This is part 2 of my series on parenting, boundaries, and mental health. Part one can be found here.

Whenever you, as a parent or caregiver, set a boundary, make sure that you always explain why in a way that your child will understand. Use the moment to model healthy boundaries for your child and teach them what a healthy boundary looks like, using language that encourages your child to think about the situation and what it means. This is part of a series I am doing on questions you submitted for my new book on children’s mental health.

This was Alicia’s question:

“How do I help a sensitive seven-year-old move on after they make a mistake? I have a very sensitive seven year old girl. She likes to follow the rules. However, she does from time to time need some course correction. When I do so, she instantly withdraws, and becomes very quiet and sad, often for a long amount of time. I have a hunch that she’s beating herself up about whatever mistake she made, and I would love some help figuring out how to help her receive correction without being so hard on herself.”

Read the blog here: https://drleaf.com/blogs/news/how-to-help-sensitive-children-manage-their-emotionsSign up to Patreon to get access to full AD-FREE episodes, exclusive downloads, live Q&As, and more: https://www.patreon.com/drcarolineleafOFFERS FROM OUR SPONSORS:-Chime: Start building your credit up. To help our children develop their sense of autonomy and build identity, we as parents and caregivers need to know how to get involved in our children’s lives without smothering them. I know this can be hard at times, especially when we feel the need to constantly protect our children from all the hard things in life. However, if we try to do this, we can end up impacting their growth and mental resilience, which will affect their ability to learn how to manage and deal with the challenges of life. Read the blog here: https://drleaf.com/blogs/news/the-difference-between-safety-net-parenting-helicopter-parentingSign up to Patreon to get access to full AD-FREE episodes, exclusive downloads, live Q&As, and more: https://www.patreon.com/drcarolineleafOFFERS FROM OUR SPONSORS:-Manukora Honey: head to https://MANUKORA.com/DRLEAF or use code DRLEAF, you’ll automatically get a free pack of honey sticks with your order - a $15 value. -ButcherBox: For a limited time, ButcherBox is giving us a special deal! This is part 2 of my series on parenting. You can listen to part 1 here. As I mentioned in part 1, it’s ok to be a “messy” parent. We need to normalize, not stigmatize, messy parenting. This means embracing our feelings and mistakes and learning from them, using them to grow and learn as parents. It means using our own struggles to help our children understand how to manage the “messiness” and challenges of life through example and open communication. Indeed, one of the best ways we can teach our children how to manage their mental health is by modeling how we deal with life’s difficulties, including how we parent them and how we embrace, process and manage our own mistakes.

Read the blog here: https://drleaf.com/blogs/news/what-i-learned-about-parenting-from-watching-ted-lasso

Sign up to Patreon to get access to full AD-FREE episodes, exclusive downloads, live Q&As, and more: https://www.patreon.com/drcarolineleaf

OFFERS FROM OUR SPONSORS:

-Nutrafol: Take the first step to visibly thicker, healthier hair. We all know that parenting is hard. As parents, we will make mistakes. We are only human, after all! As parents and guardians, it is important that we give ourselves permission to be what I call “messy”.

Read the blog here: https://drleaf.com/blogs/news/it-s-time-to-embrace-messy-parenting

Sign up to Patreon to get access to full AD-FREE episodes, exclusive downloads, live Q&As, and more: https://www.patreon.com/drcarolineleaf

OFFERS FROM OUR SPONSORS:

-Purity Woods: Turn back time on the appearance of your skin with Purity Woods’s Age-Defying Dream Cream! It could be said that these examples have in common a perceived lack of agency but they seem to vary in magnitude quite a lot. This is part of my summer series on brain-building activities you can do with your children to help them build up their mental resilience and manage their mental health while having fun.

We all know that getting outside is great for our mental wellbeing. Just think of how you feel when you go for a walk in the sunshine or spend time reading at the beach. Nature has a way of calming us down mentally and physically.

The same is true for our children. Playing outside is one of the best things they can do to boost their mental and physical wellbeing. This may seem obvious, but consider that the average American child spends 4-7 minutes a day in unstructured play outdoors and over 7 hours in front of a screen. This is a cause for concern, as research shows that that children should play outside for around 2-3 hours, or at minimum 20 minutes, a day for optimal mental and physical development. As much as modern technology has improved our lives, it should not replace the act of enjoying the outdoors and what nature has to offer.

Read the blog here: https://drleaf.com/blogs/news/one-surprising-thing-that-will-help-improve-your-child-s-attention-focus

Sign up to Patreon to get access to full AD-FREE episodes, exclusive downloads, live Q&As, and more: https://www.patreon.com/drcarolineleaf

OFFERS FROM OUR SPONSORS:

-Chime: Start building your credit up. I really believe her migraines are stress induced as they almost always follow a tough day at school, being bullied, or when she has had a day of high and happy emotions. While I try to implement as many calming and mind-management strategies as possible, I find myself completely exhausted and burned out as a result of trying to do the deeper mental work with her to help her stay mentally healthy and build resilience to and through tough emotional days. How do I help an empathic 8 year old navigate incredibly intense emotions from a vantage point of giving her tools to use that will help her mental health thrive long term?”.

Read the blog here: https://drleaf.com/blogs/news/how-to-help-your-child-navigate-intense-emotions

Sign up to Patreon to get access to full AD-FREE episodes, exclusive downloads, live Q&As, and more: https://www.patreon.com/drcarolineleaf

OFFERS FROM OUR SPONSORS:

-Betterhelp: Visit BetterHelp.com/DRLEAF today to get 10% off your first month.

EPISODE HIGHLIGHTS:

3:40 We as parents need to help ourselves too!

5:00 How to use mind management to handle the challenges of parenting

8:12 How to help a highly empathetic child manage their mind & emotions

13:00, 26:55 The importance of teaching your child mind management techniques

ADDITIONAL RESOURCES:

-Get my new book Cleaning up Your Mental Mess here: https://www.cleaningupyourmentalmess.com

-Get a free Cleaning up Your Mental Mess workbook when you subscribe to my weekly email at drleaf.com!

- Visit my website at https://drleaf.com for more free resources

-Instagram: @drcarolineleaf: https://www.instagram.com/drcarolineleaf/-

-Facebook: Dr. Caroline Leaf: https://www.facebook.com/drleaf

-Twitter: @drcarolineleaf: https://twitter.com/DrCarolineLeaf

-Youtube: https://www.youtube.com/drcarolineleaf

*DISCLAIMER: This podcast and blog are for educational purposes only and are not intended as medical advice.
