Black History Month: Interview with THE Amira R...
This week, to send off Black History Month in style, we are re-releasing an interview each day highlighting a Black person we’ve had on Burn It All Down in the past whose words and actions still resonate with us all.
Waaaaaaay back in Sept 2017, before she became a permanent fixture on BIAD, Dr. Amira Rose Davis, Professor of History and African American Studies at Penn State, was interviewed by Brenda and Shireen. This interview was during an episode focused on the intense sexist and racist response to Jemele Hill calling Trump a white supremacist, including Trump calling for ESPN to fire Hill. They talk about black women in sports media, the old boys club of sports journalism and sporting spaces, and the history of African-American sporting press.
Dr. Davis: "And I think that that’s compounded by the fact that she is a black woman because then you get exactly this misogynoir read onto that where it’s not just that they’re saying, “Get out of the kitchen. Get off the SportsCenter and go back to the kitchen.” But they’re also saying, “Go back to Africa.”"

This week, to send off Black History Month in style, we will be re-releasing an interview each day highlighting a Black person we’ve had on Burn It All Down in the past whose words and actions still resonate with us all.
Back in April 2018, Shireen interviewed road cyclist Ayesha McGowan. At the time, McGowan was working toward becoming the first female African American pro cyclist in the US. They talk about that journey, about how activism and involvement in community engagement turned into racing, and about what we can all do to support diversity in road cycling. I’m pleased to say today — and you might have caught this during a Bad Ass Woman of the Week segment earlier this year — McGowan signed a contract in January with Liv Cycling making her a professional road cyclist.
If you’d like to hear more interviews with Black athletes, check out our Guests list on our website: www.burnitalldownpod.com. We’ve talked to a bunch of hoopers including Bilqis Adbul-Qaadir, Essence Carson, Layshia Clarendon, Shakyla Hill, Kelsey Bone, Monique Billings; footballers Eni Aluko and Nicole McClure; legendary Olympic sprinter Wyomia Tyus; softball superstar AJ Andrews and baseball’s Malaika Underwood; hammer thrower Gwen Berry; speed skater Erin Jackson; and volleyball player Simone Lee. This week, Amira, Brenda, and Jessica are very confused about the creepy Raven AR [6:06] before they dive in to WADA's Russia Ban [18:10]. Then Brenda chats with Nemesia Hijos, a feminist leader in Argentine futbol, about major changes in the politics of Boca Juniors, one of the world’s most storied clubs [37:32]. Later the group considers the "Year of the Black QB" [52:48].
Of course, you’ll hear the Burn Pile, [1:04:47] the Bad Ass Woman of the Week segment, [1:07:32] and what is good in our worlds.
