Beauty School no 19: How To Prep Yo Skin
Hey friends,We’re going to basics today and going over the first step of your skincare routine, prepare. We’ve spoken previously about the three major categories of a skincare routine: Prep (cleanse, tone, exfoliate), Correct (whatever you want to actually correct your skin, your masks, serums, vitamins A + C, other exfoliants), and Protect (moisturizer and SPF).Today we’re going over step 1, Prep because some hoe lied to you and told y’all that your cleanser doesn’t matter, or that they’re all the same. Lies, my dudes! And I’m sure you’re wondering what the F a toner is or what it does. Don’t forget to send us YOUR beauty, hair, skincare, makeup, or life, questions, your Milk?! With Your Dinner?! Hey friendsWe’re really excited to share this week’s episode with you! We are discussing a topic that might not be for everyone, however, if it is for you, you are going to be pumped for the next 1.5 hours. Today we are speaking with our friend Vanessa Bartlett, who is a psychic, medium, tarot reader, & an astrology and occult enthusiast. Yall, Vanessa is the real deal. She takes us on her journey of discovering her gifts at a young age, how she had to heal herself to accept and use her gifts to help others, and how she then learned to navigate a completely unknown field of study with absolutely no one able to guide her but herself. Just a heads up, Vanessa is frank with her moments of developing her gifts and speaks about a time that a demon entered her space. Not sure if that should be a trigger warning or a taste of what’s to come, but you guys, we think this episode is amazing! It’s so amazing that before we knew it, we had spoken for 2 hours and had to edit out some incredible tidbits to save for a bonus episode in the future--so be sure to watch out for that bonus episode!I’m not going to lie, as two Millenials trying to find our space within spirituality, this was a really, really dope and interesting conversation. To learn more about Vanessa, check out her Instagram @theaquarean, and be sure to check out her weekly readings on her YouTube Channel The Aquarean. Don’t forget to send us YOUR beauty, hair, skincare, makeup, or life, questions, your Milk?! How to Be Powerful in The Beauty Community: Ste...
Hey dudes! I can't say enough about this week's conversation with the incredible, Emmy winning makeup artist, the founder of Oracle Jayne Station, and the host of "Masters of Makeup", Andrew Sotomayor.Andrew won his first Emmy for Saturday Night Live in 2017, was nominated for an Emmy for Jesus Christ Superstar Live in 2018, and nominated again for Ryan Murphy's "Pose" in 2019. He is the makeup department head for The Other Two on HBO Max, and John Mulaney and the Sack Lunch Bunch on Netflix. He's the makeup and tattoo designer for "West Side Story" on Broadway, has worked 22 seasons of New York Fashion Week, and made up dozens of celebrities including Grammy-winning singers, three daughters of two US presidents, one presidential candidate, one knight, one dame, some of the most powerful female executives in business, and eight Academy Award-winning actors.WHEW! We haven't even gotten to how incredibly profound and thoughtful he is, or how dedicated to community-building within the LGBTQ+ and historically marginalized communities, the people who make up many of us working in the beauty industry.I absolutely adored this conversation, because it is the exact kind of open dialog that we were hoping to have and be able to share with our listeners when Alix and I first launched the pod.To learn more about Andrew, check out his Instagram @andrewsotomayororaclejaynestationoraclejaynestationSend us your letters and questions truebeautybrooklynpodcast@gmail.com or @ or .comand check out @truebeautybrooklynpodcast check out twitter @truebeautyBKpod If you live locally, make an appointment and come check us out at www.truebeautybrooklyn.com. How A Small Business Can Impact a Neighborhood ...
Hey guys! With the Pandemic still in full swing, and small businesses all across the country struggling to stay afloat, we wanted to spotlight how important Main Street, Mom and Pop small businesses are to our communities. If you have lived in Brooklyn for more than 6 months, you no doubt have heard of the store, Beacon’s Closet--the landmark for Brooklyn “cool-kid” thrifting consigning, and vintage shopping. While it wasn’t one of the first stores ever to open in  Williamsburg (after all, neighborhoods existed before we all moved over the bridge) back in the 90s when the neighborhood was still largely industrial and people from Manhattan asked, ‘who goes to Brookyln??’ , Beacon’s was certainly one of the first of the new wave of young artists and stores arriving to change the landscape into the Williamsburg that we know today.   They are consistently listed as one of the top 10 stores in NYC and have received much love from local, and international press, including features in Vanity Fair, Time Out NY, Gothamist, Racked, Paper Magazine, Lucky, The Village Voice, New York Times, Italian Vogue, French Vogue, New York Magazine, and The Wall Street Journal. We talk to one of the owners, Cindy Wheeler about growing up in a cult, rejecting the government and religion, finding music, moving to New York, and what it means to help shape a neighborhood and a generation of community members. Dudes! This was a great episode and we know you're going to love it!To learn more about Beacon’s Closet visit beaconscloset.com/ or check out their Instagram @beaconscloset Check out our Instagram @truebeautybrooklyn or @truebeautybrooklynpodcast.Visit us at www.truebeautybrooklynpodcast.com to learn more about us, and all of our incredible guests! If you live locally, make an appointment and come check us out at www.truebeautybrooklyn.com. Don’t forget to send us your questions and segment letters to truebeautybrooklynpodcast@gmail.com and we’ll see you back here next week. How to Leap Off Of A Glass Cliff to Found, And ...
Hi Friends! Today we are speaking with Hannah Donovan, formally the CEO and co-founder of  TRASH app. TRASH app is a machine learning-based video editing toolkit, where users can quickly create and edit high-quality, short-form video, and the company was just acquired by VSCO! Considering the world's biggest tech companies are currently under fire from, well, everyone, we wanted to bring onto the show our incredibly smart, innovative, and brilliant friend. Full disclosure, Trash App was acquired the week we recorded this show, so it was a really cool and fun surprise to hear about it while recording!  Another reason that we were so excited to speak with Han is because of the following set of data that we keep seeing over and over again: less than 3% of all venture capital goes to female founders, and of those companies, only 26% become acquired within 10 years. Our girl Han did both in 3! Hannah is clearly a visionary and has so much grit and determination. How To Find Yourself By Building Community, and...
Today we’re speaking with an incredible woman, humanitarian, and Acupuncturist Jacqueline Arellano. She is a badass who Alix met via a beauty forum a few years ago, and we have been dying to speak with her this season!Jacqueline is a lifelong humanitarian who grew up in California within communities that border Mexico. As the child of Mexican immigrants, Jacqueline was raised with these communities being an extension of her own, always looking to help Americans who endure the dangerous and long journey through the desert, escaping the horrors and unlivable conditions from which they fled in the hopes of having a chance at life.  (As an aside, I have many Latinx friends who constantly remind me that the United States is not the only country on the American Continent and that technically, we are all American. Amen!)Today Jacqueline donates her Acupuncture services to the non-profit Border Kindness, whose mission is to provide asylum-seekers, migrants, refugees, and the displaced with comprehensive services that include food, shelter, clothing, medical care, and legal services. She also leaves food, water, and supplies in the desert for people still in the middle of their journey. This interview was incredibly eye-opening for both Alix and I, and we think it will be for you too! You can donate to Border Kindness using:Paypal (please specify Border Kindness)Venmo to @Border-KindnessZelle to info@borderkindness.orgCash App to $borderkindnessGoFundMeClick this link to purchase Christmas gifts from the Border Kindness Holiday Shopping List, and donate a toy to a vulnerable child on the borderCheck out Jacqueline and give her some love on Instagram via @borderkindness or her personal page @agua.agujas .Check out our Instagram @truebeautybrooklyn or @truebeautybrooklynpodcast.Visit us at www.truebeautybrooklynpodcast.com to learn more about us, and all of our incredible guests! If you live locally, make an appointment and come check us out at www.truebeautybrooklyn.com. Don’t forget to send us your questions and segment letters to truebeautybrooklynpodcast@gmail.com and we’ll see you back here next week. We wanted to speak about a topic that too many of us know so much about--our relationship to food and our bodies in a way that’s fun, and interesting, and encouraging. Alissa is the founder of  Rumsey Nutrition and Wellness, a weight-inclusive nutrition practice that offers virtual counseling and online programs to help people liberate themselves from dieting, cultivate a peaceful relationship to food and their bodies, and live a more authentic, connected life. To learn more about Alissa, visit her website www.alissarumsey.com, or check out her Instagram @AlissaRumseyRD.  Be sure to pre-order her book Unapologetic Eating, available in February 2021!Check out our Instagram @truebeautybrooklyn or @truebeautybrooklynpodcast.Visit us at www.truebeautybrooklynpodcast.com to learn more about us, and all of our incredible guests! If you live locally, make an appointment and come check us out at www.truebeautybrooklyn.com. Don’t forget to send us your questions and segment letters to truebeautybrooklynpodcast@gmail.com and we’ll see you back here next week.
