rise on the Sunset Strip. TUFF - Albums Unleashed What Comes Around TUFF would slug it out on the Sunset Strip for a while; building their core audience at clubs such as Gazarri's, The Whisky, Perkins Palace, and The Country Club. During this time, they'd be rejected by dozens of labels. Determined, the band would continue to tread the boards on regional tours through the Southern and Midwestern United States until Atlantic Records came calling. What Comes Around Goes Around, released in 1991, was produced by Howard Benson and mixed by Sir Arthur Payson. This episode features some great behind-the-scenes stories. 1982 Year in Review Pt1 - Ep277
The guys go back in time this week as they bring you 1982 Year in Review Pt1. In this long-form trip through the first half of the year, Chris & Aaron cover a lot of ground. 1982 saw some pretty historic beginnings in technology and pop culture including the Commodore 64 and Late Night with David Letterman. 1982 was also a year of loss in the entertainment community. Notably, the losses of John Belushi and Ozzy Osbourne guitarist Randy Rhoads left their mark on the movie and music industries. Speaking of Osbourne, he would cement his status as a controversial figure with two news-making incidents that shocked many. 1982 Year in Review Pt 1 1982 Year in Review Pt1 also boats a lot of great music. The first half of the year included releases from Magnum, Nazareth, UFO, Iron Maiden, Tank, Scorpions, Misfits, Van Halen, Motorhead, Uriah Heep, Cheap Trick, Status Quo, and many more. In this episode, the guys break it all down and cover the sports, movies, and pop culture of 1982. And, as always, classic commercials! Albums Unleashed Poison Look What the Cat Dragg...
Rikki Rockett joins the guys this week for Albums Unleashed Poison Look What the Cat Dragged In. In this long-form discussion, Rikki shares stories from the early days of Poison including the decision to move from Pennsylvania to Hollywood in the early 1980's. Also in the episode, Rikki talks about the departure of original guitarist Matt Smith and an audition process that would go down to a head to head battle between Slash and CC DeVille. In this Albums Unleashed Poison Look What the Cat Dragged In special, Rikki reflects on the recording process of the album. Producer Rick Browde was on board early for the sessions but things got tense quickly due to creative differences. In this episode, Rikki also discusses the struggle to survive in a Hollywood scene that was very unforgiving. Those struggles would be played out lyrically in some of the songs. While the album was recorded on a meager budget and on limited time, it would go on to spawn three big singles and sell 4 million copies worldwide. Albums Unleashed Poison Albums Unleashed Look What the Cat Dragged In also features a track-by-track breakdown of the album including song inspirations and production techniques used. It's an hour-plus of discussion about a remarkable album from a very transitional time in popular music. The Decibel Geek podcast would like to thank Sher Bach, Brandon Gibbs, Kenny Bailey, and the entire Devil City Angels team for their help in securing this interview. Be sure to check out Devil City Angels when they come to your town!  Before we get to the interview, Chris & Aaron give you the inside details of the upcoming Nashville Rock n Pod Expo. Albums Unleashed - Steeler with Rik Fox Ep274
Bassist Rik Fox returns to Decibel Geek this week for Albums Unleashed - Steeler. Fronted by vocalist Ron Keel, Steeler had migrated west from Nashville. Upon his arrival, Keel would realize he needed new players to compete with a burgeoning Sunset Strip scene that included rising stars such as Motley Crue and Quiet Riot. In this long form discussion, Rik shares his memories of auditioning for Steeler, his meeting with drummer Mark Edwards, and the circumstances that would lead to Swedish hotshot guitarist Yngwie Malmsteen joining the band. Upon his arrival, Malmsteen certainly made his presence felt. In this discussion, Rik shares some entertaining stories of the eccentric shredder including a very tense moment in rehearsal between Malmsteen and Keel. Albums Unleashed - Steeler Also in this discussion, Fox shares his personal feelings of the recording process of the Steeler album as well as memories of particular shows on the Sunset Strip. Steeler was a very well-known band in the Hollywood area and would pack clubs regularly. In this long-form talk, Rik recalls a show opening up for Quiet Riot that took place as the Metal Health album was taking off. As the bassist of Steeler, Rik Fox was a member of one of the most pivotal bands in L.A heavy metal history. Steeler, while a popular act of the era that had great songs, did not seem to have the all-for-one-and-one-for-all type of relationship that many other bands had. According to Fox, tensions mounted as the band's popularity began to rise. Issues with Malmsteen's critique of the material and songwriting led to growing tension between the guitarist and Keel. In this discussion, Rik also shares his memories of the end of his version of Steeler including how he was let go from the band. We hope you enjoy Albums Unleashed - Steeler and SHARE with a friend. DBG VIP Joe Becht joins the guys this week for Radio Sucks Radio Show v28. However, in this long-form episode you'll get great songs from Skid Row, Wendy O. Williams, Plasmatics, King's X, Angel, Trouble, Rush, Love/Hate, Cheap Trick, and The Cult. After all, anyone who talks fondly about the Vinnie Vincent Invasion can't be that bad... Needless to say I was hooked after two episodes and have now begun my journey through the archives! I love the open format of the show. Whether they are introducing me to obscure bands and songs I've never heard of before, or giving their own personal insights to the music I grew up with (I'm 43 - so do your own math ;p), each episode has been a fun ride. A few years ago, Gene Simmins claimed "Rock & Roll is dead"... but with guys like the Decibel Geeks serving as Defenders of the Faith, the Spirit of Rock will Keep on Rollin' and give you a Reason to Live! Albums Unleashed All Systems Go w/Bobby Rock - ...
Drummer Bobby Rock joins the guys this week for Albums Unleashed Vinnie Vincent Invasion All Systems Go. In this long-form discussion, Bobby goes into detail on the tour leading up to the recording of this sophomore album; including his recollection of equipment being confiscated due to a pending lawsuit filed by former New England drummer Hirsh Gardner against Vinnie Vincent. A lot of tension was building around the recording of All Systems Go with pressure coming down from Chrysalis label heads pushing for more restrained playing from Vincent. That tension would grow to a boil as label moves and band machinations began to cause a separation between the members of the band. In this long form discussion, Bobby shares his feelings on this pressure as well as how the band reacted to it through the recording process. All Systems Go In this Albums Unleashed special, Bobby Rock discusses the songs on All Systems Go and why certain songs didn't get the push they didn't deserve such as the lack of video for opening track, Ashes to Ashes. Other items discussed include a managerial change in the band during the recording process as well as a tour that was in the works with another guitar hero that fell through. Near the end of the discussion, Bobby is asked about his interest in the off-chance that he'd be asked to be part of an Invasion reunion. His answer might surprise you. Bobby Rock is currently drumming for Lita Ford. You can keep track of Bobby at the links below. We hope you enjoy Albums Unleashed Vinnie Vincent Invasion All Systems Go and SHARE with a friend! Best of 2016 - Ep269
Chris and Aaron return this week to countdown their Top 10 albums of the year that was in Best of 2016 - Ep269. In this 2 hour-plus episode, your hosts find themselves looking back on a year that had many highs as well as lows. The music world lost a ton of talent; causing many to label it the "worst year ever." While those losses certainly stung the guys as well, they prove in this episode that there was a ton of great music released in 2016 including albums from legends such as Metallica, Megadeth, Suicidal Tendencies, and Testament. Best of 2016 Other great releases came from bands such as Volbeat, Tango Down, Crobot, The Dead Daisies, and many, many more. In this long-form episode the guys knock back a few beers and blast out some great rock and metal from the year that was 2016. We hope you enjoy Best of 2016 - Ep269 and SHARE with a friend! They have finally hit their stride! For those of you who don't know, these dudes have been at this podcasting thing for quite some time. They may have changed their names since their original podcasts, but I was able to figure out their ruse. ("Czynszak" - really,... that's the best you could come up with?) You see back in the day, Chirs Sinsack and Aaron Pinto hosted a great YES podcast called "Close to the Edge of Our Lonely Hearts". Unfortunately, it only lasted a couple of episodes, because the shows lasted for 12 hours due to the self-indulgent nature of prog rock. ITunes cyber police pulled it for breaking bandwidth rules and the guys were without a show. A few months later, I stumbled on to a Juice Newton fanatics podcast called "Juice Box" and recognized some familiar voices. However, that show didn't last long either since Aaron kept falling asleep during the taping and because of the fact that there were only 3 listeners (Chris apparently had multiple accounts). Then I heard this fantastic podcast called Decibel Geek that covered all things Hard Rock & Metal (and covered it really well!). Although the names had been changed to protect the innocent, it was definitely Chris & Aaron. These guys do a hell of a job bringing fresh perspectives to the genre and a lot of it's sub-genres in the metal world. On a weekly basis you can expect great interviews, amazing knowledge of the bands & eras and lots of laughs with guys that seem like your friends back home. 5 starz all the way!
