No. 246 - Sold! (The KKUPFL Auction Incident, 2...
On this episode of the Keeping Karlsson Fantasy Hockey Podcast, you'll hear the live recording, play-by-play and colour commentary of the Keeping Karlsson Ultimate Patron Fantasy League Championship Tier's Auction Draft!
The draft features 14 owners, drafting from 5 different countries on 3 different continents, building their teams to compete for ultimate glory in the most prestigious fantasy hockey league on the planet.
Brian is your host for the entire four-hour journey while Elan drafts, but he's got plenty of great company and analysis from a litany of guests and co-hosts along the way:
Michael Clifford ( http://www.twitter.com/slimcliffy ) , Associate Editor for Dobber Hockey, is there before the first gavel drops to help set the table and then drop judgments on the opening set of bids.
Lewis Ezekiel ( https://www.twitter.com/avgtimeonice ) , of Average Time on Ice ( https://averagetimeonice.wordpress.com/ ) and a pre-season limerick series ( https://twitter.com/avgtimeonice/status/1178027979466842113 ) , comes on next to give his perspective on the draft so far as a previous Tier 1 competitor.
Meghan Hall ( https://www.twitter.com/meghanmhall ) , hockey-graphs.com contributor, comes in at 1:14:20 to give her takes on the auction action, and also shares her work on PK scoring trends, goalie pulls, and PPs that need fixing.
And Cat Silverman ( https://www.twitter.com/catmsilverman ) , writer for The Athletic and InGoal Magazine, helps close out the show beginning at 3:16:35 with her thoughts on how some of the more confounding goalie timeshare situations around the league might play out-- and a very appropriate amount of Eddie Lack appreciation, too.
Brian is also joined occasionally by Elan and the rest of the Tier 1 auction drafters, as well as Victor Nuno ( https://www.twitter.com/victornuno12 ) and Interns Alex and Ryan. Shout-outs also go out to the children of guests who made themselves known and heard in various living rooms across the continent.
Please bear in mind that this show was recorded live!, and features all the wonderful snafus and blips you'd expected from an unedited 4 hour broadcast :)
Take a look at the auction draft results:

No. 244 - Marincin Repeat
The Keeping Karlsson Fantasy Hockey Podcast is pleased to announce that it's officially draft szn, everybody! And that means it's time for Elan and Brian to comb through the entire Yahoo! default draft rankings-- from #1 Connor McDavid to #1009 Kalle Kossila-- and then ruthlessly attack them for the most egregious examples of over- and under-rated players found within. Follow along as we name more players in an episode than we're likely to on any regular season episode.
(In an episode where we ranked hockey names, by the way, Kalle Kossila could easily crack the top 100.)
(In an episode where we possessed Grays Sports Almanac, by the way, we'd use our knowledge only for good.)
Players discussed on this episode include Ben Bishop, Thomas Chabot, Cale Makar, Tukka Rask, Devan Dubnyk, Alex Ovechkin, Johnny Gaudreau, Jack Eichel, Patrik Laine, Max Pacioretty, Jamie Benn, Dylan Larkin, Tyson Barrie, Jacob Trouba, Jonathan Toews, Vincent Trocheck, Oscar Klefbom, Roope Hintz, Anthony Mantha, Shayne Gostisbehere, Alex Edler, Quinn Hughes, Erik Karlsson, Brent Burns, Tuukka Rask, P.K. Subban, Nicklas Backstrom, Josh Morrissey, Zach Parise, Ryan Pulock, Ryan Getzlaf, Tyler Bertuzzi, Anthony Mantha, Andreas Athanasiou, Filip Hronek, Mike Green, Patric Hornqvist, Sam Reinhart, Martin Marincin, Kevin Labanc, Ondrej Kase, Pavel Buchnevich, Nikita Gusev, Kaapo, Kakko, Jake Gardiner, Elvis Merzlikins, Joonas Korpisalo, Jaro Halak, Michal Neuvirth, Michael Hutchinson, Linus Ullmark, Tomas Tatar, Ilya Kovalchuk, Anders Lee, Brock Nelson, Anthony DeAngelo, Bryan Rust, Dominik Kahun, Jesper Bratt, Drake Batherson, Victor Olofsson and a whole bunch more.

No. 243 - Ice Cream Social
Omg! It's DomL guesting on this brand new episode of the Keeping Karlsson Fantasy Hockey Podcast.
Some people make player scoring projections, and some people make algorithms that make player scoring projections. Both those kinds of people feature on this episode, as Elan, Brian and Dom build their All Disagreement Teams, featuring the forwards, defensemen and goalies for whom their projections differed the most. All three hash out their projection strategies and resulting predictions to try and understand how they ended up as far apart as they did, and to see if maybe, just maybe, people and algorithms can coexist as one peaceful entity. Until the algorithms become sentient and begin producing their own projections. And their projections are just about the success of other algorithms' projections. And hockey players are replaced by sentient spreadsheets with cute clipart skates in the background.
Go check out Dom's projections ( http://www.fantasyhockeyprojections.ca ) , and then also follow him on twitter ( https://twitter.com/domluszczyszyn?lang=en ) and read his fantasy rankings and team previews at The Athletic ( https://theathletic.com/author/dom-luszczyszyn/ ).

It's Smörgoåliesbord!! 2019!! Jaaaa!! (or 'Joooo!!' for the Finns).
As per ancient Keeping Karlsson tradition, Elan and Brian take a deep pre-pre-season look at the NHL's goalie landscape and get fantasy draft ready by tiering the tendies according to their statistical track records, anticipated workloads and win totals, prospect pedigrees, challengers breathing down their necks, and whatever other data points they can sink their teeth into.
Players discussed on this episode include All The Goalies! Like, 70 of them!

No. 239 - Making a Fantasy League Madness
So here's what he did: we opened the floor to suggestions for how to make the Keeping Karlsson Ultimate Patron Fantasy League ( keepingkarlsson.com/league ) (KKUPFL) even better with one rule change. With the help of friends Jon and Dave, Elan and Brian debate the pros and cons of 32 different fantasy league rule candidates, from the subtle and obvious to the radical and novel. One by one, 31 rule change suggestions fall away, and nearly three hours later, a victor emerges...

No. 231 - Couture Club
Hello, hello, hello! It's another spring series edition of the Keeping Karlsson Fantasy Hockey Podcast!
In this show's first half, Elan and Brian are inspired by the happenings of the Stanley Cup Playoffs' second round to discuss the rich irony of the Hurricanes goaltending, the pumpkin-ing of the Islanders goaltending, and the futures of a couple forwards on each team who had standout seasons for reasons both good and bad. They also try to nip any speculation on the St. Louis Blues' PP1 quarterback in the bud, give appropriate praise to one established and one up-and-coming Star, speculate on the potential of a repeat situation in the Bruins' crease next year, and wonder whether a Predators stud is actually that.
In the second half, we kick off our Almanac review and self-evaluation, where we look back at our projections to celebrate the hits and understand and learn from the misses. To begin, we go easy on ourselves, looking at the player point projections on which we were furthest apart from other projectors, but ended up being right about. Don't worry... we'll hold ourselves fully accountable for the ones we got wrong in the offseason episodes to come.
This episode was prepared with great help from @fantasyref, who sent us all their data on how we did on our projections, as well as how our projections stacked up to all the others. Check out their site and this year's rankings!
And finally.. we announced on this episode that the Keeping Karlsson Audio Almanac will be returning for the 2019-20 season! You can pre-order yours at keepingkarlsson.com/almanac. (If you didn't listen to the 2018-19 Almanac and want to check it out, it's now available on a pay-what-you-want basis.)

They have a look at both sides of the upsets to see which players might be most responsible, and which teams may have deserved better fates.
Then, Jade and Lewis of @avgtimeonice don their best red carpet attire to present the Keeping Karlsson Ultimate Patron Fantasy League Year End Awards, aka the KKUPYs, to recognize the biggest splashes and crashes that happened in the KKUPFL this year.
The episode wraps with our belated tributes to those who won and lost in the final weeks of the 2018-19 Fantasy Hockey Season.

No. 229 - Hurdy Gurdy Mantha
It's all over but the crying-- tears of championship joy, we hope, as we tie a bow on the 2018-19 Fantasy Hockey season in this new episode of the Keeping Karlsson Hockey podcast!
We recount the MVPs and L(east)VPs of your fantasy playoff matchups, and search within the last two weeks for signs of things to come next year. We also try to divine a lesson or two that we can learn about managing our teams through the season and into the playoffs to help us get even better for next year.
Then, it's time for some classic experimental KK action, where Elan and Brian share their thoughts and predictions on the 2019 Stanley Cup Playoffs the only way they know how: a live fantasy draft of their teams for the annual Keeping Karlsson Playoff Patron Box Pool (KKPPBP). They also drop tidbits of fantasy playoff philosophy along the way. Listen and feel the thrill as they recite the names of the players in each box, and then offer their semi-coherent reasoning for liking one more than the rest. Even better, join the pool yourself by becoming a patron (at any level! even $1) of Keeping Karlsson for the duration of the playoffs.
And, fear not: Elan and Brian will still be bringing you brand new episodes of Keeping Karlsson all through the playoffs and summer, as they always do! Stick with us for all the hindsight, foresight, and continued analysis of the latest NHL news and notes that'll help you get set to win your pool (again??) next year. Episodes will be released bi-weekly, which means you can expect the next one to land on your device on April 22.
Players discussed on this episode include Anthony Mantha, Tyler Bertuzzi, Dylan Larkin, Andreas Athanasiou, Filip Hronek, Taro Hirose, Filip Zadina, Oliver Bjorkstrand, David Savard, Josh Anderson, Zach Werenski, Leon Draisaitl, David Pastrnak, Alex Radulov, Tyler Seguin, Jamie Benn, Mikhail Sergachev, Dougie Hamilton, Sergey Bobrovsky, Darcy Kuemper, Jack Campbell, Alex Georgiev, Philipp Grubauer, Patrik Laine, Elias Lindholm, Elias Pettersson, Brock Boeser, Ryan Suter, Shayne Gostisbehere and more.

They also play a game of "Can I Drop Him?", where they bring up a bunch of names who've potentially been rostered all year but who might have little chance of contributing over the season's last six days.
