The Secret Life Of Cookies

At The Secret Life of Cookies we know that kitchens are the heart of the home. They’re where families come together, where food comes from and where some of the best conversations take place. Kitchens are where the power is (even nasty President Jackson with his “kitchen cabinet” thought so), and where the baked goods are, which is why Marissa Rothkopf, the host, spends so much time in the kitchen. On The Secret Life of Cookies we will bring you into those conversations with some smart, interesting people who like to cook and have something to say. Pull up a chair up at our kitchen table, and join us as we cook and discuss the important issues of today.

Marissa Rothkopf is a professionally trained chef and food writer who has done everything from restaurant reviews for the New York Times to writing a column on kitchen gadgets for Newsweek. She teaches journalism at Montclair State University and gets nervous when asked to make custard.

Jubilee Tea Time with Simon Majumdar
The wonderful Simon Majumdar helps Marissa celebrate the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee with a history of tea and dainty sandwiches. Majumdar, author, critic, host of the “Eat My Globe” podcast, Food Network judge (“Guy’s Grocery Games,” “Cutthroat Kitchen,” and “Iron Chef America,” among others) oversees the making of proper, crustless tea sandwiches, while discussing the mysterious way tea spread from China to India. Marissa and Simon delve deep into the posh roots of afternoon tea, and talk about gin, because it wouldn’t be a royal weekend without it.

See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

Jennifer’s the woman who couldn’t stand the cruel and hypocritical anti-immigration stance of people like Stephen Miller, so she did something about it. She dug into the family history of these people intent on building a wall and discovered their immigrant histories, and along the way became an expert in genealogy. Along with the news and helpful tips on how to research your ancestors, we bake a Ukrainian cheesecake. Please consider donating to two charities helping people in Ukraine and recommended by Jennifer: Razom for Ukraine and the American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee.

See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

Harry Litman, Live from The Soufflé Bowl!
This week, Marissa’s guest is Harry Litman, host of The Talking Feds podcast, lawyer, pundit, former United States Attorney and Department of Justice official, and together, they made raspberry and orange soufflés step-by-step and discussed everything from Ketanji Brown to Ginni Thomas, and all the stuff in between. Marissa’s guest this week is Ayelet Waldman, the NYTimes best-selling author, and creator and writer behind the Netflix Emmy-award winning series “Unbelievable.” Unbelievable is also the range of topics Marissa and Ayelet cover as they chewy oatmeal cookies: psychedelics, how to use MDMA to keep your marriage on sure footing (Ayelet is married to author Michael Chabon), real gratitude vs smug-gratitude, great books to read, and whether society allows women to age gracefully or if the whole concept is a farce. Marissa’s guest this week is the one and only Rachel Vindman. In the episode, Rachel and Marissa have one of those typical kitchen-table convos. You know, where you make raspberry sauce for molten chocolate cakes, figure out how to protect the country from tyranny and hold our government officials accountable. Yes “accountable” … remember that word? Also, you’ll learn how to become a good kind of troublemaker, and in honor of Superbowl Sunday, Velveeta is praised for its salty, melty goodness. Oath Keepers! Spine-free Republicans! And forget Malibu Ken, Elie offers us Mar-a-Lago Kevin, aka Senator McCarthy to us. This week’s episode marks the one-year anniversary of the podcast. One whole year of baking and talking politics and current events with some of the best and, definitely brightest, of the bunch. To celebrate, Marissa welcomes one of her favorite authors, Charles Finch. Yes, he of the Inspector Lennox mysteries, and a new non-fiction book, What Just Happened: Notes On a Long Year.
