New Noize KISS Edition - Ep350
With so much happening in the KISS world, we thought we'd return with a KISS Edition of New Noize! In this hour-plus talk, we get down to our thoughts on the nuts and bolts of the KISS world in 2019; and boy is it active! KISS kicked off the beginning of their End of the Road tour in Vancouver this week. Specifically, the stage is massive and is getting lots of attention. Additionally, the specter of backing tracks being piped through the sound system is being discussed. Is the new KISS show live or is it Memorex? We'll dissect and give our thoughts. Also of note, on the eve of the new KISS tour, Ace Frehley took aim at his former band mates; blasting Gene Simmons and Paul Stanley with some serious allegations. Have Paul and Gene cost Ace millions of dollars due to badmouthing him? Did Gene really make a pass at Ace's girlfriend? Consequently, did Ace even actually write the salvo that was launched via his social media? We'll examine and give you our take. New Noize   Finally, the Vinnie Vincent saga takes yet another major twist. After lots of silence from Vinnie, the promoter, as well as Rocketown, the two shows scheduled in Nashville for February 8th and 9th have been cancelled by the promoter. According to him, Vinnie backed out of the shows. Subsequently, Vinnie (and his attorney) released statements essentially saying he backed out of the shows due to non-payment. Either way, the remaining fans of Mr. Vincent are, once again, left disappointed. Does this pay out in court? Will the ticket buyers get their refunds? Will there be another concert scheduled and who would trust that the show will happen? We give our take on this circus. As a result of all of this, there's no shortage of drama within the KISS Kamp. There's been speculation that the band would eventually launch a reality show. This begs the question, are we living through it right now? DIO-CEMBER VOL2 - Ep346
We close out the year in excellent fashion with DIO-CEMBER VOL2! We left off last week with Ronnie James Dio fronting Black Sabbath. Inasmuch as the chemistry was palatable, Ronnie needs and change and things pick up in 1983. The Holy Diver album is an absolute powerhouse because of its lineup. Guitarist Vivian Campbell, bassist Jimmy Bain, and drummer Vinny Appice were the perfect arsenal to back Ronnie up. Accordingly, the results are made clear in the material they released. To follow up Holy Diver with such strong albums as Last in Line and Sacred Heart speaks to the power of this lineup. DIO-CEMBER VOL2 DIO-CEMBER VOL2 explores the many changes that took place in Ronnie's career. While the original lineup gets plenty of love in this episode, we also aim to show you that fantastic material was released well after they ceased to be a unit. Consequently, you'll get tracks from DIO albums including Dream Evil, Lock Up the Wolves, Strange Highways, Magica, Killing the Dragon, and Master of the Moon. Additionally, Aaron spins a great track from the Heaven and Hell lineup. Ronnie James Dio may no longer be with us but he leaves a musical legacy that endures. Indeed, his incomparable voice raised the bar for such legends as Richie Blackmore and Tony Iommi. Additionally, the impressive material that he put out through the DIO is an undeniable template to the greatness of Heavy Metal. We hope you've enjoyed DIO-CEMBER. DIO-CEMBER Vol1 - Ep345
We celebrate the holidays this week by releasing volume 1 of a 2 part special on a legend; DIO-CEMBER Vol1 is here! In this special, we pay tribute to the late, great Ronnie James Dio. This week's entry has us focusing on Ronnie's first decade in the rock world 1972-1981. Ronald Padavona was born in New Hampshire in 1942. His family would soon move to New York where he would be raised around music. Beginning at the age of 5, Ronnie was a born-performer. Stints playing trumpet and bass would lead the way to Ronnie fronting bands. After changing his name to Dio around 1960, his first real step in the world of rock would be taken in 1972. ELF's self-titled debut album features Ronnie and childhood friends performing while Deep Purple legends Roger Glover and Ian Paice produced. This would lead to extended touring opening for Purple and, eventually, the formation of Richie Blackmore's Rainbow. DIO-CEMBER Vol1 Rainbow's history is well-covered but, in short, the Dio-led version of the band is legendary in its output. Richie Blackmore's Rainbow, Rising, and Long Live Rock & Roll are testaments to the powerful partnership between the singer and guitarist. Unfortunately, the clash of egos would lead to Ronnie leaving Rainbow. On the other hand, rock history was waiting to be changed as Dio would then team up with Black Sabbath who had recently parted ways with Ozzy Osbourne. The newfound chemistry between Dio and guitarist Tony Iommi was undeniable. As a result, Black Sabbath would release two landmark albums with Ronnie; Heaven and Hell and Mob Rules. Despite the incredible material, it would be a short-lived union. But, that's for us to discuss on volume 2. We hope you enjoy DIO-CEMBER Vol 1 - Ep345 and SHARE with a friend! 1981 Year in Review Part 2 - Ep344
We're back this week to tackle the who, what, when, where and why of the second half of our 1981 Year in Review Part 2! July of 1981 is a strong month for the rock genre. Strong efforts include releases by Foreigner, Def Leppard, and the Ramones. Additionally, some great under the radar albums by Demon and New England help bolster and already solid month. The month of August is a busy one in news and pop culture. The launch of MTV on August 1st is a landmark moment that's about to turn the music world on its head. Also taking place in August of 1981, John Lennon assassin Mark David Chapman is sentenced. Furthermore, a fantastic musical release by Brad Whitford and Derek St. Holmes is getting attention. 1981 Year in Review Part 2 September of 1981 is filled with great rock music as well as a shocking personnel change. The month is marked with solid outings by Triumph, Grand Funk Railroad, Michael Schenker Group, KIX, and Alice Cooper. Additionally, Iron Maiden do the unthinkable and switch lead singers right as the band is beginning its ascent. The music news for October of 1981 includes a young Prince being boo'd off the stage while opening for the Rolling Stones. Also, music piracy is on the radar as the "Home Taping is Killing Music" campaign is launched. Music releases for October include new solo material from Ozzy Osbourne as well as a big release from his previous band, Black Sabbath. Notably, KISS venture into uncharted waters with a new look and a strange concept album. Hollywood death gripped the United States in November of 1981. Famed actress Natalie Wood tragically drowns while on a boat ride with two other notable thespians. Mystery continues to surround the case. Also of note, porn star John Holmes is arrested, and later acquitted, in the Laurel Canyon "Wonderland" murders. Additionally, November of 1981 is highlighted by big releases from Motley Crue and AC/DC. All of this is covered this week as well as classic commercials in our 1981 Year in Review Part 2! Top 5 KISS Songs 1974-1977 Ep342
Filmmaker Andrew Sgambati is with us this week to talk about The Greatest Show on Earth as well as to pick our Top 5 KISS Songs 1974-1977! While there's a ton of controversy surrounding the Hottest Band in the Land in 2018 we're happy to have Andrew on to discuss a time when all was right in the world. The mid-1970's were a magical time for KISS. The strength of their six studio albums and two live albums propelled the band into the heights of pop culture consciousness in 1977. Inspired by such a special era for the band, Andrew channeled that inspiration into making The Greatest Show on Earth; a concert film/documentary sourced from video from live 1977 concerts and audio from Alive II. [caption id="attachment_47666" align="alignright" width="350"] Top 5 KISS 1974-1977 [/caption] Additionally, Andrew sticks around to join us in picking our Top 5 KISS Songs 1974-1977. [caption id="attachment_47584" align="alignright" width="350"] Vinnie Vincent Special vol6 [/caption] Moving on from Miami, Joe stays with us to discuss our thoughts (at that time) about the upcoming 2 night stand at Graceland in Memphis. We delve into what are expectations would be for the fans that are traveling to Tennessee, how ticket sales seemed to be going and speculation on what would go down. A few days after recording with Joe, a Vinnie Vincent bombshell was dropped. The Memphis shows have been postponed (just weeks away from their confirmed dates) and the show is being moved to Nashville in February. While refunds and exchanges seem to be available to ticket buyers, it became apparent quickly that a number of Vinnie Vincent fans were going to be mightily inconvenienced due to this short notice schedule/city change. We give our unfiltered thoughts on this whole mess and state what we think is going to happen (or not happen) in Nashville in February of 2019. Type O Negative Discussion - Ep339
We're wishing you a Happy Halloween this week with our Type O Negative Discussion! Patreon DBG VIP and donor to the ROCKNPOD Expo Andy Connors joins us to break down the history of this legendary Brooklyn band. The roots of Type O Negative stretch back to the 1980's when Peter (Ratajczyk) Steele and Josh Silver perform in local metal band Fallout. This would lead to Roadrunner act Carnivore and then morph into Type O Negative with Steele, Silver, drummer Sal Abruscato, and Kenny Hickey. Type O Negative In this long form discussion, Andy shares with us the history of Type O Negative. From the debut album Slow, Deep, and Hard through 2007's Dead Again, they blazed a trail of dark, sludgy metal that had a sound all its own. Additionally, you'll hear personal song picks from our guest relating to each album in the discography. It's a moody hour-plus of music and talk for you this week.
