A great mother's days gift is to reassure the mom in your life that she will be financially ok as she gets older. That when the time comes to consider a senior living community, assisted living or nursing home everything will be taken care of without worry.Taking on the responsibility as a caregiver to my parents is honestly something that terrifies me. I know I am not alone.  We all want to care for our parents as well as they cared for us. That is why this week we are dedicating time to weed through the horror stories we've all heard.  Why are some seniors "kicked out" of their care facility? Why is it a struggle for seniors to get Medicare/Medicaid to help pay for the cost? Why are seniors who have worked so hard their entire lives left with nothing and unable to pay for the care they need?Eder Law Attorney at Harris Beach Lisa Powers is here to walk us through the important things that we need to know. Also joining the conversation are listeners Lori Viola and Lloyd Ruffle who have both been through it.  They share their stories and personal experience. Teaching us the valuable lessons they learned through the process. We hope this episode gives you some clarity and peace of mind. Our plan is to have Lisa come back in once a month to answers all your questions. So, if you do need some guidance feel free to email me  Click here to reach out to Lisa directlySee omnystudio.com/policies/listener for privacy information.

How uncomfortable do you feel when someone starts casually talking about money with you?A lot of women would rather talk about anything else but money. They would rather talk about their weight, their relationship, sex, even politics before they talk about their personal finance.Let’s push ourselves out of our comfort zone and start the conversation because it’s good to talk about money. Especially with other women, fellow moms. We can learn a lot from each other. Our guest today, is a big believer in this. Financial editor for NBC's Today Show, Founder and CEO of HerMoney media, author of several books including the one that just hit the shelves Women with Money: The Judgment-Free Guide to Creating the Joyful, Less Stressed, Purposeful (and Yes Rich) Life You DeserveJean Chatsky joins the conversation. We of course chat a lot about her book, and why it’s one of the most personal books she has written. Jean expresses the importance of understanding your money story, she gives us advice about dealing with the money guilt many of us can relate to and how to ask for the pay we deserve. This is such a great conversation, we hope you enjoy it as much as we did.Cheers to being financially confident women!See omnystudio.com/policies/listener for privacy information.

Retired Bankruptcy Court Judge and founder of Credit Abuse Resistance Education (CARE)  John Ninfo joins the conversation this week.As a bankruptcy judge who sat on the bench for two decades you can imagine the stories he has to tell.  One of the biggest takeaways from his long career is it’s not how much money you have, it’s how you manage it.  He saw countless people who had plenty of money but allowed debt to get the best of them and ultimately ruin their lives. The credit industry is set up to encourage you to fail. That’s why it is so important to be aware of what’s going on with your finances. “It’s not about your academic IQ, it’s about your Financial IQ and the two are not the same”After retirement, Judge Ninfo created CARE a program designed to help encourage financial education specifically for the younger generation. As a parent, like many of you, I am always looking for opportunities to teach my kids valuable money lessons.  Sitting down listening to this podcast episode together might be one of those opportunities.See omnystudio.com/policies/listener for privacy information.

91. Helping You Put Together A Financial Plan
It's the first Friday of the month, time for another financial goal that will help us achieve Financial WellnessLast month, our task was to find 20min a week to dedicate to bettering our financial future.  If you haven't yet set a day out of the week, take a moment to do it now.  A day you can and will commit 20min to your finances. Put it on your calendar, set yourself a reminder. This month CFP VP at Morgan Stanley, Erica Cummings gives us weekly "to dos"Week 1- Get your documents together. Any and all documents.  Put them in one binder, one area of the house.  This will help you understand what you have and notice what documents you're missing. After doing this you'll already feel better about your finances.Week 2- BudgetBe real with yourself.  Find out exactly what you are bringing in and what you are spending each month.  Break it down into categories.  This will allow you to get a better picture of where you're unnecessarily overspending.  A budget will also allow you to see where you can pull money from just in case an emergency comes up.Week 3- DebtThis might hurt to add up all your debt, BUT rip off the band aid and just do it.  Have a real honest understanding of who you owe and how much.Week 4- Emergency FundNow that you have all the numbers together, you have a good grasp of your financial picture. Now see where you can pull money to start building up 3-6months of monthly expenses. Don't worry it won't happen in one month, but at least you are consciously making an effort.  Every dollar towards your emergency fund helps! You got this!
