Our newsmaker of the week is State Rep. Jordan Harris, one of the lead sponsors of the "Clean Slate" bill signed into law this week by Pennsylvania Governor Tom Wolf. The bill will allow hundreds of thousands of Pennsylvanians with criminal pasts to get certain records automatically sealed from employers after 10 years. The legislation is the first of its kind. Harris discusses the bi-partisan effort, it's roll out and what's up next in Harrisburg when it comes to criminal justice reform. Our changemaker of the week is known as the "Hug Guy." David Hale Syvester is a big man, with a bigger heart. He's spent the past 17 years traveling the world giving hugs and high fives to strangers. City Of Philadelphia Takes Back Two Kensington ...
This week on Flashpoint: Host and KYW Community Affairs reporter Cherri Gregg asks the burning questions about the City of Philadelphia's recent effort to take back two tunnels in the Kensington section where homeless opiid users were camped out. Dozens set up tents and were using drugs and living in squalor in four tunnels adjacent to a residential neighborhood. The city set up a pilot program designed to take back two of the tunnels- one along Tulip Street, the other along Kensington Avenue. The deadline for the move out was this week. Cherri Gregg sits down with Liz Hersh, Director of the City's Office of Homeless Services, Charito Morales, an outreach worker advocating for the homeless residents of the encampment and Amanda Fury a resident and member of the Somerset Neighbors fpr Better Living to discss the execution of the city's plan, the immediate aftermath and next steps. The Newsmaker of the week is a growing initiative called, "When Black Men Pray." The effort is the brain child of Nathaniel Rogers, a nightclub promoter and business owner. He joined forced with Jonathan Josey, a long time police officer and playwright on an effort to bring Black men together for prayer and support. Cherri sits down with the two men and talk about the need in the community, why it's become so popular and the vision they are working toward. Finally, at Cherri speaks with Robert Rosa of New Leash on Life. He tells his personal story of redemption, but also discusses the non-profits effort to save the lives of dogs once slated for euthanasia, by providing incarcerated men a second chance via job and life skills. Also, Paymon Rouhanifard was an outsider appointed by then Republican Governor Chris Christie to fix the struggling Camden Public Schools. He came in five years ago to much controversy because of the takeover, but few can deny there has been progress. Last month, Rouhanifard announced he'd be stepping down at the end of the year. But why? Cherri asks Rouhanidard about his legacy and motivation for leaving. Finally, Jose Benitez, executive director of Prevention Point, discusses the change of tide in support when it comes to using harm reduction to deal with addiction.
