KISS Vinnie Vincent Invasion iTunes Review: Great listen by Rocr2 on Jan 10, 2018 Rating: ★★★★★ This pod cast gets a five star just for turning me onto Orchid! Can’t even begin to imagine the prep time these guys put into a show bringing a great wealth of knowledge ,humor and entertaining . It’s also refreshing to hear a music related podcast where the host does not talk about himself for half of it. Amazing variety of bands , songs , sounds , interesting bio , little known facts and even some useless information packed into each show. Their passion shows through on every episode!!!!! If your not a subscriber you are missing out. Facebook Review: Joe Bernstein reviewed Decibel Geek Podcast — 5 star January 12 at 2:16pm · I just discovered Decibel Geek podcasts. As a child of the '70's and '80's, this is right up my alley. I drive truck for a living, and prefer to listen to things to keep my brain engaged, and this certainly fits the bill. Your passion and knowledge for the music we all love makes the podcasts enjoyable. But the interaction amongst yourselves, with the sense of humor, respect (for each other and the guests) as well as love for the deep cuts and out-of-the-ordinary, make this podcast a necessity. What Rocked in 2017? We Answer! - Best of 2017 ...
If you think Rock is dead, then we have three hours of audio that prove you wrong. The Best of 2017 features twenty songs from the best Rock and Metal albums released over the past year.  We've selected our top 10 albums and are going to spin tracks from each in a 3-hour marathon episode. Additionally, you'll get discussion on some the events that made 2017 a banner year for Decibel Geek. [caption id="attachment_35287" align="alignright" width="350"] Best of 2017 [/caption] Several veteran acts released strong material in 2017. Alice Cooper proved he still has the macabre touch with the release of Paranormal; an album that features a wide variety of sounds and special guests. Did it make our lists? You'll have to listen to find out. Moreover, other seasoned artists including Living Colour, Mark Slaughter, LA Guns, Warrant, Overkill, Jack Russell, and Vain released new material. We discuss all of these albums and where they rank on our lists. One new trend in the hard rock world these days are supergroup projects and 2017 had a number of them. Of note, releases from Revolution Saints, Sons of Apollo, Black Country Communion, and Tokyo Motor Fist came out. Also new for 2017 were offerings from Night Demon, Every Mother's Nightmare, Klassik 78, GWAR, Bigfoot, The Darkness, and Danko Jones. With this in mind, we have a lot to get to. Hello Oasis, Goodbye Ramones, and Welcome Back ...
We're back this week to tackle July through December for our 1996 Year in Review Pt2. July sees Layne Staley taking the stage for the last time. The Alice in Chains vocalist would overdose after a show in Kansas City, MO and never perform live again. Also in July, the Spice Girls hit big while scientists clone the first sheep. We're not saying there's a connection. We also aren't saying there isn't one. We discuss these stories and spin tunes from Jack Russell and Sublime. The month of August in this 1996 Year in Review Pt2 is a busy one. Oasis is hitting their peak on the strength of 1995's 'What's the Story Morning Glory' album. The band is selling out shows all over the world while getting massive press for shooting off their mouths. Conversely, Ramones were wrapping up a three decade career filled with great songs as well as disappointment.  We take on these subjects as well as play cuts from Type O Negative and Michael Schenker Group. 1996 Year in Review Pt2   September of 1996 contains a bunch of great music. In this 1996 Year in Review Pt2 episode we spin fresh tracks from Thunder, Rush, Neurotic Outsiders, and Tool. Moreover, October sees the trend of solid rock music continue with releases by Marilyn Manson, Motorhead, Dio, and a greatest hits album by Van Halen. Speaking of Van Halen, the band shocked the world at the MTV Video Music Awards as the band reunited on stage with original singer David Lee Roth to present an award. The reunion was over before it began, however, and the whole thing fizzled quickly due to infighting. We discuss the Van Halen reunion that wasn't in this episode. The month of October 1996 included a big announcement by guitar hero Slash as he announced his departure from Guns N Roses. This announcement cemented most music fans opinion that the band was finished. Additionally, October included new music from Ugly Kid Joe, Corrosion of Conformity and a strange new release from LA Guns. We share some tracks from these bands and discuss some of the reasons behind Slash's big decision. November and December of 1996 included newsworthy items such as Bill Clinton defeating Bob Dole in the US election and the launch of the Mars Global Surveyor. New music from Gotthard, Poison, and Nerf Herder is unleashed on the world. We take a look at these stories this week. So many subjects, so many songs, and so much more including Top Movies of 1996 and classic commercials! We hope you enjoy 1996 Year in Review Pt2 and SHARE with a friend! Unabomber Caught, KISS Reunite, and Beatles Gal...
This week we look at 1996, a year that celebrated the past while looking to the future. In part 1, we dig into the first half of 1996; and it was a busy six months. January includes stories on the evils of Alternative Rock and near fatal incidents involving some big name celebrities. Additionally, it included new releases from ACCEPT and Mr. Big. We head into February of 1996 by discussing some fantastic rock releases. It was a month that included fresh material from Bad Religion and Enuff Z'nuff. It also featured new releases by veteran artists like Deep Purple as well as Bruce Dickinson.  February 28th was a monumental day for KISS fans as the original band appeared in full regalia at the Grammy Awards. This week we give you our reactions to this event as well as our take on the mania that was the KISS Reunion Tour. [caption id="attachment_34556" align="alignright" width="300"] 1996 Year in Review Part 1 [/caption] The month of March, 1996 was a busy on in the rock and metal world. Judas Priest returned with a new lead singer, KISS released MTV Unplugged, and Stone Temple Pilots solidified their standing with Tiny Music. Additionally, the Beatles returned to the top of the heap with their Anthology album release. The big story of April 1996 is certainly the Unabomber arrest. Ted Kaczynski was found holed up in a Montana cabin after years of harm. Also, Local H releases their As Good As Dead album on April 16th. We're not drawing any parallels (or are we?). May of 1996 was chock full of great music releases. New material by hard rock stalwarts Scorpions and Great White was premiered. Soundgarden wrapped up their golden age with Down on the Upside. Additionally, new music from King's X and a fantastic one-and-done album by Imperial Drag. We close out this week's episode discussing June of 1996. News stories covered include the Communications Decency Act of 1996 and the kickoff to KISS' reunion tour at Detroit's Tiger Stadium. Music covered in June includes Zakk Wylde's first solo effort, Book of Shadows, and the aforementioned KISS with their You Wanted the Best release. We had a blast looking back at the first half of 1996. Included in this episode are discussions of sports stories of the year as well as popular television shows. All that and, of course, plenty of classic commercials. If you enjoyed this Year in Review episode be sure to check out our Year in Review archive! Those Hosers are Fired
The guys are back this week after realizing their Canadian friends were too busy with their own podcast to cover their normal Thanksgiving duties. For five years, Rich "Meister" Dillon and Wally "Gator" Norton devotedly filled in on the last week of Thanksgiving so Chris and Aaron could enjoy time with their families and celebrate their holiday. However, this year the calls and emails went unanswered and the guys were forced to go back out and knock out an episode. The wives are none too pleased. [caption id="attachment_33821" align="alignright" width="300"] Those Hosers are Fired [/caption] Since Rich and Wally are so caught up in their new CGCM podcast, the guys decided to just rip them off and do some of their routines (with a little tweaking for needed improvement). You'll get some special segments and a Playlist Battle that featured songs picked by each host. Artists spun include UDO, Edguy, Megadeth, Anthrax, and a bunch more. Be sure to keep up with the Decibel Geek facebook page for a poll you can vote in to pick the winning playlist. The Canadians seem pretty full of themselves. They seem to think they don't need the exposure that Decibel Geek can bring. To that, the guys say "Those Hosers are Fired!" Contact Us! Six Songs Toddzilla Thinks You Should Hear
Nashville music scene legend and dear friend of the show Todd Austin returns for Six Songs Toddzilla Thinks You Should Hear. If you are new to the show and unfamiliar with Toddzilla, be sure to familiarize yourself with his first two appearances on Decibel Geek. His first appearance, Roth-Era Van Halen Discussion, introduced the listeners to a master storyteller. Todd's memories of growing up a Van Halen fan in the late 70's and his hilarious stories of seeing the band live made him an instant hit to Decibel Geek listeners. [caption id="attachment_32949" align="alignright" width="300"] Six Songs Toddzilla [/caption] Toddzilla's second appearance on the show focused on his story. Conversation with Toddzilla included stories of Todd's many years as a professional musician (including highs and lows), his unique appearance, run-ins with legends such as Robert Plant and Billy Gibbons, a strange music store encounter with Vinnie Vincent, and an Ace Frehley story and impression that will have you cackling like a spaceman from Jendell. Things were no laughing matter, however, earlier this year when Todd's life was turned upside down due to a house fire that destroyed his home, most of his belongings, and nearly all of his beloved pets. The music community (including many Decibel Geek listeners) rallied around Todd to chip in to a GoFundMe account that was put in place to help Todd and his partner Abbie replace much of what was lost. In this Six Songs episode, Toddzilla gives us an update on where things stand in the recovery process, stories about the fundraiser and an incredible benefit concert, details on his projects including Funkhammer, Jones World, and Purple Masquerade, as well as fantastic stories that coincide with each of his Six Songs choices. Konversation with Gene Simmons Band
KISSmas in July kicks off with an in-depth talk with members of the Gene Simmons Band. Guitarists Ryan Cook, Jeremy Asbrock, and Philip Shouse have been garnering rave reviews since their debut in March of 2017. Those names should be familiar to Decibel Geek listeners and readers as they've made numerous appearances on the podcast to discuss The Big Rock Show, Hair of the Dog, and Guitar Duos. They are also members of Thee Rock n Roll Residency; a weekly covers show that has been wowing Nashville crowds with its spot-on renditions of classic rock hits and deep cuts. Additionally, Thee Rock n Roll Residency has a rotating cast of musicians that come from all eras of rock history. [caption id="attachment_30090" align="alignright" width="300"] Gene Simmons Band [/caption] The Gene Simmons Band has been impressing die-hard KISS fans at every show on this tour. What started as a six show commitment has turned into a full-on world tour with more dates being released recently. In this conversation, the Gene Simmons Band shares the circumstances that led to them being hired. Moreover, they discuss their personal KISStories and their take on the band's history. One of the bigger reasons for the success of the Gene Simmons Band has been the wealth of deep KISS cuts that are being performed. Songs such as Charisma, Got Love for Sale, and Almost Human among many others have been thrilling KISS fans en masse. In this discussion, the guys tell Chris and Aaron how those songs were chosen as well as what songs have been rehearsed and are possibly going to be included in future setlists. Furthermore, they discuss the upcoming addition of drummer Brent Fitz to the band. Brent is a member of the extended KISS family tree; known for his work in the band Union with Bruce Kulick. Gene Simmons plans to release a massive box set later in 2017. The set is to contain a large amount of demo and unreleased material. In this long-form talk, the guys share some details they've learned about the box set and plans for it. We hope you enjoy Konversation with Gene Simmons Band and SHARE with a friend! Buy Music! Conversation with Donnie Vie - Ep287
Donnie Vie appears on the Decibel Geek Podcast this week for a revealing conversation.  This long-form discussion covers a life and career of ups, downs, triumphs, rejections, celebration, turmoil and ultimately, rediscovery. Vie, known by many as the controversial front man for Chicago greats Enuff Z'nuff has churned out an impressive catalog of work. However, demons (both individually and collectively) seemed to overshadow the band at every step. Shifting musical climates,  substance abuse, changing members, and even death threatened to eliminate Enuff Z'nuff but the band pushed on; eventually without Donnie Vie. It's been an interesting ride to say the least. [caption id="attachment_29797" align="alignright" width="300"] Donnie Vie [/caption] In this long-form discussion, Donnie Vie discusses the band's early days including how he met bassist Chip Z'nuff, his thoughts on late-guitarist Derek Frigo, wild gigs and after-gig activity, and tons more. Additionally, Vie discusses the stories behind many Enuff Z'nuff songs as well as his thoughts on how songwriting credits were given. Also in this long-form talk, Vie discusses his current situation including how he's adapting to his newfound sobriety. Additionally, he sheds light on some interesting projects that he's currently working on both musically and otherwise. It's a deep dive into one of the most unique people to ever appear on the Decibel Geek Podcast. We hope you enjoy Conversation with Donnie Vie and SHARE with a friend! More Donnie Vie! RUSH Covered in Metal - Ep286
Chris & Aaron continue the love-fest for Geddy, Neil, and Alex this week with RUSH Covered in Metal. There are a lot of cover versions of RUSH songs out there by a lot of different artists. What your hosts found out in research for this episode is that there are a lot of bad RUSH covers. However, this week you're gonna get the best gems that they could find in a sea of mediocrity. Clearly, RUSH is a very difficult band to successfully cover. Try to put too much of your own spin on it and you trash what people remember. Try to straight up mimic them and you come off sounding like a poor imitation. This week you'll get harder-edged, unique (but not too unique) renditions of RUSH classics. RUSH Covered in Metal [/caption] RUSH Covered in Metal featured covers performed by Mark Slaughter, George Lynch, Sebastian Bach, Michael Schenker, Skid Row, Machine Head, Local H, Allegaeon, Jani Lane, Billy Talent, and Mindless Self Indulgence. Before the festivities the guys give an update on a tragic situation that befell former guest and friend of the show, Todd "Toddzilla" Austin. The Heavier Side of RUSH - Ep285
Chris & Aaron return this week to discuss The Heavier Side of RUSH; songs that kick a little harder from the legendary Canadian trio. RUSH, formed in 1968, and solidified in 1971 with a lineup of Geddy Lee (bass/vocals), Alex Lifeson (guitar), and John Rutsey (drums) would find aid in manager Ray Danniels and producer Terry Brown. The self-titled 1974 debut album was filled with hard rock numbers reminiscent of Led Zeppelin. The band would ultimately break on the strength of the song 'Working Man' receiving airplay on WMMS in Cleveland. Rutsey, however, would have to retire from the road due to health complications. Enter Neil Peart. The multi-talented drummer had incredible skill not only on the kit but would go on to become the band's principal lyricist. From that point, RUSH carved their own path; releasing trailblazing albums that straddled the worlds of hard and progressive rock; building a rabid following along the way. 40-plus years later and RUSH sit, rightfully, in the upper echelon of rock music history. The Heavier Side of RUSH In this long-form RUSH-themed episode, the guys share their personal take on RUSH's history, their influence, their legacy, and more. They also spin some of their favorite heavier RUSH tunes. Using it as a helpful guide, they also discuss the awesome new RUSH: Album by Album book penned by Martin Popoff and also share how YOU can win a copy! Under the ACDC Influence - Ep284
DBG VIP and Decibel Geek writer, Steven Michael, joins Chris and Aaron for Under the ACDC Influence; a deep dive into bands that were influenced by the Australian hard rock giants. Steve and the guys discuss their love for ACDC, the evidence of their influence on rock and roll history, and spin a bunch of tracks by a bunch of bands that were influenced by Angus Young and company. Many fads come and go, and with them so do many bands. What is the flavor of the week will soon be a punchline to a joke told decades later. ACDC never fell into that trap. Through numerous trends including Prog Rock, Punk Rock, Disco, New Wave, Glam Metal, and Grunge, the Australian-born legends stayed the course; continuing to pump out headbanging, hooky rock n roll. This consistency has produced an influence that has transcended multiple generations of fans. Under the ACDC Influence In this jam packed episode you'll get tracks from Jackyl, Four Horsemen, Voodoo Piston, Ugly Kid Joe, The Treatment, Rhino Bucket, Koritni, Black Aces, Airbourne, Dirty Looks, ACCEPT, Guns N Roses, Rose Tattoo, 77, and Krokus! Albums Unleashed - TUFF What Comes Around with ...
Stevie Rachelle joins the guys this week for Albums Unleashed - TUFF What Comes Around Goes Around. In this long-form discussion, Stevie discusses the circumstances that led to him fronting TUFF. Originally from Wisconsin, Rachelle was bitten by the bug early and headed west to Los Angeles in search of fame. However, it's not instant success. In this talk, Rachelle reflects on his audition with TUFF, what led to his hiring, and the band's rise on the Sunset Strip. TUFF - Albums Unleashed What Comes Around TUFF would slug it out on the Sunset Strip for a while; building their core audience at clubs such as Gazarri's, The Whisky, Perkins Palace, and The Country Club. During this time, they'd be rejected by dozens of labels. Determined, the band would continue to tread the boards on regional tours through the Southern and Midwestern United States until Atlantic Records came calling. What Comes Around Goes Around, released in 1991, was produced by Howard Benson and mixed by Sir Arthur Payson. This episode features some great behind-the-scenes stories.
