1982 Year in Review Pt1 - Ep277
The guys go back in time this week as they bring you 1982 Year in Review Pt1. In this long-form trip through the first half of the year, Chris & Aaron cover a lot of ground. 1982 saw some pretty historic beginnings in technology and pop culture including the Commodore 64 and Late Night with David Letterman. 1982 was also a year of loss in the entertainment community. Notably, the losses of John Belushi and Ozzy Osbourne guitarist Randy Rhoads left their mark on the movie and music industries. Speaking of Osbourne, he would cement his status as a controversial figure with two news-making incidents that shocked many. 1982 Year in Review Pt 1 1982 Year in Review Pt1 also boats a lot of great music. The first half of the year included releases from Magnum, Nazareth, UFO, Iron Maiden, Tank, Scorpions, Misfits, Van Halen, Motorhead, Uriah Heep, Cheap Trick, Status Quo, and many more. In this episode, the guys break it all down and cover the sports, movies, and pop culture of 1982. And, as always, classic commercials! Albums Unleashed Poison Look What the Cat Dragg...
Rikki Rockett joins the guys this week for Albums Unleashed Poison Look What the Cat Dragged In. In this long-form discussion, Rikki shares stories from the early days of Poison including the decision to move from Pennsylvania to Hollywood in the early 1980's. Also in the episode, Rikki talks about the departure of original guitarist Matt Smith and an audition process that would go down to a head to head battle between Slash and CC DeVille. In this Albums Unleashed Poison Look What the Cat Dragged In special, Rikki reflects on the recording process of the album. Producer Rick Browde was on board early for the sessions but things got tense quickly due to creative differences. In this episode, Rikki also discusses the struggle to survive in a Hollywood scene that was very unforgiving. Those struggles would be played out lyrically in some of the songs. While the album was recorded on a meager budget and on limited time, it would go on to spawn three big singles and sell 4 million copies worldwide. Albums Unleashed Poison Albums Unleashed Look What the Cat Dragged In also features a track-by-track breakdown of the album including song inspirations and production techniques used. It's an hour-plus of discussion about a remarkable album from a very transitional time in popular music. Albums Unleashed - Steeler with Rik Fox Ep274
Bassist Rik Fox returns to Decibel Geek this week for Albums Unleashed - Steeler. Fronted by vocalist Ron Keel, Steeler had migrated west from Nashville. Upon his arrival, Keel would realize he needed new players to compete with a burgeoning Sunset Strip scene that included rising stars such as Motley Crue and Quiet Riot. In this long form discussion, Rik shares his memories of auditioning for Steeler, his meeting with drummer Mark Edwards, and the circumstances that would lead to Swedish hotshot guitarist Yngwie Malmsteen joining the band. Upon his arrival, Malmsteen certainly made his presence felt. In this discussion, Rik shares some entertaining stories of the eccentric shredder including a very tense moment in rehearsal between Malmsteen and Keel. Albums Unleashed - Steeler Also in this discussion, Fox shares his personal feelings of the recording process of the Steeler album as well as memories of particular shows on the Sunset Strip. Steeler was a very well-known band in the Hollywood area and would pack clubs regularly. In this long-form talk, Rik recalls a show opening up for Quiet Riot that took place as the Metal Health album was taking off. As the bassist of Steeler, Rik Fox was a member of one of the most pivotal bands in L.A heavy metal history. Steeler, while a popular act of the era that had great songs, did not seem to have the all-for-one-and-one-for-all type of relationship that many other bands had. According to Fox, tensions mounted as the band's popularity began to rise. Issues with Malmsteen's critique of the material and songwriting led to growing tension between the guitarist and Keel. In this discussion, Rik also shares his memories of the end of his version of Steeler including how he was let go from the band. We hope you enjoy Albums Unleashed - Steeler and SHARE with a friend. I love the open format of the show. Whether they are introducing me to obscure bands and songs I've never heard of before, or giving their own personal insights to the music I grew up with (I'm 43 - so do your own math ;p), each episode has been a fun ride. Albums Unleashed All Systems Go w/Bobby Rock - ...
Drummer Bobby Rock joins the guys this week for Albums Unleashed Vinnie Vincent Invasion All Systems Go. In this long-form discussion, Bobby goes into detail on the tour leading up to the recording of this sophomore album; including his recollection of equipment being confiscated due to a pending lawsuit filed by former New England drummer Hirsh Gardner against Vinnie Vincent. A lot of tension was building around the recording of All Systems Go with pressure coming down from Chrysalis label heads pushing for more restrained playing from Vincent. That tension would grow to a boil as label moves and band machinations began to cause a separation between the members of the band. In this long form discussion, Bobby shares his feelings on this pressure as well as how the band reacted to it through the recording process. All Systems Go In this Albums Unleashed special, Bobby Rock discusses the songs on All Systems Go and why certain songs didn't get the push they didn't deserve such as the lack of video for opening track, Ashes to Ashes. Other items discussed include a managerial change in the band during the recording process as well as a tour that was in the works with another guitar hero that fell through. Near the end of the discussion, Bobby is asked about his interest in the off-chance that he'd be asked to be part of an Invasion reunion. His answer might surprise you. Best of 2016 - Ep269
Chris and Aaron return this week to countdown their Top 10 albums of the year that was in Best of 2016 - Ep269. In this 2 hour-plus episode, your hosts find themselves looking back on a year that had many highs as well as lows. The music world lost a ton of talent; causing many to label it the "worst year ever." While those losses certainly stung the guys as well, they prove in this episode that there was a ton of great music released in 2016 including albums from legends such as Metallica, Megadeth, Suicidal Tendencies, and Testament. Best of 2016 Other great releases came from bands such as Volbeat, Tango Down, Crobot, The Dead Daisies, and many, many more. In this long-form episode the guys knock back a few beers and blast out some great rock and metal from the year that was 2016. We hope you enjoy Best of 2016 - Ep269 and SHARE with a friend! They have finally hit their stride! For those of you who don't know, these dudes have been at this podcasting thing for quite some time. They may have changed their names since their original podcasts, but I was able to figure out their ruse. ("Czynszak" - really,... that's the best you could come up with?) You see back in the day, Chirs Sinsack and Aaron Pinto hosted a great YES podcast called "Close to the Edge of Our Lonely Hearts". Unfortunately, it only lasted a couple of episodes, because the shows lasted for 12 hours due to the self-indulgent nature of prog rock. ITunes cyber police pulled it for breaking bandwidth rules and the guys were without a show. A few months later, I stumbled on to a Juice Newton fanatics podcast called "Juice Box" and recognized some familiar voices. However, that show didn't last long either since Aaron kept falling asleep during the taping and because of the fact that there were only 3 listeners (Chris apparently had multiple accounts). Then I heard this fantastic podcast called Decibel Geek that covered all things Hard Rock & Metal (and covered it really well!). Although the names had been changed to protect the innocent, it was definitely Chris & Aaron. These guys do a hell of a job bringing fresh perspectives to the genre and a lot of it's sub-genres in the metal world. On a weekly basis you can expect great interviews, amazing knowledge of the bands & eras and lots of laughs with guys that seem like your friends back home. 5 starz all the way! Eric Carr Remembered with Gary Corbett Pt1 - Ep265
Former KISS keyboardist and friend of Eric Carr joins the guys this week to celebrate the life of the late drummer on the 25th anniversary of his loss. Gary joined KISS in 1987 for the Crazy Nights tour and remained with the band throughout 1990's Hot in the Shade tour. During this period he developed a close bond with Eric Carr as the two would spend much of their free time entertaining each other on the road. In this long form talk, Gary shares stories from his friendship with Eric including some behind the scenes stories that should be new to many KISS fans. Eric Carr Also, Gary shows Chris and Aaron some home videos from his days in KISS and gets their reactions. Footage viewed includes an impromptu 40th birthday party in Eric's hotel room attended by Eric, Gary, Gene Simmons, Bruce Kulick and then-girlfriend Carrie Stevens. Other candid footage discussed includes a golf outing in Ireland with Paul Stanley and a famous British singer he was dating at the time. The guys also view and discuss some cool live footage from the Monsters of Rock tour of Europe in 1988 as well as shows on the Hot in the Shade tour. This conversation went very long and was a lot of fun thus, the necessity to break it up into parts. Albums Unleashed Skid Row Rachel Bolan Michael ...
Skid Row bassist Rachel Bolan and producer Michael Wagener join the guys this week for Albums Unleashed Skid Row. Recorded in Lake Geneva, Wisconsin, Skid Row was released January 24, 1989 on Atlantic Records. Thanks to strong response to singles such as 'Youth Gone Wild,' '18 and Life,' 'Piece of Me,' and the ballad 'I Remember You,' Skid Row would go on to sell over 5 million copies. This self-titled debut featured the talents of bassist Bolan, drummer Rob Affuso, singer Sebastian Bach, and the twin-guitar assault of Scotti Hill and Dave "The Snake" Sabo. In this nearly two hour discussion, Bolan discusses the early days of Skid Row, including a period pre-Bach that featured vocalist Matt Fallon. Fallon would unfortunately go down in infamy as someone that lost out on stardom not once but twice as he was jettisoned from jobs with Anthrax and Skid Row. Bolan also shares the circumstances that led to Bach's hiring at the young age of 19. Michael Wagener shares his memories of how he was brought on board to produce the album by A&R man Jason Flom and Skid Row manager Doc McGhee. Albums Unleashed Skid Row Skid Row's beginnings were helped in part to Bon Jovi. Guitarist Sabo was childhood friends with Jon Bon Jovi  and the friends had agreed to help each other out if one "made it" before the other. But Bon Jovi and Richie Sambora were not going to lend a hand until Skid Row was ready. In this long-form discussion, Bolan shares stories of rounds of songwriting between he and Sabo being critiqued by the two Bon Jovi leaders and scrutinized until they deemed the band ready. Recording the album in Lake Geneva, Wisconsin, Skid Row and Wagener got down to business right away. In this discussion, Michael shares his memories of the production of 'Skid Row' and how the band, while certainly having a wild side, were all business when it came to their time in the studio. Rachel also remembers the hobbies that he took up to help pass the time in the Midwest during production. Bolan and Wagener detail track by track the songwriting and production of each song on the album. It's an in-depth look behind the scenes of one of the biggest hard rock debut albums of all-time. RATT Discussion with Alexi Lalas - Ep259
Soccer legend Alexi Lalas joins the guys this week for a RATT Discussion; breaking down all eight studio albums and discussing the history of the band. RATT was one of the most notable bands to emerge from the burgeoning Sunset Strip era of the early 1980's. From the self-titled EP that earned them a roster spot on Atlantic Records to the breakthrough success of Out of the Cellar, RATT let the world know early and often that they were a force to be reckoned with. Guitarists Robbin Crosby and Warren DeMartini formed a tandem that would write some of hard rock's most memorable riffs. Bobby Blotzer and Juan Croucier combined for a powerful rhythm section. And Stephen Pearcy topped things off with a sleazy look and vocal delivery that made RATT stand out from the pack. RATT Discussion with Alexi Lalas In this nearly 2-hour music and discussion talk, Alexi Lalas explains how he first discovered RATT as a youngster in suburban Detroit. In addition to the muscial influence the band had on him, he shares stories of how the band's fashion sense rubbed off on him. It's no doubt a fact that RATT's influence would help inspire Alexi to have one of the most unique looks in the world of sports in the 1990's. Alexi Lalas Your three hosts break down every album including the often-underrated Dancing Undercover as well as Detonator. They also discuss later albums including the 1999 self-titled album that sported a different sound than what most RATT fans were accustomed to. 2010 saw RATT return to form with Infestation; a solid slab of classic-sounding RATT material that the rock world took to immediately. In this long-form episode, Alexi shares his thoughts on these albums as well as the situation concerning Bobby Blotzer's new version of RATT, the legal wrangling that's been taking place over the last year, and the recent Monsters of Rock Cruise performance of the remaining members of RATT. It's a solid block of RATT and Roll. We hope you enjoy RATT Discussion with Alexi Lalas and SHARE with a friend! Buy Music! RATT Alexi Lalas More Alexi Lalas! Great interviews and Albums Unleashed on some of my favorites! Chris and Aaron have a good chemistry and while one loves Ugly Kid Joe way to much they both love KISS and that's fine by me!My absolute favorite episode is the episode on DaDa. Any show that does a full episode interviewing the GREAT Dick Wagner about the vastly underrated DaDa album has my glowing adoration. That album is so genius and overlooked and I am so glad that you guys interviewed him before he was gone about this gem!The John Corabi and Toby Wright (Carnival) interviews were great too, both albums are largely overlooked but the s/t Motley album is IMO their best and Carnival is easily in my top 3 KISS albums of all times, so to hear the behind the scenes stories was wonderful!
