Top 5 KISS Songs 1974-1977 Ep342
Filmmaker Andrew Sgambati is with us this week to talk about The Greatest Show on Earth as well as to pick our Top 5 KISS Songs 1974-1977! While there's a ton of controversy surrounding the Hottest Band in the Land in 2018 we're happy to have Andrew on to discuss a time when all was right in the world. The mid-1970's were a magical time for KISS. The strength of their six studio albums and two live albums propelled the band into the heights of pop culture consciousness in 1977. Inspired by such a special era for the band, Andrew channeled that inspiration into making The Greatest Show on Earth; a concert film/documentary sourced from video from live 1977 concerts and audio from Alive II. [caption id="attachment_47666" align="alignright" width="350"] Top 5 KISS 1974-1977 [/caption] Additionally, Andrew sticks around to join us in picking our Top 5 KISS Songs 1974-1977. Vinnie Vincent Special vol6 - Ep341
Promoter Joe D'Angelo joins us for Vinnie Vincent Special vol6; our thoughts on Miami, Memphis, and more. We said we'd never do another one of these but with recent events taking place, we had to chime in. In this latest volume, Joe tells us about his experience booking and working with Vinnie Vincent. Vinnie appeared in Miami for The Gathering KISS Kruise Preparty. He appeared for two meet and greet days as well as a performance with Four by Fate onstage for a few songs. Joe gives us the details on what it's like working with Vinnie, how he was to the fans, as well as his thoughts on the onstage performance. We also give our thoughts on Vinnie's performance of Lick It Up, I Love It Loud, and Cold Gin. [caption id="attachment_47584" align="alignright" width="350"] Vinnie Vincent Special vol6 [/caption] Moving on from Miami, Joe stays with us to discuss our thoughts (at that time) about the upcoming 2 night stand at Graceland in Memphis. We delve into what are expectations would be for the fans that are traveling to Tennessee, how ticket sales seemed to be going and speculation on what would go down. A few days after recording with Joe, a Vinnie Vincent bombshell was dropped. The Memphis shows have been postponed (just weeks away from their confirmed dates) and the show is being moved to Nashville in February. While refunds and exchanges seem to be available to ticket buyers, it became apparent quickly that a number of Vinnie Vincent fans were going to be mightily inconvenienced due to this short notice schedule/city change. We give our unfiltered thoughts on this whole mess and state what we think is going to happen (or not happen) in Nashville in February of 2019. Type O Negative Discussion - Ep339
We're wishing you a Happy Halloween this week with our Type O Negative Discussion! Patreon DBG VIP and donor to the ROCKNPOD Expo Andy Connors joins us to break down the history of this legendary Brooklyn band. The roots of Type O Negative stretch back to the 1980's when Peter (Ratajczyk) Steele and Josh Silver perform in local metal band Fallout. This would lead to Roadrunner act Carnivore and then morph into Type O Negative with Steele, Silver, drummer Sal Abruscato, and Kenny Hickey. Type O Negative In this long form discussion, Andy shares with us the history of Type O Negative. From the debut album Slow, Deep, and Hard through 2007's Dead Again, they blazed a trail of dark, sludgy metal that had a sound all its own. Additionally, you'll hear personal song picks from our guest relating to each album in the discography. It's a moody hour-plus of music and talk for you this week. Top 5 Pantera Songs
In honor of episode 333 we’re spinning our Top 5 Pantera Songs! It’s been 18 years since the last Pantera studio release and both Vinnie and Dime are no longer with us. But even so, the music they left behind still reverberates today. With the exception of the lesser-known “Glamtera” years, Pantera burst onto a turbulent music world. Indeed, the early 90's were a time of great transition. Notably, grunge was driving out “hair” metal; causing divisions among the music-buying public. Brothers Vinnie and Darrell Abbott, Rex Brown, and Philip Anselmo lit a fire that burned bright and inspired thousands. Considering the environment, for a metal band from Texas to capture the public’s attention and unite different cliques is remarkable. Additionally, the wild, untamed stories of excess while on tour only helped to build the Pantera legend. Top 5 Pantera Songs   Choosing our Top 5 Pantera Songs was no easy task. Since both of us are huge fans, we could have easily picked five contenders off each album! This week we give your our favorites. They come from such classic sonic platters as Cowboys from Hell, Vulgar Display of Power, Far Beyond Driven, The Great Southern Trendkill, Official Live: 101 Proof, and Reinventing the Steel. Pantera is no stranger to Decibel Geek Podcast. We’ve featured their music several times and even devoted a couple of previous episodes to the Cowboys from Hell. Albums Unleashed - Devil Without a Cause with K...
Original member of Kid Rock's Twisted Brown Trucker Band Kenny Olson brings some amazing stories this week! Devil Without a Cause was unleashed on the world 20 years ago and it's place in music history is solidified. Kenny Olson In this long-form talk, Kenny Olson gives the backstory of how a diverse group of Detroit musos found each other, blended together a sound like no other, and went out and dominated the world.  The late 90's were a difficult time for guitar driven rock music. The grunge era had come to an end and the mainstream world was preoccupied with pop tarts and boy bands rising up the charts. To have a foul-mouthed white rapper spitting bars over a rhythm section that would make Motown proud and a guitar duo that could simultaneously belt out the blues while ripping your face off sharing space on TRL is one of the most unique success stories we've ever heard. Kenny Olson goes incredibly in depth in this long for talk; sharing stories on the making of the album as well as experiences that came out of its success. You'll also get an update on the amazing things he's been up to since including his new band 7 Day Binge. We hope you enjoy Albums Unleashed - Devil Without a Cause and SHARE with a friend! Your First KISS - Ep329
We're back this week to wrap up KISSMAS in July by calling YOU to ask about Your First KISS! We hit up Skype this week to talk to friends, fellow podcasters, musicians, etc to get the stories of their first exposure to KISS. It's a fun trip through the rolodex talking about the Hottest Band in the Land! Additionally, you'll get a cool one-on-one chat that Aaron Camaro had with his father-in-law Jimmy. Peter Criss in the 80s - Ep328
Nashville-based guitarist Mike Hutchens is with us this week to talk about his gig with Peter Criss in the 80s. Given that there is so little known about Peter's activities during the mid-1980's, this talk is an eye opener. How did Peter and Stan Penridge decide to base out of Nashville in 1984? How did they choose the band members? Why was the band named Alliance? Those questions, and many more, are answered by Mike in this discussion. Peter Criss in the 80s   The 1984-1985 era of Peter Criss' life is a bit of a mystery. Reuniting with songwriting partner Stan "Doc" Penridge, they formed a band dubbed The Desperate Men in Nashville that had a much different sound than what KISS fans were accustomed to. Additionally, the band name changed to Alliance in the process. They would make their live debut at a radio festival in Nashville titled One for the Sun. Also on the bill, RATT and Alcatrazz; but this band sounded much different. After the Music City debut, Alliance would go on to perform just a handful of dates after recording some demos. What caused the band to end so quickly? Mike sheds light on the subject. We want to thank Mike Hutchens for this in-depth discussion of Peter Criss in the 80s. Check out Mike's material in the links below. We hope you enjoyed Peter Criss in the 80s and SHARE with a friend! Buy Music! KISS Peter Criss Contact Us! Our Favorite Bob Kulick KISS Moments
We're kicking off KISSmas in July with our favorite Bob Kulick KISS moments. Bob Kulick has a very interesting place in KISStory. His relationship goes back before the band was even complete. Auditioning ahead of the eventually-chosen Ace Frehley, Bob left an indelible impression on Gene Simmons and Paul Stanley that would pay dividends down the road. Bob Kulick's performances on KISS records are undeniable. His leads on the studio side of ALIVE II, especially on Larger than Life and All American Man, shine through as well as some great playing on Paul Stanley's 1978 KISS solo album. [caption id="attachment_44752" align="alignright" width="350"] Bob Kulick [/caption] Additionally, Bob's writing talent features on the Unmasked album with his contribution to Naked City; a complex track that digs into Beatles influences and pop sensibilities. By 1982 KISS were in a confused state and Bob is brought back to help steer the ship in a rockier direction on Killers. His leads on the compilation album would help the band regain a foothold in credibility as they emerged from a very experimental phase. In addition to us sharing our favorite Bob Kulick KISS moments, we have some cool excerpts of a fun conversation we recently had with the man himself. Between the great songs and great stories, we think you'll agree that KISSmas in July is off to a great start. We hope you enjoy Our Favorite Bob Kulick KISS Moments and SHARE with a friend! Conversation with Damon Johnson - Ep326
Damon Johnson joins us this week for a discussion of his incredible career. At the present time, Damon has his hands full with Black Star Riders and his upcoming solo album Memoirs of an Uprising. Damon Johnson really brings it in this long-form talk with some great stories from his career and life. From Brother Cane's early days opening for such legends as Van Halen, Aerosmith and Robert Plant among others. Additionally, Damon shares his memories of Brother Cane navigating a shifty musical tide in the 1990's. [caption id="attachment_44329" align="alignright" width="350"] Damon Johnson [/caption] Damon's post-Brother Cane career has taken many twists and turns. Collaborations with Sammy Hagar, Faith Hill, Damn Yankees, Carlos Santana, and Slave to the System (featuring members of Queensryche) show the range of talent in his arsenal. In 2004, Damon Johnson was brought into the Alice Cooper band. In this conversation, he shares his memories of getting the gig, his relationship with Alice, and what he's learned from his time in the band. 2011 saw Damon get to live out another childhood dream as he joined Thin Lizzy. Touring under that banner, he formed a strong chemistry with guitarist Scott Gorham and singer Ricky Warwick. The seeds for Black Star Riders were planted. Ultimately, Black Star Riders would take the Thin Lizzy spirit and breathe life into a well-oiled machine; releasing three solid albums of material. As of 2018, the catalog, including All Hell Breaks Loose, The Killer Instinct, and Heavy Fire, has built a devoted global fan base. Aside from band work with living legends, Damon has a great catalog of solo material. His first album, Dust, was released in 2000. Release would come along in 2010 and Echo in 2016. A live album, Birmingham Tonight, represents 2017 for Damon Johnson. For 2018, Damon has set his sights on another solo album. Memoirs of an Uprising is being funded through Pledge Music. Six Songs Ralph Viera Thinks You Should Hear
We're back this week with a humdinger of an episode that features Ralph Viera (aka Dr. Fukk) picking six songs he thinks you should hear! Ralph is a true renaissance man of rock metal. He hosts multiple live shows on That Metal Station and fronts multiple bands including Thrash or Die. Additionally, Ralph is well known in podcasting circles as the host of the Rock and Metal Combat Podcast. Each week Ralph and co-host Ian Wadley bring great knowledge and humor with an edge. We highly recommend it. [caption id="attachment_39318" align="alignright" width="350"] Ralph Viera [/caption] Equally interesting this week is our discussion at the top of the show of Vinnie Vincent. As we announced a couple months ago, Vinnie was confirmed and announced as a guest for the Nashville Rock n Pod Expo. A lot of work went into promoting his appearance and things were about to go into overdrive. However, things started changing over the past week and ultimately, Vinnie's appearance was cancelled. We share with you the story of what went down and our take on it. The Nashville invasion is now an aborted mission. Such a shame. The Nashville Rock n Pod Expo is moving forward and is expected to be a big success. Current/former members of KISS, Korn, Winger, ACCEPT, Joan Jett, Loudness, Bang Tango, Kik Tracee and more will be there. Additionally, producing legends Michael Wagener and Toby Wright are returning. More great guest and event announcements are coming soon. Japanese Metal - Ep322
Nashville Rock n Pod Expo donor Kevin Williams joins us this week for a talk about Japanese Metal! In this extended episode, Kevin has the knowledge and the tunes you need. Visual Kei, extreme image coupled with music, is a dominant force in Japan. Kevin gives you the backstory of what leads up to the Visual Kei movement in Japan and spins a number of great metal tunes. [caption id="attachment_39144" align="alignright" width="350"] Japanese Metal [/caption] Japanese metal and its history is incredibly interesting. Uniquely, western bands like Black Sabbath and KISS had a definite impact on the culture. With this in mind, Kevin is connecting the dots on how that early influence lead to Visual Kei. As a result, you're getting some fantstic music from artists such as X-Japan, Exist-Trace, Vamps, MUCC, Big Bites, Quaff, Dir En Grey, Aldious, and Maximum the Hormone. We Pick Our Top 5 WASP Songs - Ep321
We're back this week to share our favorite songs by Sunset Strip legends WASP! In 1982 Blackie Lawless builds WASP was built to shock. Their over-the-top image garnered a ton of attention in an already-growing LA music scene. From Lawless' buzzsaw codpiece to models being tied to a torture rack to throwing raw meat into the audience, WASP takes the blueprint set by Alice Cooper and KISS and elevates it to raunchy new heights. Amid all of the theatricality, though, lay some of the best hard rock music of the decade and beyond. WASP   While Blackie Lawless remains the constant in WASP's career, the band has featured a number of fantastic musicians and incarnations over the years. The early days of the band included bassists Rik Fox and Don Costa and, later, Johnny Rod. Notably, some amazing guitarists have graced albums by WASP including Chris "Mean Man" Holmes, Randy Piper, Darrell Roberts, and Bob Kulick. Additionally, a who's who of rock drumming history have passed through the WASP ranks including Tony Richards, Frankie Banali, Stet Howland, Steve Riley, Mike Dupke, and Randy Black. The band currently surrounding Lawless features Doug Blair, Mike Duda, and Aquiles Priester. As mentioned in the show, we're showcasing our personal Top 5 WASP Songs. You're getting great tracks from virtually all eras of their more than thirty year career. In conclusion, it's a deep dive into one of the landmark metal bands of the 1980s and beyond. Rock News, Opinion, and a HUGE Announcement - N...
We are back this week to give you our take on current rock news with New Noize V2. There are some interesting stories coming from the world of rock and we're going to cover some of our favorites. Gibson Broke? Gibson Guitar filed for bankruptcy recently. There are a lot of armchair critics. We're no exception. Listen this week to hear our thoughts on the decision making process of a legendary luthier. [caption id="attachment_38552" align="alignright" width="350"] New Noize V2 [/caption] Perry, Tyler, and...Spongebob?? Steven Tyler and Joe Perry are nominated for a Tony Award. That's not the weird part. It's in connection to a Spongebob Squarepants musical. Hear our take on this story as well as a discussion on how Spongebob may be the most metal cartoon ever. Starchild Going Solo Again? Paul Stanley recently spoke out about the possibility of another solo album as well as his thoughts on doing new music for KISS. Our thoughts on this may surprise you. Consistent Overkill? The mean, green killing machine from New Jersey, Overkill, are back at work on another album. In this episode we discuss the amazingly consistent track record of this band; always delivering top flight metal. The followup to The Grinding Wheel is sure to please fans. All Spectacle and No Substance? KISS manager Doc McGhee recently ruffled some feathers in the KISS Army with his take that, basically, the band could continue forever due to the fact that they are closer to superheroes than credible bands. His quote seemed to downplay the importance of KISS' musical legacy. Needless to say, we have a few things to say about this. Head to the Movies? Korn guitarist Brian "Head" Welch is headed to the big screen. His new documentary, 'Loud Krazy Love,' will be screened in Dallas and Nashville in May before a wide release in the fall. Part of the promotion for the movie will include Brian making an appearance at the upcoming Nashville Rock n Pod Expo on Saturday August 25, 2018 at the Nashville Palace. He will appear on stage for a panel about the movie and his career as well as an autograph and photo session for fans and recording with various podcasters that will be on-site at the event. More info on the movie can be found HERE and info on the expo and how to gain admission available HERE. Heavy Metal Mickey Mouse? In one of the stranger stories from the rock world this week, A new instrumental album of hard-rock covers of classic Disney songs, Disney Super Guitar, has been announced, and it features a jaw-dropping team of world-class guitarists. Zakk Wylde, Paul Gilbert, Orianthi, Phil X, Richie Kotzen, Tak Matsumoto, George Lynch, Mike Orlando, Ron "Bumblefoot" Thal and Jeff Watson all contribute to the album. Each track on Disney Super Guitar features a backing band comprised of guitarist John Bruno, drummer B.J. Zampa, bassist Chris Vescera and keyboardist Michael Vescera, who co-produced the record with the album’s mastermind, producer Death-Rider. Michael Vescera will also be appearing at the Nashville Rock n Pod Expo. More info HERE. The BIG Announcement! As we've hyped for the past couple weeks, we have a BIG announcement to make this week. Conversation with Brent Fitz - Ep319
Veteran drummer Brent Fitz joins us this week for an entertaining talk about his life and career. Born in Winnipeg, Brent  took to music early. After learning drums to a steady soundtrack of bands like RUSH, Fitz was playing the club circuit at age 15. Ultimately, a gig with Canadian band Streetheart gives Brent the confidence to make the leap to Los Angeles in 1996. Brent Fitz   In the 20+ years since arriving in America, Brent Fitz has carved out quite a career. Initially cranking out great tunes with the criminally underrated Union, Brent would join up with LA stalwarts Bulletboys and Vince Neil for road work. Furthermore, this  experience would help prepare Brent for his next challenge, filling the drum chair of Eric Singer in Alice Cooper's band. This long-form interview has lots of great stories from these gigs. Brent's openness and honesty paints a clear picture of what a working musician goes through during a very turbulent time for rock music. As can be seen within KISS fan circles, Brent is at ground zero for two very cool offshoot projects from members of the band. In 2017, he and fellow Slash band mate joined Bruce and Bob Kulick for a performance on The KISS Kruise. The deep cut-laden set was the talk of the Kruise. His position in the Gene Simmons Band has also been a childhood dream come true. Additionally, it was recently announced that Ace Frehley would be using Gene's band as his backing band on an upcoming tour of Australia. As a result of his childhood KISS fandom, it's entertaining to hear Brent's stories about all of these projects. This episode features tons of great stories as well as updates on Gene Simmons, the Kulick Brothers, and Slash. It also underscores the importance in rock history of Streetheart (trust us, it's pretty interesting). The Decibel Geek podcast wants to thank Brent Fitz for such an engaging, entertaining conversation. We hope you enjoy Conversation with Brent Fitz and SHARE with a friend! Vinnie Vincent Reflects on Invasion Debut - Alb...
In an interview seven years in the making, Vinnie Vincent joins us this week.  Undoubtedly one of the most intense rock records ever made, Vinnie Vincent Invasion was a natural topic choice. Our Albums Unleashed criteria is simple; discuss the making of an album we love with a key player in its creation. The debut album by Vinnie Vincent Invasion is an over-the-top, face-melting masterpiece. [caption id="attachment_38337" align="alignright" width="350"] Vinnie Vincent [/caption] Vinnie is incredibly candid in this long-form discussion. After thirty-plus years of others sharing their story on this album, it's namesake goes on on the record to share his memories. Moreover, Vinnie discusses the back story of how Invasion went from being an album title into becoming a band. Additionally, you'll hear him share revelations never heard about the studio environment for this album. Notably, the intense, meticulous nature of how this album was pieced together is an interesting story unto itself. As can be seen, 2018 is shaping up to be the comeback year of Vinnie Vincent. Since his return at the Atlanta KISS Expo in January, Vinnie has been ever-present online and in public. He's made appearances at Orlando's Spooky Empire convention as well as Gene Simmons' recent Vault Experience stop in Nashville. He's got upcoming appearances at the Chiller Theatre expo as well as Days of the Dead and a special appearance at The Gathering 3 ahead of the KISS Kruise. Vinnie recently launched his official website. You can keep track of his personal appearances and buy autographed merchandise at the online store. He's also very interactive with fans on his official Facebook fan page. The Decibel Geek Podcast truly thanks Vinnie Vincent for appearing on the show. Additional thanks to Randy Dietrich for his help setting up this interview. Also Check Out: Vinnie Vincent Reaction (Atlanta KISS Expo Recap) - Ep309 Top 5 Vinnie Vincent Solos - Ep308 Buy Music!
