Guitarist Mick Sweda and engineer Toby Wright join the guys this week to reflect on 1988's Bulletboys album. Produced by the Ted Templeman for Warner Bros Records, the album reached #34 on the Billboard 200 chart. Correspondingly, the band received heavy rotation from MTV. The videos for 'Smooth Up in Ya' and 'For the Love of Money' were ever-present at the time. Bulletboys   Mick shares the story of how he, bassist Lonnie Vencent and vocalist Marq Torien exited King Kobra. With the addition of drummer Jimmy D'Anda, the band started turning heads quickly in Hollywood, including that of Templeman. Between the chops of the members and an essential image, Bulletboys were armed with plenty of ammunition. Working as an engineer in 1988, Toby shares his memories from the production side of things including an instance of him showing Mick and the guys reels from the recently-completed 'And Justice for All' album by Metallica. The production of Bulletboys took place at One on One Studios in Hollywood, CA. In this episode, Mick and Toby discuss some differences of opinion on certain aspects of recording and the lessons learned from that process. Additionally, the guys give their thoughts on working with producer Ted Templeman. Next, we move on to get Mick's memories on the songwriting process with a track-by-track discussion. Bulletboys features ten very strong tracks. In contrast to other bands of the era, there isn't a single ballad on the album. Nonetheless, the album thrives in spite of the expected with songs full of attitude and swagger. Bulletboys 1988   Although lead singer Marq Torien has made certain claims about the songwriting on this album, Mick takes time to share his side of the story. In light of Mick's stories today, it makes for an interesting picture of the making of this album. Ultimately, the past came back around to the present. Mick reformed with Jimmy D'Anda and Lonnie Vencent to form Lies Deceit & Treachery; a new band with a classic sound. Check out more on them HERE. We're back this week to tackle July through December for our 1996 Year in Review Pt2. July sees Layne Staley taking the stage for the last time. The Alice in Chains vocalist would overdose after a show in Kansas City, MO and never perform live again. Also in July, the Spice Girls hit big while scientists clone the first sheep. We're not saying there's a connection. We also aren't saying there isn't one. We discuss these stories and spin tunes from Jack Russell and Sublime. The month of August in this 1996 Year in Review Pt2 is a busy one. Oasis is hitting their peak on the strength of 1995's 'What's the Story Morning Glory' album. The band is selling out shows all over the world while getting massive press for shooting off their mouths. Conversely, Ramones were wrapping up a three decade career filled with great songs as well as disappointment.  We take on these subjects as well as play cuts from Type O Negative and Michael Schenker Group. 1996 Year in Review Pt2   September of 1996 contains a bunch of great music. In this 1996 Year in Review Pt2 episode we spin fresh tracks from Thunder, Rush, Neurotic Outsiders, and Tool. Moreover, October sees the trend of solid rock music continue with releases by Marilyn Manson, Motorhead, Dio, and a greatest hits album by Van Halen. Speaking of Van Halen, the band shocked the world at the MTV Video Music Awards as the band reunited on stage with original singer David Lee Roth to present an award. The reunion was over before it began, however, and the whole thing fizzled quickly due to infighting. We discuss the Van Halen reunion that wasn't in this episode. The month of October 1996 included a big announcement by guitar hero Slash as he announced his departure from Guns N Roses. This announcement cemented most music fans opinion that the band was finished. Additionally, October included new music from Ugly Kid Joe, Corrosion of Conformity and a strange new release from LA Guns. We share some tracks from these bands and discuss some of the reasons behind Slash's big decision. November and December of 1996 included newsworthy items such as Bill Clinton defeating Bob Dole in the US election and the launch of the Mars Global Surveyor. New music from Gotthard, Poison, and Nerf Herder is unleashed on the world. We take a look at these stories this week. This week we look at 1996, a year that celebrated the past while looking to the future. In part 1, we dig into the first half of 1996; and it was a busy six months. January includes stories on the evils of Alternative Rock and near fatal incidents involving some big name celebrities. Additionally, it included new releases from ACCEPT and Mr. Big. We head into February of 1996 by discussing some fantastic rock releases. It was a month that included fresh material from Bad Religion and Enuff Z'nuff. It also featured new releases by veteran artists like Deep Purple as well as Bruce Dickinson.  February 28th was a monumental day for KISS fans as the original band appeared in full regalia at the Grammy Awards. This week we give you our reactions to this event as well as our take on the mania that was the KISS Reunion Tour. [caption id="attachment_34556" align="alignright" width="300"] 1996 Year in Review Part 1 [/caption] The month of March, 1996 was a busy on in the rock and metal world. Judas Priest returned with a new lead singer, KISS released MTV Unplugged, and Stone Temple Pilots solidified their standing with Tiny Music. Additionally, the Beatles returned to the top of the heap with their Anthology album release. The big story of April 1996 is certainly the Unabomber arrest. Ted Kaczynski was found holed up in a Montana cabin after years of harm. Also, Local H releases their As Good As Dead album on April 16th. We're not drawing any parallels (or are we?). May of 1996 was chock full of great music releases. New material by hard rock stalwarts Scorpions and Great White was premiered. Soundgarden wrapped up their golden age with Down on the Upside. Additionally, new music from King's X and a fantastic one-and-done album by Imperial Drag. We close out this week's episode discussing June of 1996. News stories covered include the Communications Decency Act of 1996 and the kickoff to KISS' reunion tour at Detroit's Tiger Stadium. Music covered in June includes Zakk Wylde's first solo effort, Book of Shadows, and the aforementioned KISS with their You Wanted the Best release. We had a blast looking back at the first half of 1996. Included in this episode are discussions of sports stories of the year as well as popular television shows. Nashville music scene legend and dear friend of the show Todd Austin returns for Six Songs Toddzilla Thinks You Should Hear. If you are new to the show and unfamiliar with Toddzilla, be sure to familiarize yourself with his first two appearances on Decibel Geek. His first appearance, Roth-Era Van Halen Discussion, introduced the listeners to a master storyteller. Todd's memories of growing up a Van Halen fan in the late 70's and his hilarious stories of seeing the band live made him an instant hit to Decibel Geek listeners. [caption id="attachment_32949" align="alignright" width="300"] Six Songs Toddzilla [/caption] Toddzilla's second appearance on the show focused on his story. Conversation with Toddzilla included stories of Todd's many years as a professional musician (including highs and lows), his unique appearance, run-ins with legends such as Robert Plant and Billy Gibbons, a strange music store encounter with Vinnie Vincent, and an Ace Frehley story and impression that will have you cackling like a spaceman from Jendell. Things were no laughing matter, however, earlier this year when Todd's life was turned upside down due to a house fire that destroyed his home, most of his belongings, and nearly all of his beloved pets. The music community (including many Decibel Geek listeners) rallied around Todd to chip in to a GoFundMe account that was put in place to help Todd and his partner Abbie replace much of what was lost. Sandy Gennaro joins the guys this week for a career spanning discussion that goes deeper than just the music. Sandy has toured and/or recorded with: Blackjack, Cyndi Lauper, Joan Jett and the Blackhearts, Bo Diddley, Johnny Winter, The Monkees, Joe Lynn Turner, Michael Bolton, Benny Mardones, Craaft, The Mamas and Papas and Jon Paris. He has recorded several Top 10 singles and has performed for for over a billion fans spanning his 50 year career. He is also a favored councelor at the Rock and Roll Fantasy Camps. He is currently recording and gigging with various artists in Nashville. In this long-form discussion, Sandy shares stories of growing up in New York, a passion for the Yankees, his early musical influences, experiencing KISS playing in a small Queens club and many other great stories. As is known with Decibel Geek, KISS stories are always of interest and Sandy has a lot of tie-ins to KISS including his time working Bruce Kulick in Blackjack as well as a stint of coaching Peter Criss in preparation for the KISS Alive IV Symphony shows in Australia. Sandy is also a speaker and, as you'll hear, has a knack for solid, inspirational advice. His advice on persevering through adversity and sticking to your dreams comes through loud and clear in this conversation.
